John Starks Mini-Interview
By InsideHoops.com
Former New York Knicks guard John Starks was and still is a Madison Square Garden favorite. InsideHoops met with him after a Knicks-Nets game and caught up on things.
InsideHoops.com: John, what have you been up to in the last year?
John Starks: Just been kind of busy, took a head coaching job with the Westchester Wildfire up in White Plains, New York...
InsideHoops.com: What league is that?
John Starks: USBL. I'm looking forward to getting started in that part of my career now.
InsideHoops.com: Cool, and how did that come about, did you know you wanted to get into coaching a while back?
John Starks: Yeah. As the years got closer and closer and winding down, as far
as my career, you kind of assess your life and see what you want to do afterwards.
Guys have always told me that one day I'll make a great coach, so it kind of stuck
with me, it's something that I enjoy, watching players grow and having a hand
in helping them achieve some of the things that they want to achieve in their
life.
InsideHoops.com: And do you have a firm grip on the X's and O's as far as actually teaching it goes?
John Starks: Oh yeah, yeah pretty much. I got guys like Jeff Van Gundy, Herb Williams and Patrick (Ewing) to kind of rely on. They're giving me a lot of advice on some things, which should help.
InsideHoops.com: And how does it feel to come back to Madison Square Garden, see the reply of your dunk - the dunk of all dunks - on the big screen and have the fans go nuts?
John Starks: It feels great. It's great seeing that they show something like that and that the fans still respect me as a player, respect that play. I think it was a great moment in Knicks history, as well as the NBA, so, it was a great moment.
