Let's start this discussion again, now that it's official.

The Oklahoma City Thunder.

Think about the name for a bit. Stare at it on the screen. Say it aloud a bunch of times. Let it sink in.

And now, what do you think of it and why?

This name is an epic fail...No matter how many times I say it out loud, I think WNBA basketball.

Thunder at least has some manlyness to it....

Well they add themselves to the annual quiz of: name the teams that don't end in a "s." As for the name, it was leaked for several months now and I am not too fond of it, but it's not bad either...

I thought WNBA too for some odd reason.
I dunno Sparks, Shock, Thunder all seems to fall in line.

I think thought Yobore hit the nail on the head. It won't matter over time and will seem natural.

Really sucks, when you consider what could have been...

Oklahoma City Outlaws
Oklahoma City Bandits
Oklahoma Oilers
Oklahoma City Greed

But compared to Wind, Energy, Rain, Sun, Sleet, and Hail... it's a good name.

there is too close of a connotation with oil "robber barons" of yesteryear-- plus the fact they essentially stole the sonics from us

Should've been Barons.

I don't like the name. It's too generic. Reminds me of a junior high school team rather than a professional sports franchise. Just my thoughts.

should be Outlaws or Bandits with a basketball wearing a hat and bandana

I can hear it already:

Thunder, thunder, thunder, thunder
I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
I looked round
And I knew there was no turning back
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
Sound of the drums
Beating in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You've been
Thunderstruck

Rode down the highway
Broke the limit, we hit the ton
Went through to Texas, yeah Texas, and we had some fun
We met some girls
Some dancers who gave a good time
Broke all the rules
Played all the fools
Yeah yeah they, they, they blew our minds
And I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please
Yeah them ladies were too kind
You've been
Thunderstruck

I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please

Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
It's alright, we're doin' fine
It's alright, we're doin' fine, fine, fine
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, baby, baby
Thunderstruck, you've been Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
You've been Thunderstruck

One of my favorite ACDC songs

I actually agree with this...

The problem is not really the sound of the word "thunder," but how you can use the word in a logo. It sure as hell is not as logo friendly as Timberwolves.

Here is the Knicks (Knickerbockers) logo evolution. The dribbling Knickerbocker was a bit corny, but might have seemed suitable at the time. However, they eventually decided to completely get rid of the historical figure logo, and even change the name- Knickerbockers to Knicks- of the team.

This is a line drawing of their original logo (I think the colors were similar to what they use today.)- which was used from 1946-1964:
http://www.geocities.com/nytweety.geo/ny17.gif

This was the one used for about 30 years- 1964-1992 (the logo I first saw when rooting for the Knicks in the 60's):http://www.geocities.com/nytweety.geo/ny21.gif

And this is the one most of you know:
http://www.geocities.com/nytweety.geo/ny20.gif

So the Knicks franchise shortened their name, dumped the guy, featured (enlarged) the basketball, and then came up with a more "modern" look beginning in the 1990's.

I suppose that the Thunder can do something like this over time but you have to wonder why they did not come up with a more "user friendly" name than "Thunder," and why their original logo showed so little creativity.

Horrible name.

Thunder - A loud noise that does nothing.

Sounds like a WNBA or Minor League Baseball team.

Myth

One reason Thunder sounds dumb is because of how awkward it is when people refer to the teammates in a plural sense.

Heck, even NBA.com says "Thunder are ready to roar in OKC."

jbot

sounds like a made up team name from a movie or something, maybe even a minor league team name. ranks right up the stink-o meter w/ "bobcats".

what about other singular names in nba: heat , magic, jazz.

this name reminds me of the wnba

for reals

They're named after a sound. C'mon!!! At least jazz music has different styles - and when the team was originally given the name, it had something to do with the city.

Thunder could not be anymore generic, universal, or unspecific to Oklahoma City.

I completely agree with the WNBA comment. That is precisely what popped into my head when I heard the name and saw the logo.

Thunder is a poor choice of name. What they should of instead of just using thunder, they should have added to it

Thunderstorm(although too similar to Seattle Storm)
Thunderbirds(That would have been decent. The logo could have consisted of a jet, a bird, or the Ford Thunderbird logo... I'm also bias towards Ford Thunderbirds)
Thunderbursts

IMO, thunder is a cool sounding word, but by itself, it sounds very corny when it comes to a nick name or team name.

Some of the mock up Jersey's done by people on the net, look better then the real one. Like the Cyclones one. It looked better, and sound better then thunder. It looks like out dated already.
