please, please, please:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaKrj...eature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaKrjiDRSOI&feature=related)

reasons for picking:
-that voice... not much needs to be said. it's powerful, soulful, passionate, and he can cover a wide range of styles.
-james knew when to just sit back and let the band rock. that was a huge reason why i chose him. wouldn't want to choose a singer who wants to steal the show all the time.

P.S. i was busy all day with school and other crap i didn't see this until just now, so sorry for the delay.

I'll just go ahead and make the easy pick. Jimi Hendrix.

Reason for the pick: Easily one of the top guitarists of all time that brings incredible stage presence. He can provide passable lead vocals if needed, or can just sit back and jam. This also gives me a lot of flexibility, with my next pick I can go with any number of different artists, most of whom would be thrilled to play alongside Jimi.

with my first pick in the all-time musical draft, i select miles davis as my lead horn player.

http://www.kalamu.com/bol/wp-content/content/images/miles%20davis%2046.jpg

reasons for selection:

* demonstrates an amazing musical versatility. seminal in the inception of many of the major movements in jazz in the 20th century. his style spans fusion jazz, bop, even rock and soul;

* has worked with many influential musicians (including thelonious monk, milt jackson, john coltrane, charles mingus, art blakey, cannonball adderly and herbie hancock) and expressed admiration for another one of my potential picks. therefore, it can be concluded that he is willing to experiment with unique musical lineups - which will stand him in good stead for the sorta lineup that i'm compiling - and anomalous sounds.

* he overcame adversity in his career, including a heroin addiction:

Quote:
Because of his problems with drugs, Davis had gained a reputation for unreliability. In the winter of 1953-1954 though, he returned to East St. Louis and his family. He locked himself in a guest room in his father's farm for twelve days until the drug was fully out of his system.

* the style, man! miles has a horn sound that is both distinctive and emotive. while not the most technically proficient horn player, you can hear the soul in each note he plays.

* can take a back seat and let other musicians jam; he has a great appreciation of musical space. can be used as a focal point, or in the background.

* does not deserve to fall outside the top 10.

David Gilmour

http://www.murodelrock.com/il_muro_del_rock/enciclopedia_rock/elenco_artisti/g/Gilmour%20David/david_gilmour-6685.jpg

David Gilmour is an English musician. He is lead guitarist, one of the main singers, and one of the main songwriters for Pink Floyd. Also has produced for other artists before (some of the most known would be Syd Barrett; former lead singer/songwriter for Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, The Who, Elton John and more).

Great singer and really good guitarist, although not known for hard solos (meaning that he usually plays very melodic solos). My main focus for my band is versatility, and this guy is the epitome of that word. Very humble, and great personality from what I know, so the band would fare well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W6hBI1SAL4 (incredible guitar solo)

And of course, one of the greatest songs known to human creation. (Note, he is sharing the singing with Roger Waters, who played bass guitar for Pink Floyd... you can tell them apart because David Gilmour has a higher range on his voice.

DUANE ALLMAN!
http://image.maniadb.com/images/album/153/153003_f_2.jpg
Biography: Howard Duane Allman (November 20, 1946 – October 29, 1971) was an American session musician and lead guitarist of the southern rock group, The Allman Brothers Band. Allman is best remembered for his brief but influential tenure in the band he helped co-found, as well as his slide guitar and improvisational skills. Alongside of his work with The Allman Brothers Band, Allman was an established session musician performing with many artists including: King Curtis, Aretha Franklin, Boz Scaggs, and Herbie Mann. He also had a major role on the 1970 album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos (the most recognized clapton lick of all time is actually Duane). In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Allman as number two on their list of the greatest guitarists of all time.[1]

Session Work:
In November 1968 Hall hired Allman to play on an album with Wilson Pickett. Allman's work on that album, Hey Jude (1968), got him hired as a full-time session musician at Muscle Shoals and brought him to the attention of a number of other musicians, such as guitar great Eric Clapton, who later said, "I remember hearing Wilson Pickett's 'Hey Jude' and just being astounded by the lead break at the end. ... I had to know who that was immediately — right now."

