Hey guys, I've been getting back into basketball after a long (really long) hiatus.

I played b-ball back when I was a little kid, in my city league. But afterwards, I didn't really ever play - I played a bit in high school just for fun, but never joined the team or anything.

I'm 24 now, in college, and I've been playing steady b-ball. Probably about two days a week I play for about 2-3 hours.

Now, I'm 5'10, and I tried to see how high I could jump, and the highest I can reach is just the bottom tip of the backboard!!

I want to know, is it realistically possible for a guy my size to be able to ever dunk a basketball on a standard 10 ft rim?? I'm thinking about starting some of those vertical leg workouts.

Please tell me what I have to do guys, I really want to dunk. :rant :D

I've seen jump systems help 5'8 guys be able to dunk. I'm about 5'7 did them for about 2 months and I got to touch (barely though :D ) the rim...

The highest I was jumping was when I was 24 or 25. Playing three mornings a week plus a little more. No training otherwise. I quit playing for about 3 years and resumed at 29. I had a goal to dunk before I turned 30, trained hard this time and was able to get a few down. At 6'1", I have a couple inches on you, I would say you should come pretty close, just set small goals every month.

Search for "Flying 101" on youtube. Some dunkers on the video is 5'10" - 5'11".

Crazy stuff.

Thank you KUMO!!!  :D

I just started in my intramural league at my college, and last night was our first game. We lost both games!! :( But we are a new team so hopefully we can do better next week.

I'm gonna start these vertical jump programs - Do they really require a lot of time? It looks like I'll have to follow a pretty strict schedule! :D

Wouldn't say it's too late. I mean, sure it's too late if you're thinking about getting really serious, like, professional serious, but it's never too late to get pretty damn good.

I'm 5'2 and I'm hitting the net/tip of the backboard of an indoor basket. I just do alot of conditioning, build up those quads, and am working to up my flexibility as well. I've thought about doing a vertical jump program but heard it's pretty intensive on the joints? Kinda got bad knees already, Osgoods, but any thoughts as to how bad it is?

Yes, it is. I'm 16, 5' 11" and after training my vert I can dunk some of the time.

Hopefully, I'm still growing and I'm also planning to work on my vert again soon.

What if you're 22 (23 in a few months)?

Do you feel its too late to make something of basketball and take it as far as possible?

Graduated from university in May this year, and now my education is finished I wanna tak it far. I felt it was important to stay focused and take a few years out to get my degree.

What do you think?

do you reckon its possible for a 6ft 16year old to dunk. im about an inch off touching the ring but do you think if i did vjb i could have a chance at dunking it?

Kumo
12-13-2008, 06:28 PM
Sure, just train smart. Stay consistent, eat well, you'll be up there sooner or later.

Although at 6' you should naturally be about at rim, but still go for it.

Cheers Kumo:cheers:

I'm bout 5'9 and can get most of my hand on the bottom of the backboard. I might try out some of these and see how i go.

I've still got a lot of growing to do so i should reach about 6' but i suppose time will tell:hammerhead:

I'm 5' 11", 16 years old, 36" vert (after lots of jump training) and I'm a British caucasian. I can just about dunk :D

If you really commit yourself to an exercise routine you should be able to.
