In this thread, I will delve into the music contributions of various cities across the globe. I will list native sons and daughters of the locales, and provide links, and bio information where applicable.
City #1: Memphis, Tennessee

Contributions:
Stax Soul
Crunk
Proto-Rock
Rock N' Roll
Country
Memphis has a very varied musical history. It first gained renown for Delta Blues. WC Handy, Memphian is credited with taking blues from a little-known regional style, to being one of the most important forces in the history of American music.
Delta Blues Men like Howlin Wolf, John Lee Hooker, and BB King all refined their craft in and around the famous Beale Street.
Memphis was also the petri dish where artists like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash honed their skill under the guidance of Steve Philips at Sun Records.
Stax Records brought the world the musical stylings of Isaac Hayes, Booker T and the MGs, The Staples Singers, Sam and Dave, and a host of others.
Soul men and women have long called Memphis home. Al Green, Otis Redding, and Aretha Franklin are the most famous of their number.
Southern rap pioneers 8-Ball and MJG called Memphis' Orange Mound neighborhood home, and it served as a inspiration for their very influential work.
Crunk was created in the clubs of Memphis. Hynotyze Camp/Three Six Mafia refined a bass heavy, uptempo style that replaced house as the biggest influence in Southern Hip Hop.

City #2 Oakland , California
http://eastbayeda.org/images/living/fullsize/OaklandTribuneNight.jpg
Oakland, California's music history is rivaled by few cities in the world. It's hip hop imprint alone is enough for it to hold it's own with other music capitals. Rappers who are native to or called Oakland home:2pac, E-40, MC Hammer, Del the Funky Homosapien, ICE Cube, The Hieroglyphics Crew, Too $hort, Mac Dre, Richie Rich, Yukmouth, The Coup, and Digital Underground. I am sure I am leaving some artists out, and that in itself is testament to the depth and diversity of the Oakland hip hop scene.
Soul and Funk music has a strong presence in The Bay, Sly Stone an Oakland native, his pioneering funk greatly influence Motown. Songs like The Temptations-Cloud 9 were made as an answer to the popularity of his work. Tony! Toni! Tone! and The Tower of Power were formed in Oakland. Raphael Saadiq(TTT) and Lenny Williams(TOP) have had solo sucess after splitting from thier respective groups. Underrated songstress Goapele calls the city home. Hardship survivor R&B and reality TV star Keyshia Cole came up the hard way in Oaktown.
The core of Green Day is also from The Bay.
Latin percussion has also found a home in Oakland. Father and daughter Pete Escoved and Sheila E. have gone on to great success.
Oakland also has a great deal of classical music history, but I will not pretend to be an expert on that genre. If you are interested wiki is your friend.

Are you implying that you can't just do one city from each state, and that Anchorage, Des Moines, and Billings don't have famous musicians?

Are you implying that you can't just do one city from each state, and that Anchorage, Des Moines, and Billings don't have famous musicians? I AM implying that those cities are not important. I am not limiting myself to the US. Havana, Nassau, London, Birmingham, Paris, Port Au Prince, Kingston, and other international locales will receive love. Doing it by state would have made some of the posts laborious. The Cali, Florida, and Texas posts alone would be massive. As far as middle of nowhere cities are concerned Omaha will get some attention.

City #3 Muscle Shoals, Alabama
http://www.messyoptics.com/bird/FameRecording.jpg
Muscle Shoals, Alabama is probably the world's most unassuming and underrated music capital. Muscle Shoals has had a hand in the development of Country, Soul, Rock,Blues, and Gospel music. Two studios are largely responsible for it's contributions to American music. FAME Studio and The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio are those studios. Artists go to Muscle Shoals to tap into it's signature sound, and to escape the limelight.
Duane Allman once pitched a tent and camped out in the parking lot of FAME studios in an effort to be near the recording sessions occurring there. He soon befriended the studio owner Rick Hall and Wilson Pickett. During a lunch break, Allman taught Pickett "Hey Jude". Duane and Wilson's version of the song was eventually recorded with Allman on lead guitar. Upon hearing the session, Pickett's label Atlantic Records. asked who had played the guitar solos on the record. Hall responded with a hand-written note that read "some hippie cat who's been living in our parking lot." Shortly afterwards, Allman was offered a recording contract. The audition for The Allman Brothers Band were held at The FAME Studios.
Recording his Christian records in Muscle Shoals was thought to give Bob Dylan's records credibility. During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the area was a hotbed of creative talent as both white and black artists worked side-by-side. While this "desegregation" of artists is usually praised for its innovation, it was nothing new for most artists in North Alabama. In fact, the common practice of white and black musicians working together in Muscle Shoals can be traced as far back as the 1930s, regardless of racial tensions elsewhere in the American South.
The Swampers who were the session rhythm musicians at FAME Studios. Lynyrd Skynyrd gave them a shoutout in their classic song "Sweet Home Alabama". "Muscle Schoals has got The Swampers, and they've been known to pick a song or two."