In 1971 Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Reasons for pick: breadth of musicianship, iconic slide sound, incredible improviser, comfortable with Coltrane-esque free jazz through delta blues

Sooo, for my lead guitarist, I choose one of the quickest shredders the world has ever seen. Combining lightning-quick fingers with an Italian Renaissance name the eleventh pick will be.... Michael Angelo Batio
I intend to be as fast, intense, and goosebump-making AS possible.

http://www.celebrityrockstarguitars.com/rock/angelo_files/mikequad.jpg

Equipped with a guitar fit for a goddess (Shiva), this man's fingers so fast that he could probably keep up with six to seven aliases in ISH! Simultaneously. Is Romo him?

Often referred to as the "Twista/Rebel XD of Instrumental Rock/Heavy Metal/Progressive Rock" Batio " is an American guitarist and columnist from Chicago, Illinois. Considered to be one of the fastest guitarists in the world, Batio was voted the "No. 1 Shredder of All Time" by Guitar One Magazine in 2003.[2][3] He was also listed as one of the "Top 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists of All Time" by Guitar World Magazine, whom he writes the column Time to Burn for, and one of the "20 Greatest Shredders of All Time" by Total Guitar Magazine, both in April 2008.[4]"

One of his stage gimmicks are to hold tightly to one of these:"[edit] The Double-Guitar
Batio was the inventor of the Double-Guitar, a V-shaped, twin-neck guitar which can be played both right- and left-handed.[13] The first version of this instrument was actually two separate guitars simply played together, as opposed to being one entity. A Flying V was fastened to a snare drum in a left-handed position, while another one was strapped around his shoulder. The next version of the guitar, as designed by Batio and guitar technician Kenny Breit, featured a flight case latch attached to the back of each guitar, which could reportedly be assembled in five seconds. In October 2003, Dean designed and built the "Mach 7 Jet", and on March 6, 2007, the newest version was delivered to Batio. The original Double went on display at the Chicago Hard Rock Cafe 'wall of fame' before it was relocated to a HRC in Egypt. Its whereabouts are currently unknown.

When the Double-Guitar was first used in concert, Batio noticed that the guitars created a lot of feedback when played together. He decided that he needed to invent a way to 'dampen' the strings when both guitars were played at the same time, hence the invention of the "MAB String Dampener", which is now available to buy from M.A.C.E. Music.[14]

The Double-Guitar was recently named as the 8th "coolest guitar in rock" by online music magazine Gigwise.[15]

[edit] The Quad Guitar
As well as the Double Guitar, Michael Angelo also invented and designed the Quad Guitar.[16] The guitar was originally built in conjunction with Gibson, and built by Wayne Charvel in California. The top two guitars have seven strings, while the bottom two have the regular six. The first Quad, as used in the video for Nitro's "Freight Train", was stolen in El Paso, Texas after the second show of Nitro's O.F.R. tour. When Batio was performing in November 2004, a young fan named Simon Jones and his father turned up with a guitar case which held inside the two top guitars of the Quad, as found by Mick Seymour. Dean designed and built a new Quad Guitar in 2007.

The Quad Guitar was recently named as the 2nd "coolest guitar in rock" by online music magazine Gigwise.[17]

I choose:

http://www.80smusiclyrics.com/artists/images/prince1_50.jpg

One of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. With each album he released, Prince has shown remarkable stylistic growth and musical diversity, constantly experimenting with different sounds, textures, and genres. Occasionally, his music can be maddeningly inconsistent because of this eclecticism, but his experiments frequently succeed; no other contemporary artist can blend so many diverse styles into a cohesive whole.

Prince will bring an extreme amount of versatility to my band, as he can do it all, including a helluva live performance. Primarily though, he will play lead guitar and sometimes - when we need that sexy falsetto - provide vocals. Of course, he will write songs as well.

Some prime Prince for ya:

I draft Todd Smith aka the invincible and time tested LL Cool J. Mr. Smith first came on to the scene as a battle rapper in the 1980's. Since then he has evolved into an artist that can make incredible songs about a wide range of topics such as women, girls, and sex. Mr. Smith can put on an amazing live show and has used his lyrics to slay challengers and stimulate groupies for over 3 decades. LL's abs are almost perfect, and they seem to get better and more defined with time. They look good whether he is performing live drenched in sweat, or if he is in front of a green backround shooting a video. He has never tested positive for PEDs and he is the only rapper to lick his lips in between every bar without stumbling on his words.

