I don't get how you can judge someone's IQ who you have nevver spoken to off camera before

Normal IQ, not basketball IQ.

How are we supposed to rate the IQ of people we've never spoken to, and only seen in the context of sports related soundbytes?

We might a well try and judge their pottery making skills.

You can tell how smart people are by they speak. People judge you that way.

No, you can't. Many people are nervous speaking on camera, are non-native English speakers, or have very strong Math/spatial perception/analytic ability...but a poor verbal capacity.

Is Dirk stupid because he doesn't speak eloquent English?

Guys, this is based on what you believe, it doesn't have to be their real IQ's, just what you think is the order. Here's what I think:

Chris Bosh
Steve Nash
Kobe Bryant
Tim Duncan
Gilbert Arenas
Dwyane Wade
Dirk Nowitzki
Kevin Garnett
Shaquille O'Neal
Chris Paul
Dwight Howard
Paul Pierce
LeBron James
Amare Stoudemire
Tracy McGrady
Carmelo Anthony

Ive heard it on Broadcasts, I dont know the whole Deal with American Schools, but he was like an Acedemic All-American or something like that...I dunno if thats bogus or whatnot, but something like that.

Really smart, thats what I recall, could be someone else though.

Bryant went to UCLA for a few summers, just didn't play for them. And seeing as the NBA (and pro sports in general) is loaded with guys that never actually graduated and only went to college to launch their pro careers it really doesn't mean much whether these guys wet to college or not. If so-and-so has a degree with a high GPA in a tough major it means something, but that's not what most players go for. Anyhow, I agree with the sentiment that you can't tell how smart these players are by just seeing them in a few interviews. Sometimes an interview will show that someone's a little ignorant or a poor speaker, but you learn little else.

My girlfriend is going to Northeastern University in MA to be a real-estate developer, and has kept at least a 3.5 GPA the entire time she's been there, yet she flushes a whole potatoe down the toilet, thus clogging it and forcing us to call a plumber.

Book smarts don't mean jack when it comes to the real world.

Agreed, but I'm talking about overall intelligence - not just book smarts. I was really going for clarity and higher level of thinking, not how hard you work in school. But yeah I see what you're saying. Maybe your gf is not actually very intelligent, but makes up for it with her hard work. I'm sort of the opposite.

You make a good point, but I'm going under the assumption that I can tell when a person is being shy or if they are foreign and can't speak English too well. But you make a great point about the math/spatial perception as opposed to English ability. In fact, I'm one of those people who has a tendency to be better at math/spatial perception.

Regarding Amare - from his use of words and the way he kind of repeats the same phrases in interviews, you'd think he probably isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. And we've all heard stuff about him not doing well in school. But according to this, his IQ is pretty high:
http://jockbio.com/Bios/Stoudemire/Stoudemire_bio.html

The Eagles were happy to have Amare, despite his miserable academic record. It wasn't that he was a dumb kid. In fact, on an IQ test at Lake Wells, he scored higher than almost every kid in the school.
But yeah - from our viewpoint as fans, and with our limited information, he doesn't exactly convey an image of being exceptionally intelligent.

You gotta remember that a lot of players who were raised in well-to-do families will be well spoken. This obviously makes them seem smarter, but of course it doesn't mean they have high IQs.

Very well said, best post in this thread, and I really appreciate you putting that link up. Although this goes against my thread lol, it's a factual, interesting point you bring up. Many of you are right, it's wrong to judge a person based SOLELY on how they speak because they could be...

a) a bad public speaker
b) a foreigner and thus unable to speak English well
or
c) the most important point - they could be very smart but yet not show it in the way they speak (they could be intelligent in mathematical, scientific, and spatial abilities but not in verbal abilities - in fact this is the way I was and still am)

You learn something new from every thread every day.

Kobe takes way too many bad shots to give credit for a ultra high BB IQ.

The highest IQ guys are the physically limited dudes who still manage to compete based on court sense, savvy, and fundamentals

ie: Shane Battier, and back in day Rodman.

Bryant's shot selection is more about his mentality than his intelligence. He's a scorer, that's what he wants to do, that's what he's always done, and that's what he always will do.

First I'mma spit it like this we begin with the educated, Big Fundamental,
Second comes the tall, gangly awkward German who's issues are mental,
And don't be fooled by CP3, whose underrated of age and being sentimental,
And of course fourth comes to our greatest active player named Mr. Bryant,
Proceeded by the weird looking lefty Raptor whose jumper is automatic,

I'm sorry to say but the rest is extremely up for debate,
But if ballin' is your profession then does ascending your mental state,
Really come first in your goals to pass, rebound, win and dominate?

knowledge and IQ are totally different things
IQ is a just ratio between your mental and actual age using standardized testing
this is a ridiculous thread because there is no way to actually know for sure who is smarter than the other
if it doesn't relate to basketball IQ, then this is more of an off-topic thread, isn't it?:confusedshrug:

 That's f*cking hilarious. I never went to college, and my fiancee went to college for 1 year before she couldn't afford it, but I think through high school I had a GPA around 3.0. She was consistently around a 3.7. When she went to college for 1 year she made the Dean's List. Yet there are things everyday that just make me say, "WTF?" that are just commonsense things.

So obviously she has the better record and slightly higher education. But she's stuck working at Macy's as an assistant manager for $19/hour while I get to work for a company inspecting drives parts with no college experience for $25/hour, while anything between 40-50 hours is time and a half ($37.5/hour) an anything over 50 is double time ($50/hour). Then if I work a holiday while I'm over 50 hours I get time-and-a-half + double time which is $62.5/hour.

She always punches me in the arm when I bring up the fact she did all that hard work in high school, went to college for a year and wasted her time there...while I coasted through high school not really being stressed over anything and I get paid more than she does for an easier job.

By watching several interviews and highlights of each player listed, I was able to use advanced algorithms to estimate (within 5% accuracy) the real IQ of each player listed (Except for Dirk, his accent f*cked me up). Here they are in decreasing order of intelligence:

150 Kobe Bryant
140 Chris Bosh
125 Tim Duncan, Steve Nash
120 Kevin Garnett
115 Chris Paul
110 Dwyane Wade
105 Amar'e Stoudemire
100 Tracy McGrady
95 LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal
90 Paul Pierce
85 Dwight Howard
80 No Chill Gil
75 Carmelo Anthony

(?? German) Dirk Nowitski

My algorithm failed when it came to Dirk. I put together sophisticated neurological maps by studying highlights and then post game pressers FROM THE SAME GAMES (very important). Dirk speaks in a thick, sexy German accent and this interfered with the efficacy of my algorithm. I was unable to calculate an IQ score, instead concluding that he is simply German.