City 4: Nawlins, Louisiana
http://coworknola.com/resources/_wsb_567x358_New+orleans+skyline+night.jpg
When discussing American music New Orleans is an essential stop. The NO is the birthplace of Jazz. Or as Duke Ellington liked to call it American Classical Music. In addition to Jazz, New Orleans is also known for Funk, Bounce(Hip Hop), R&B, Zydeco, Cajun music, Blues, Cow Punk, and Sludge Metal.
New Orleans is unique because of it's Creole culture. In New Orleans you find a rich mix of French, African, Spanish, Caribbean, and Southern American Culture. These influences can be found in the music. New Orleans lives and breaths music. Even in a post-Katrina and Napster world crate digging, music store culture is still alive and well in New Orleans.
New Orleans has long been a hotbed for hip hop. It's native second line culture fused with hip hop to form Bounce. Bounce is known for it's danceable rhythms and it's reliance on call and response. For a good example of Bounce see Lil Wayne's Walk It Off on the Dedication II mixtape. Very successful independent record labels have called the 504 home. Master P's No Limit Records and Baby's Cash Money Records developed a template for success that has been followed by hip hop entrepreneurs all around the country.

City #5 Chicago
http://www.gallagher.com/art_photos/chicago_skyline_and_lake_michigan.jpg
When it comes do describing the musical history of Chicago, the term hotbed is insufficient. Blues, Jazz, House, Hip Hop, Rock, Pop, Soul, Classical, Gospel, and Punk all have found succor in the streets and smoke-filled backrooms of The Go.
Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, and Howlin Wolf brought Delta Blues with them to Chicago during The Great Migration. In addition to Delta Blues Blacks brought Jazz, and the early traces of Rock and R&B. Rock in the form of Bo Diddley, and Soul in the form of the great Sam Cooke.
Other Chicago Blues and Soul Artists:James Cotton, Paul Butterfield, Gene Chandler, Willie Dixon, Lou Rawls, and Blue-Eyed practitioners The Everly Brothers.
Jazz superstars "The King of Swing" Benny Goodman, fusion-genius Herbie Hancock, and underrated legend Jack DeJohnette are Chi bred. Others of note: Steve Cole, Steve Coleman, and Eddie Harris.
90's R&B's greatest practitioner calls Chicago home, that man is singer-songwriter-producer-rapper-amateur porn star R.Kelly.
All Punk fans should own Patti Smith's Horses. It is credited with helping to birth the genre.
Mello Collie and the Infinite Sadness, arguably The Grunge era's best record, was produced by Billy Corgan, and Chicago's Smashing Pumpkins.
The Gay Pride/Rights Movement found it's soundtrack in Chicago in the form of House music. House Music is characterized by it's use of heavy bass, disco rhythms, use of altered voice vocals, and breakneck fast tempo.
Chicago is also home to many closeted-homo overrated rappers, like Kanye West, Common, and Lupe Fiasco. Chicago is home to some real Gs, they include Twista, Do or Die, and Crucial Conflict.
And how can I forget the band Chicago. They are one of the most successful bands of all-time.