Stevie Wonder. Legendary singer-songwriter who plays multiple instruments and produces his own music. One of the most influential performers of all time who has impacted everyone from Michael Jackson to Kanye West. Incredible vocal range with the ability to sing a syllable over several notes. His music covers R&B, soul, funk, and pop. His versatility is seen in his numerous collaborations with everyone from Busta Rhymes to Rod Stewart.

One of the best pianists ever, Herbie Hancock started off in Miles Davis' second quintet as a 23-year-old, and developed into one of the most important and influential artists ever. He was a innovator of many genres, including Jazz, Rock, Electro and Funk. He also recorded soundtracks.

He successfully worked together with greats like Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Stevie Wonder, Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Joni Mitchell, Carlos Santana, Annie Lennox, Christina Aquilera, amongst others.

Most noted about his playing proficiency is his great rhythmic feel, paired with insane improvising skills. A true master of the piano, and music in general.

His best-known pieces are Chameleon, Watermelon Man and Cantalupe Island, which have been sampled and covered by countless other musicians.

Herbie Hancock recorded more than 50 albums as a bandleader, and dozens more as a sidekick. Last year, he won the Grammy "Album of the Year" for his for his work "River: The Jone Letters", adding to his 8 other Grammy awards. He also won an Academy Awards for "Best Original Soundtrack" in the movie "'Round Midnight".

Herbie Hancock is the ideal centerpiece of any band, as the piano can be used both as a melodic and a rhythmic instrument. Herbie also is one of the finest songwriters, and has shown the ability to work with any musician, no matter how big the ego.

JOHN COLTRANE

'Trane' was a saxophonist, composer and bandleader and one of the best to ever blow. In such a short time, he put out classic great material with his own bands and working with others (like the #8 pick.) He begin in the late '40s, but didn't take off until Miles hired him in '54. He worked with him until '56 after drugs took over he fired him. He worked as a session with many, very in demand before forming his out quartet ... The rest is history. He died young at age 40 of liver disease, most likely caused by his early drug usage just as Jazz fusion was about to take off ...

Leslie Edward "Les" Claypool (born September 29, 1963 in Richmond, California, U.S.) is a musician, best known for his work with the band Primus. Claypool's mastery of the electric bass has brought him into the spotlight with his funky, creative playing style. He is a multi-instrumentalist, novelist, music producer, actor, and film director.

# 25... the first pick of the second round, mind you...

heretik32 chooses the King: Lebron...

No, wait a minute, it's a music draft, right?

Ok, I'll take the King... Elvis Presley. RIP.

http://www.elviswiki.de/images/1/1d/ElvisStartseite.jpg

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935–August 16, 1977) was an American singer, musician and actor. A cultural icon, he is commonly referred to by his first name, and as the "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" or "The King".

Throughout his career, he set records for concert attendance, television ratings and recordings sales. He is one of the best-selling and most influential artists in the history of popular music. Health problems, drug dependency and other factors led to his premature death at age 42.

The King. What more can you say. Maybe one of the most recognisable voices today... and certainly of the most sexy performers of all time. That guy was raunchy back when it was illegal to be raunchy.

George Benson, born 1943, began his career as an exceptional Jazz guitarist, but later on came to fame as a Pop and R&B singer, where he showcased his Jazz education and is one of the best scat-singers of his era. He also is a great songwriter.

Thus far in his career, he's recorded 68 albums and won 10 Grammy awards. He's played together with greats ranging from Miles Davis in the 60's to Al Jerreau in 2006.

Iggy Pop...

