Let me say something that will be unpopular: Lincoln was not a good president, he was a good wartime leader. He was incompetant in major areas: he lacked economical insight, pushed America towards more of tyranny. He was a horrendous negotiatior, he could have held together the Union without causing the deadliest war in American history. There was little evidence he gave a f*ck about slavery at all, showing support for the Corwin Amendment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corwin_Amendment).

The reason he is held so high by ordinary Americans? Winners re-write history. Lincoln caused the civil war and brought upon the most death in American history because of his ineptness to negotiate. That's the truth, he just happened to be on the victor's side on the end.

Best ever? That's simply a joke.

I think you're focusing too much on the results of the policies. As president, you are not the only one who creates and sees these policies through. A president is more useful if he possesses overarching characteristics as a human being, perserverance, creativity, bravery, humbleness, these are some of the qualities that make great rulers and why some president's are more highly regarded than others.

One of the most controversial, yet influential leaders of the American Revolution was Alexander Hamilton. Despite criticism from other notable leaders of the era like Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, Hamilton put forth bold, new ideas that remain part of our political system today. Beginning as a lawyer in 1782, he became an influential figure in the interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. In 1786, he proposed a convention of the states by which he hoped to empower the federal government. Some of those picks in the 1st round were shocking, infact some of them were not even political leaders. Who ever placed Queen Elizabeth 1 in like the 5th round below Oliver Cromwell clearly has no idea about British history. And those who were going down the old Politcal theorist route with Karl Marx for example decide to leave out possibly the most influential writer of modern History. One who pratically wrote the ideas of Democracy and was a huge influence on American history let alone European.
