Hopefully this thread will have some spirited, clean and civil debate. Also feel free to post any updates for the ISHers who won't be able to keep up with the race, talk about your day and experience at your polling place (especially first time voters) and feel free to bring up some of the local issues and elections here as well. Pretty much anything Election Day related goes here. And go. . .

If you're under 100k, Obama won't raise your taxes. But if, like me, you live in Mass you lost all of your money to income tax anyway so wouldn't notice even if he did.

I seriously doubt you'll break the record turnout. Elections back into the 19th and 18th centuries had insanely high turnout rates, partially because the eligible voters were a smaller group and were a more homogeneous ensemble, but more importantly democracy was a newer concept and there was more of a direct connection between the eligible voter demographic and what was happening in governance. You might see a record number of total votes today, but you'll never get the turnout percentage up to 80% or 90% like it once was.

Got up today at the break of dawn.

And by break, I mean the pitchezt of the black, ahd the silence

Jogged from my dorm to the local Storrz voting booth with only my Red, White, and Blue trunkz on. "Gonna Fly Now" waz raging through my ipod, and the wind whipped my cold, bare torso like an angry dominatrix. My lungz were experiencing extraordinary pain, icy breezes were ferociously stabbing my throat, and I had not eaten nor drunken for four nightz!

In a surreal motion, I took out my lockpick, expertly unlocked the door, front summersalted into the building and then proceeded to enter the voting booth. And my oh my waz it packed! I could not bear voting after anybody, so I took out the post-it cardz, quickly wrote "I.O.U uno BJ" and handed it out to my predecesorz in line, sprinted towardz the booth. And in an epic fashion I raized my finger voted MCCAIN, *said sike*, and scribbled down the lettaz O-B-A-M-A. And alas, I fainted, unconscious on the flo', until I woke up and saw forty gorgeouz woman just looking at me with awe and wonder. I waz helped up rushed to a medic, and I refused. REFUZED! I had to share dis story with everyone around me.

I just don't understand how abortion can be viewed as the make/break decision in some people's minds when it comes to determining who they are going to vote for. Abortion effects only that person and their immediate family, perhaps. Sorry to say, but I honestly don't care what random strangers do with their unborn children. It's their choice. Healthcare policies, the economy, etc effect all. Most people in their lives will never be affected by abortion.

The "traditional" family has been falling apart for years now. I don't get why people use that argument at all when trying to rally support behind a republican candidate. And besides, didn't McCain cheat on his first wife?

Although Montana is only 3 votes, Obama's been campaigning HARD there while McCain ignored it until last wednesday. You know he's scared. If Paul can get at least 4-5% of the vote, McCain will lose.

Many voters consider a candidates view on abortion a key indicator as to whether a candidate will push Christian beliefs.

What are some of the local voting measures that are important to your state, county, or city?

In Maryland the major ones are early voting and whether or not to allow casinos to be built in Maryland.

Early Voting
Authorize the state legislature to enact a process whereby voters will be able to vote in person in the two weeks preceding an election.

Designate three polling places in each county to be opened for the 10 days before Election Day.

Arguments Against
It is politically motivated to get more Democrats to vote in a state where they have a 2-to-1 advantage in voter registration.

Because Maryland is a state that doesn't require voters to show photo ID, this measure increases the chances of vote fraud.

Those who cannot make it to the polls on time can already vote absentee.

Implementing the measure will be costly.

Arguments For
It will increase turnout and decrease long lines.

Early voting makes it more convenient to vote, and encourages voter participation by those that don't have time on election day.

Absentee voting isn't sufficient in all cases, including unforseen circumstances that may keep a voter from making it to the polls before they close.

Casinos
Stipulate that the Casinos recieve 65% of the slot profits the first year, 50% the next five years and only 33-40% in the following decade.

Potentially produce $600 million annually for the government.

Arguments Against
The referendum establishes an Education Trust Fund and dedicates half of future proceeds to our public schools.

It provides Maryland with an additional source of funding, beginning with licensing fees in early 2009.

If this referendum fails, students, teachers and support staff will be left with outdated facilities, larger classes, outdated textbooks and shortages of materials.

School systems will be left with fewer resources to recruit and retain the best teachers and support staff.

Arguments Against
State-sanctioned gaming is a form of regressive taxation, often against those who can least afford it.

It's unethical to fund the government through gambling.

A study of Illinois casinos found that for every $1,000 of casino revenue, miscellaneous retail and wholesale revenues declined by $247, or nearly 25 percent. The eating and drinking revenues within the casinos goes up, but it goes down at nearby eating and drinking establishments.

The presence of slot machines in close proximity to existing resort areas will "cannibalize local businesses by siphoning disposable dollars away from restaurants, hotels and other established forms of entertainment.

It's all about the Supreme Court. A constitutional ban on abortion probably will never happen so it lies in the courts hands. The next president may have the opportunity to add 3+ justices. Stevens is 88, Ginsburg is 75, and Kennedy and Scalia are 72.

Losing Pennsylvania and NH is a big problem for McCain.

McCain now needs to "run the table" in all battleground states. He can't lose one.

Obama = All Kerry states + Iowa + NM + any battleground state for the win

wow is anyone seeing this ballot garbage in Florida? Why the hell can't people just simply make the ballot to where you can just fill the damned thing in? Instead they're having it to connect two boxes together to make an arrow? :wtf:
*edit* i bring this up because now there's confusion and they're inspecting right now. The lawyers that repped Bush and Gore in 2000 are there looking over it

What's the problem? We have that type of ballot here in Indiana and it's the simplest one I've ever seen. You draw a line, that's it.

Anyway, so much for the Bradley Effect. McCain may as well concede. California'll give Obama 263, add Oregon, Florida, Arizona, Indiana, whatever, game over.

No one listens when your teacher says "read the directions" anymore? There's VERY clear directions with a diagram on the top.

But I'd have no qualms with an easier, I guess, fill in the bubble type design. Get a damned nationwide paper ballot already, have PSAs explaining them all the way leading up to the vote. There's no reason not to.

Not Arizona lol. That's McCain's home state. But yeah, winning California will give Obama 262. And looks like he might win Florida (which has 27 votes), this thing should be tabulated very soon, and we may see who the new president is soon.