"James Newell Osterberg, Jr. (born April 21, 1947), better known by his stage name Iggy Pop, is an American rock singer, songwriter, and occasional actor.[1] Although he has had only limited mainstream success, Iggy Pop is considered an innovator of punk rock, garage rock, and other related styles.[1] He is sometimes referred to by the nicknames "the Godfather of Punk" and "the Rock Iguana", and is widely acknowledged as one of the most dynamic stage performers.[1] Pop began calling himself Iggy after his first band in high school, The Iguanas.[2] His direct influence extends to the present day: a Cadillac ad in rotation since February 2007 features his vocal performance on the song "Punkrocker", recorded in 2006 with the Swedish band Teddybears.[3]
Iggy Pop was the lead singer of The Stooges, a late 1960s/early 1970s garage rock band who were influential in the development of the nascent heavy metal and punk rock genres. The Stooges became infamous for their live performances, during which it was not uncommon for Pop (who traditionally performs bare-chested) to consume narcotics, self-mutilate, verbally abuse the audience, expose himself and leap off the stage (thus being the first or among the first to "stage dive"). Countless subsequent performers have imitated Pop's antics.
Pop's popularity has ebbed and flowed throughout the course course of his subsequent solo career. His best-known solo songs include "Lust for Life", "I'm Bored", "Real Wild Child", the Top 40 hit "Candy" (with vocalist Kate Pierson of The B-52's)[2] and "The Passenger". A film about Iggy Pop's life and career titled The Passenger is currently in development."

Thom Yorke az my lead vocalist.

With a soft, unique style, and an insane depth to hiz lyricz, the Radiohead Phenomenom can envoke tearz among the manliest of men.
" d first gained notice with the worldwide hit single Creep, which was allegedly written in the men's toilets of Exeter University's student club.[5] The song appeared on the band's 1993 debut album Pablo Honey, which received mixed reviews. Yorke, coming to resent the way "Creep" had overshadowed their career, described the band's feeling toward it in the lyrics of My Iron Lung, which appeared on their second album, The Bends, in 1995. By this time the band, through frequent touring and greater attention to detail in the recording studio, had picked up a large cult fan base and had begun to receive wider critical acclaim. Radiohead charted their first top 5 single in the UK with Street Spirit (Fade Out) in late 1995.

Thelonius Monk

http://siroz.files.wordpress.com/2007/09/6158thelonious-monk-posters.jpg

Quote:
Widely considered one of the most important musicians in jazz, Monk had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "Epistrophy", "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Straight No Chaser" and "Well, You Needn't". Often regarded as a founder of bebop, Monk's playing style later evolved away from that form. His compositions and improvisations are full of dissonant harmonies and angular melodic twists, and are impossible to separate from Monk's unorthodox approach to the piano, which combined a highly percussive attack with abrupt, dramatic use of silences and hesitations; a style nicknamed "Melodious Thunk" by his wife Nellie[1].

reason for these picks are, A) ?uesto [especially] and hub can give james a more modern sound while still keeping everything insanely funky, B) i caught the roots in one of hub's last performances with the roots [rock the bells 2007 in NYC] where the crew did a 30-minute james brown set and it sounded ridiculous, and C) their live show would be insane with james as their frontman

http://www.bbemusic.com/images/large/roy_ayers_cover.jpg

reasons for selection:
it's roy f*cken ayers, man! definitely a candidate for GOAT vibes player. vibes are essential for my group, and i think roy would kill it alongside ahmad jamal on rhodes. he'd really provide a lush yet funky sound to the band.
dude is a funkmeister. he's been involved in some 50 different projects, all with different sounds. the disparate nature of his catalogue can be efficiently demonstrated in a list of his collaborations: he's worked with fela kuti, was the man behind RAMP, and recently played on a talib kweli's 'in the mood' produced by kanye west.
possibly the most sampled musician of all time behind james brown
as with my other picks, he can write, interpolate, jam... you can kinda get where i'm going with this band; everyone can write, or stand to the side if need be.

Anyways, i pick Chick Corea, despite his Scientological leanings. Dude is a percussive master on the piano (and for my lineup, the fender rhodes electric piano) and one of the most prolific and influential jazz pianists. very versatile, having worked with everyone from mongo "the man" santamaria through Miles Davis (his best albums IMO and my favorite rhythm section in jazz - pretty much) and Bela Fleck.

Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (born June 12, 1941)[1] is a multiple Grammy Award winning American jazz pianist, keyboardist, drummer, and composer.

He is known for his work during the 1970s in the genre of jazz fusion. He participated in the birth of the electric fusion movement as a member of Miles Davis' band in the 1960s, and in the 1970s formed Return to Forever.[1]

With my third round pick I select, Kenneth "Babyface Edmonds as a producer for my hunky, make-the-panties drop group. Babyface is the master of the commercial love song, and was really the king of r&b in the 90's. Some hit songs that Babyface wrote and/or produced include "I'll make love to you", "Water Runs Dry", "End of the Road", "Change the world" (Eric Clapton), "Everytime I close my eyes", "When Can I see you again", "How Come, How Long" (with Stevie Wonder) and much much more. Babyface produced on HUGE albums such as Boyz II Men's II and TLC's CrazySexyCool. Babyface doesn't have great abs and has gained some weight over time, but he will be in the backround of my group: writing, producing, handling the business, and playing the keyboard.

