Sounds like you need to do some research. It is fairly common in the Illinois legislature to vote present for various reasons.

I see alot of black folks who work hard just like everyone else.... They dont usually draw attention to themselves like the loud minority, but they are there and it makes me angry that they pick up a bum rap by people who arent able to see them or simply refuse to.....

I see hard working women and I see alot of kids everyday who do their mothers proud by their conduct in public....

Of course, like I said, they dont get any attention but they are there if you look...

when on the El, there will be maybe 2 kids acting out..... but if you are paying attention there are 10 other kids on the same train not acting out ......

They never gave us a sense of entitlement, they actually told us "you got to not be as good but better to get recognition." I have been around talented black students from the top universities in the country. Its just not enough people and its generally the consensu when we have these conversations. The youth is not getting much better in terms of achievement and many issues still arent being addressed. After a while you have to stop blaming it on society and blame it on people making "idiotic decisions"

Its not drama...its a sad reality. Young black women are getting aids at an alarming rate. Two parent households are way to scare in the black community. Black still perform horribly worse on standardized exams which is just unacceptable. Then there is the materialistic mentality that runs through hip hop that many listen to and the notions that being smart is not black. There are hard working black people out there but there arent enough.

Time to start looking in the mirror for some of the issues that effect us. I could see if drastic improvements are bring made but I havent seen much.

first let us understand that social status and wealth is like a pyramid. and frequently (altho not always) class and sophistication correspond to wealth.

now the largest part of a pyramid is always at the bottom. and likewise the majority of people who make up the social pyramid are at the bottom. its only logical. if you think back to the slave days, you had one wealthy owner who had numerous poor slaves. you didnt have multiple wealthy owners splitting the services of a single slave. its just math. there are fewer people at the top of the hill. this holds true for any race. the majority of white people in this country are hee-haws, we just dont see them on a regular basis because they're out in a trailer in kansas. they're out of sight and out of mind. but believe me, their numbers are there.

so now lets turn back to black people. we've already established that for any race, the largest group is going to be the most unsavory. now in the black community, this is magnified wildly. FACT: one out of TEN black males are in jail. 1 in 10!!!!! FACT: studies have shown that blacks are the ONLY race in America whose children are actually predicted to be WORSE off then the generation before them. FACT: blacks are the most urban-concentrated group in America. think about when you go into the city and what kind of black people you see walking down the sidewalk. are most of them in shirts and ties? some are, but those ones are usually walking pretty quickly.

so anyways, the point is that just because posters here might live in a community where you predominantly see blacks who reflect a certain standard, does NOT mean that is by and large the case in America. i would venture a guess that most posters here live in communities that are rarer in this country than they understand. remember the pyramid.

If Black people wanna fix their crime rates and their education rates, its going to take a combination of things to get it done.

first off its going to take better schools with books and heat and dedicated teachers to help get off the ground..... If the schools were run properly (and I work in the Philadelphia district so I know how poorly school districts run themselves) it would be easier to graduate more kids.... Secondly we need to WORK TOGETHER to bring jobs that pay a livable wage all americans who are at or below the poverty line... Americans used to be able to maintain themselves and their families one the male working and bringing home a check... Now 2 parents working isnt even enough... Does that mean anything to You? Do you realize that this a real problem? not black issue or a white issue?

Do you understand how poverty and economic conditions contribute to these problems much more than race?

you dont just "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" with no resources and no hope and no help... it isnt realistic...

I personally never believed in that crap... I grew up in West philly and I dont know any people who think its cool to be dumb....

I know plenty of people who will mock you if show white mannerisms and/or phony mannerisms and I know people who mock you if you deviate from the way they are used to dealing with people.... But stupidity is not a valuable commodity in the black community...

I was smart and I never got mocked for it.... to the contrary, friends I had told me to do what I do and dont test these streets like they did... I listened to them and it saved my life......

Like I said earlier, they do alot of that in black churches and urban leagues and there are even networks for black college kids as well other services... but it isnt enough all by ourselves, we are a part of the world and we need to interact with it and our neighbors to solve these problems that affect us all... AIDS and economics and Sexually transmitted disease and crumbling of the nuclear family are all issue which all americans face in some form.

it makes sense to me that we band together to conquer these situations instead of beating each other over the head with the stigma of the problems