Maceo Parker: his name is synonymous with Funky Music, his pedigree impeccable; his band: the tightest little funk orchestra on earth.
Everyone knows by now that he's played with each and every leader of funk, his start with James Brown, which Maceo describes as " like being at University "; jumping aboard the Mothership with George Clinton; stretching out with Bootsy's Rubber Band. He’s the living, breathing pulse which connects the history of Funk in one golden thread. The cipher which unravels dance music down to its core.

Guitarist and songwriter. Founder of the influential heavy metal band Living Colour. Can play a variety of styles, including heavy metal, funk, R&B, punk, and jazz. During his solo career he's worked with the Roots, Mick Jagger, BB King, Public Enemy, and Mariah Carey to name a few. Really not sure how he'd sound with someone like Stevie, but given the fact that they're both extremely versatile I'm sure Quincy would be able to make it all work, lol.

I select AZ.

http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/5256/azformatcvrko5.jpg

From Wiki:

Quote:
AZ first came to prominence by appearing on Nas' landmark album Illmatic on the song "Life's a *****" (1994)—he was the only guest emcee to appear on that album. After a bidding war, AZ signed with EMI, and soon released Doe Or Die (1995) to more critical acclaim than commercial sales. The album's lead single, "Sugar Hill", became AZ's only major commercial success as a solo artist, reaching the top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and achieving Gold status. AZ's EMI contract was transferred to sister label Noo Trybe Records/Virgin Records when the EMI Label Group was shut down. In 1997, he and Nas appeared in an Sprite commercial.

AZ's fanbase grew considerably[citation needed] after he joined The Firm, a supergroup comprised of AZ, Nas, Foxy Brown, and Nature, with Dr. Dre and The Trackmasters producing. The Firm's only album, The Album, was regarded as critically disappointing. Pieces of a Man, AZ's second solo release, didn't sell well. Independently, AZ released S.O.S.A. to little fanfare in 2000. Soon, however, AZ signed with Motown/Universal Records and released 9 Lives.[1]

In 2002, he released Aziatic. A single from the album, "The Essence," was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. [1]The video to its first single, "I'm Back," received moderate MTV2 play. Instead, A.W.O.L. was released on September 6, 2005. [1]

AZ's sixth solo album The Format , was released on November 7, 2006. Since The Format, AZ has released a mixtape titled The Memphis Sessions and a J-Love mixtape titled The Return of S.O.S.A.[2] His latest album Undeniable was released on April 1, 2008.

With the 19th pick in the 3rd round of the All Time Music Draft, I select Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin

http://www.theworldsbestever.com/2007/09/24/jimmyPage.jpg

Why this is a good pick for me: Jimmy Page is regarded as one of the best guitarists from nearly everyone. His success in Led Zeppelin and startling solo's and rhythems are proof of his skill. I feel he will fit in perfectly with the lyrics and theme's of Lennon, and mesh with the vocals of Lennon and Elton John. Led Zeppelin has had harder rock songs like "Rock and Roll" and slower songs like "Stairway to Heaven", Jimmy will have no problem with playing with Elton John and John Lennon who are also not restricted to just slower music. I also feel he will ease up the pressure from Lennon writing the lyrics as Jimmy will be able to contribute good lyrics as well.

Information on Jimmy Page:

Quote:
James Patrick Page, (born 9 January 1944) is an English guitarist, composer and record producer. He began his career as a studio session guitarist in London and was subsequently a member of The Yardbirds from 1966 to 1968, after which he co-founded the English rock band Led Zeppelin.

Page has been described as "unquestionably one of the all-time most influential, important, and versatile guitarists and songwriters in rock history".In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Page #9 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, as a member of The Yardbirds (1992) and as a member of Led Zeppelin (1995).

A memorable quote from Jimmy Page about himself:

Quote:
Many people think of me as just a riff guitarist, but I think of myself in broader terms... As a producer I would like to be remembered as someone who was able to sustain a band of unquestionable individual talent, and push it to the forefront during its working career. I think I really captured the best of our output, growth, change and maturity on tape -- the multifaceted gem that is Led Zeppelin

Some facts:
In 2001 he was voted London's greatest guitarist in Total Guitar magazine's poll of the greatest 12 British guitarists.
In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named him number nine on their list of the "100 greatest guitarists of all time".
Page's solo in "Stairway to Heaven" was voted the greatest guitar solo of all time in a Guitar World magazine readers' pollSome of his solo's that will leave a mark on your soul:

CURTIS MAYFIELD
http://musicselections.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/curtis.jpg

From Me, not Wiki
Brother Curtis is one of the most spiritual, funky, soulful, strong minded, loving musicians in the past 50 years. Brother started out playing the guitar, but here is the thing for his different sounding instruments. He tuned them to the black keys of the piano. He joined a group in 1958 called Jerry Butler and the Impressions. After a big hit, Jerry left the group leaving it to Curtis, and the rest is history (Curtis would write/produce many hits for friend Jerry and other Chicago artist.)

In the '60' the Impressions battled only the Temptations and the Four Tops for best vocal group in the nation. He was one of (if not the first) to write about the black mans struggles with tracks like "Keep on Pushin" "People Get Ready" "It's Alright" "Choice of Colors" "This is My Country" ect.

In 1970, he saw he did everything group wise and ventured into his solo career. He started out with a band with his self titled 1970 debut featuring the message-ful single "Don't Worry If There Is a Hell Below (We're All Gonna Go".) After a 1971 Live album, he dropped the blaxploitation classic Superfly and the next year Back To The World. He continued to release albums after '74 Sweet Exorcist, but not to the success of his early album (but the material is still great, trust)

Later on, he concentrated a lot on producing. He did whole soundtracks like Claudine, Let's Do It Again, Sparkle and Claudine. He had earlier success as a producer for artist such as Gene Chandler, Major Lance, Five Stairsteps, the Later Impressions among others.

from me, not wiki:

one of the most influential bass players of all time, bernard edwards was a co-founder (with nile rodgers) and member of legendary disco outfit chic. together, they took disco into a new direction with their relatively stripped-down funky sound, and enjoyed massive success at the height of the disco era with hits such as "le freak", "everybody dance", "my forbidden lover" and of course, "good times". the chic sound was copied massively by other disco acts, and i think it it safe to say that what we know as dance music today, whether it is hip-hop or house, would not have sounded nearly the same if not for chic.

their influence can not be overestimated, and at the core of their sound was bernard edwards funky bass. he also enjoyed success in the late seventies and early eighties, producing (with nile rodgers) and playing bass on hits for - among others - sister sledge, diana ross, debbie harry, and sheila b. devotion. he also played bass on some of the songs on madonnas "like a virgin" alubm.

his bassline from "good times" has become one of the most copied pieces of music of all time, as artists ranging from (to name a few) queen to blondie to sugarhill gang to beastie boys to de la soul have used it. while that remains edwards's biggest single contribution to music history, his bass playing was always infectious, and always made people dance.

With the 23rd pick in the 3rd round, I select Willie Dixon.

http://www.riverfrontmurals.com/images/dixonmural.jpg

With the recent influx of bassists drafted, I wanted to grab my guy. I know there are more talented bassists, but I want to keep this band old school, a band that you might see performing in a small, smoke-filled club. I am looking to create a soul blues band, with a tempo no faster than this song performed by BB and Buddy Guy, written by Willie:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39W46dLA8BI
I think with Willie and Ray you have a great base to build on with BB as your lead guitar and singer. To me this is great music in its basic form and would kind of be the building block for the direction the band goes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcqqyL-Y6Go
I think the band would work well if Ray also sung some as well, but I want to stay away from too much on an R&B feel. I’m really not a huge Ray Charles fan, but it is songs like this where you can really see the soul he puts into his music and I think his voice would do nicely to balance out the pure blues BB has in his voice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIGoq...eature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIGoqv8zlRE&feature=related)
This song is really inspiration of what I think of when I think of soul blues. Obviously with only 8 picks I am going to have to pick up some undrafted free agents, but to me this is the type of music I can really get into because it combines some of the old blues that I really love and the soul music that makes it a little more upbeat and fun (I know it sounds like a contradiction):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qtm66Z3lebc

As for more on Willie, this is from Wikipedia:

William James "Willie" Dixon (July 1, 1915 – January 29, 1992) was a well-known American blues bassist, singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer.[1] His songs, including "Little Red Rooster", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "Evil", "Spoonful", "Back Door Man", "I Just Want to Make Love to You", "I Ain't Superstitious", "My Babe", "Wang Dang Doodle", and "Bring It on Home", written during the peak of Chess Records, 1950-1965, and performed by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Little Walter, influenced a worldwide generation of musicians.[2] Next to Muddy Waters, he was the most influential person in shaping the post-World War II sound of the Chicago blues.[3] He also was an important link between the blues and rock and roll, working with Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley in the late-1950s, and his songs were covered by some of the biggest bands of the 1960s and 1970s, including Bob Dylan, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Allman Brothers Band, and the Grateful Dead.[3]

I like that Willie can really play what in my eyes is the true blues because my band would perform some songs like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irXywhqP1ho

Willie can keep this fun and upbeat and I think this type of bass would fit in nicely, but I don’t have a trained ear and I’m not sure if I would need a bass guitar as well to re-create this sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjdcPKcyWsI

He isn’t playing bass in this song, but this was the first song I heard Willie Dixon on:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDKvjNf3Y7k

And this is a good song that really shows how original Willie was:

Thurston Moore.

http://www.aquariumdrunkard.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/thurston-moore-live.jpg

Moore and Ranaldo soon formed Sonic Youth, serving as the band's guitarists, with Moore on lead vocals. The band signed to Neutral Records, then to Homestead Records, and then to SST Records.
Live in the Netherlands (with Sonic Youth), 1991
Live in the Netherlands (with Sonic Youth), 1991

In 1984, Moore married Sonic Youth bassist/vocalist Kim Gordon; the pair have a daughter, Coco Hayley Gordon Moore. They currently reside in Northampton, Massachusetts.

He and Ranaldo make extensive use of unusual guitar tunings, often heavily modifying their instruments to provide unusual timbres and drones, They are known for bringing upwards of fifty guitars to every live gig, using some guitars for one song only.[2] In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Moore and Ranaldo the 33rd and 34th Greatest Guitarists of All Time.

[edit] Work outside of Sonic Youth

In addition to his work with Sonic Youth, Moore has also released albums as a solo artist.

He and Gordon released a few songs as Mirror/Dash, a reference to their respective nicknames. ("Mirror" being an alliterative pun on "Moore," and "Dash" being a pun on Flash Gordon.)

Moore has collaborated with scores of musicians, including Lydia Lunch, DJ Spooky, William Hooker, Christian Marclay, Mike Watt, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Tom Surgal, William Winant, Nels Cline, **** E.S.P., Daniel Castro, Glenn Branca, Chris Corsano and My Cat is an Alien. Most of his solo/duo collaborations have been instrumental, and are generally improvised and/or noise based.

In the early 1990s, Moore formed the side band Dim Stars, featuring punk legend Richard Hell of the Voidoids. Moore performed solo on the side stage of the 1993 Lollapalooza tour.

Additionally, Moore also contributed guitar work[citation needed] and backing vocals on "Crush With Eyeliner," which appeared on R.E.M.'s Monster LP.

Since 2004, Moore has recorded and performed with the all-star noise collective To Live and Shave in L.A., the lineup of which also features Andrew W.K.. He recorded with the band at Sonic Youth's former studio in Manhattan, and later performed with them at the George W. Bush "anti-inaugural" Noise Against Fascism concert in Washington, D.C., named in reference to Sonic Youth's 1992 song "Youth Against Fascism." Moore curated the "Nightmare Before Christmas" weekend of the All Tomorrow's Parties music festival, in December 2006.

Moore directed the music video for Pavement's song "Here," from Slanted and Enchanted.

Foot is a collaboration between Don Fleming, Jim Dunbar and Thurston Moore.

On June 21, 2007, Moore revealed to Spin Magazine that he would be releasing a solo album titled Trees Outside The Academy. The album was recorded at J Mascis' studio in Amherst, Massachusetts. The album is made up of mostly acoustic material and features Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and violinist Samara Lubelski. The album also features collaborations between Mascis and Charalambides' Christina Carter, who performs a duet with Moore on the track, "Honest James." The album was released on September 18, 2007, on Moore's label Ecstatic Peace.

dasher your the idea for this thread was good but you let in some terrible drafters that ruined the whole thing.

J$ and Manly Stanley made gimmick picks, Strowshow's picks were determined by the fact that they were the only 3 musicians he could name, and Doomsday picked Bobby Digital as the 8th overall musician in the musical draft.

thats just awful dude. come on. why were these people allowed to draft???

I have a couple of comments.

Vapid is really on his way to creating a very solid All Star classic rock band. There are a few other posters who have taken this route (ryantheporchkid, kingpala), but vapid's really sticks out to me.

Boozehound has created a pretty freaky line up so far. It's a good one though, because Duane, Corea and Pastorius are all studs. He has one of the groups with the overall highest quality.

The guys going for jazz line ups all have solid picks, but I also have to say that it's probably the easiest route to take.

I put my own group in the Heretik/Dasher category. Definately guys with potential, but they need a few more rounds before everything really starts to come together.

David Bowie, Brian Wilson, Bruce Springstein, Frank Sinatra, and a certain Latin guitarist not only being skipped in the first round, but not being picked at all warrants a wow...just wow. I also figured someone was going to put together a girl group, but then I realized this is an estrogen deficient board.

I don't know about that. With the way McCartney & Harrison have fallen in the draft, someone could have easily recreated the Beatles (and possibly add an elite guitarist and a better drummer to the fold), but what would have been the point? We all know the Beatles were great, it kind of defeats the purpose of the draft IMO.

Yeah There are a lot of big names that have fallen off. Brian wilson would be great just as a songwriter (Love petsound sto this day). That being said, I went for overall talent and compatability with my style (which wont be apparent for another round or so). So far, everyone I want is still available. I think in adraft with more hip hop cats this group would get more recogniztion. But since we seem to have mostly rockers and jazz/fusion./funk cats, it may go unnoticed. **** I really only know nas outta that group. can you tell the last rap album I bought was raising hell? Not really, but not too far off. what about bringing in a great producer or arranger from another genre? I know you said you dont know much outside of HH, but a guy like brian wilson (while insane) would throw this off kilter enough without ruining it to make it a truly unique sound.

That being said, you cant really win a draft IMO. Its mostly an opportunity to see the different combinations people come up with and it tells you a little about them as a person as well as their musical background. Its been fun if a little too slow in the process.

You should add soulja boy.

nas has no musical IQ, he really is not an innovator or a innate musical trail blazer. he just raps the words he writes and lets other people handle the music aspect. he's a 1 trick pony. and his flow is usually plain and uncharasmatic.

premier also doesnt really change the formula for his music very much. and he really doesnt incorporate hardly any elements of other genre's into his beats. producer's like kanye and necro are actually far better at doing that than he is. and premier frankly is just flat out too hit and miss, there are a ton of unlistenable premo beats.

AZ would just be like adding sugar to soda.

dasher is right, they would be musically stale. many of the beats would be wack, nas would have a ton of bad/forced verses and AZ would basically sound the same on every song.

A guitar hero. Maybe the greatest white blues player to ever walk this earth.

SRV is THE greatest blues player. Ever. Black, white, mulatto, Mexican, whatever.

Latinos and Asians have been sh**ted on in this draft. Blacks and whites are definitely running things.I plan to take on a couple of Latinos if a certain someone falls to me. My band will feature multiple percussionists. I have Tito Puente in my sights. He and Papa Zita would be deadly.

Asians? F*ck em. Maybe some one will pick up Ravi Shankar.

There's that one latino guitarist I'm surprised no one has taken yet.

I think in general there's a lot of guitarists being slept on.
How come none of those (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cadbYIzhqQ) has been picked yet?

no dylan, no careDoesn't sing or play well enough to warrant a selection in the first 3 rounds. Virtuosos are favored in this format. He may be used as a songwriter only, and therefore could be selected later.

i was strongly considering him but i decided on keith richards because his blues roots and i thought he would bring some of the stones crowd over to hear aretha and marvin