City #6: Atlanta, Georgia
http://www.slrobertson.com/images/usa/georgia/atlanta/downtown/atlanta-skyline-night-b.jpg
Atlanta is the beneficiary of the reversal of The Great Migration, since the late 80's Blacks, affluent and not so affluent have been streaming back into the south they abandoned decades ago. Atlanta's economy has greatly benefited from the carpet baggers, and so has it's music. Atlanta area entrepreneurs have christened Atlanta as the new Motown, and the success of local record labels makes this claim a valid one. The music in Atlanta is characterized by a willingness to adopt facets of music from anywhere.
Record labels that call Atlanta home:
LaFace:Goodie Mob, OutKast, Toni Braxton, Ciara, TLC, Monica, Usher
Grand Hustle:T.I, Yung Dro
So So Def:Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Dem Franchise Boyz
Disturbing Tha Peace:Ludacris, Chingy
The Atlanta music scene tends to get disparaged because of the prevalence of pop influenced club records. Crunk originated in Memphis, but it was further refined into it's Bill Board Pop Charting form in the discos and gentlemen's clubs of Atlanta. The Booty Shake form of Bass music has found a home in The A. Local artist bring their homemade music that is generally a fusion of Bass and Crunk to the amateur nights of the local stripclubs. If the songs are loved by the strippers, it can find it's way to local radio. The Ying Yang Twins, "Whistle While You Twerk", and Pastor Troy's, "Pop That P*ssy" were born in the shake it clubs.
Though hated on by a large cross-section of America, "Snap Music", developed organically among teenagers in the Bankhead section of Atlanta. Unfortunately for a lot of local artists, who were eating off of the craze, The Viacom Music channels overplayed the snap cuts, and destroyed the nebulous subculture that was developing around the music.
Atlanta hip hop has produced some of the most outlandish characters in music. The Dungeon Family is chock full of characters. City #8: Houston, Texas (special guest editor L.Kizzle)
WELCOME TO THE CITY of SYRUP
"Houston, Texas mothatucka's is where I stay"
Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the US, brought some heavyweights into the music business. We gotta start way back in the day, way way back in the day. The 1920's. Most of the blues musicians were influenced by Blind Lemon Jefferson, a Texas blues legend. These young musicians included Lightin' Hopkins (from 3rd Ward, more on 3rd Ward later), Blind Willie Jefferson among others in the Great Depression era. By the 1940, the Texas blues sound had fully developed and a host of other were following in the footsteps of these Blues legends. T-Bone Walker, Gatemouth Brown and shouter Big Mama Thorton (the original singer of Hound Dog) were just a few. That's not it, a decade later, some other prominent blues men came from the Houston Texas scene. Albert Collins' Johnny Copeland and Mr. Johnny "Guitar" Watson rose in this period.
From near by Port Arthur, some other talents were brewing, two who left too soon. The Big Bopper, an early important Rock & Roll artist was just begin' his career when he fell with others starts Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly (from Lubock, Texas.) Blues shouter Janis Joplin, at the height of her career, a year after Woodstock and two after going solo was gone at 27 in 1970.
Around 1970, a blues/rock Band from Houston was making a name for themselves, called ZZTop (named after ZZ Hill from Naples, Texas.) They went on to a great career, being inducted into the R&R Hof in 2004. Kenny Rogers started his career in the mid-'50s He has sold many records in the country, pop field and is also an actor.
The Jazz scene while not like it's neighbor New Orleans, has some history. The Jazz Crusaders, featured many musicians from around the Houston area, were big in the Jazz/Funk fusion of the '60s and '70s. Flutist Hubert Laws has played with Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, Sarah Vaughn among others.
Can't forget the R&B and Soul scene of Houston. It's nothin' like listen' to some soul on a Sunday morning. Joe Tex, from nearby Beaumont, was instrument in Soul music in the '60s and '70s with many top ten hits on the pop charts. The "fifth Beatle" Billy Preston was born hear in Houston and was one of the great organist of his time, a child prodigy. Archie Bell and the Drells, Leon Haywood and Jeniffer Holiday called Houston home.
By the late '80's hip hop was making a move to the dirty south. The Geto Boys and UGK are the Kingz of Texas hip-hop along with another guy ... That guy was DJ Screw. He started a movement that went across the US, the Chopped and Screwed movement where he slowed down tapes and chopped up the vocals. The Screwed Up Click was born and featured southern rappers from the Wards, and Parks from Houston. Lil Keke, Big Moe, ESG, Fat Pat, Z-Ro, Trea are just some from the SUC. The Northside didn't want to be left out so in the late '90s, Swishhouse was born, an alternate to the SUC. Michael 5000 Watts, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Mike Jones and Paul Wall come from this camp. Another rapper not associated with these two clicks is Devin "the Dude." Eightball & MJG also located to Houston for a quick second.
Around the same time, a girl group was making a name for them selves, Destiny's Child. While the other member of the group (past and present) made names for themselves, it was Beyonc

I had written a lengthy post about the music of Kingston, but alas my post was eaten by ISH's timeout. Instead writing it again, I will devote this post to my first crush: Patra. Seeing Patra dance confirmed my heterosexuality.

if Houston is going to make this list, Dallas and especially Austin are a must. I'd also toss in Boulder since it may as well be Austin with snow. Just saying...

City #10: Minneapolis, Minnesota (special guest editor L.Kizzle)
"Why don‘t you purify yourself, in the water … of lake Minnetonka"
Minneapolis, where to begin. I’m not gonna start from where y’all think I’m gonna start from, I’m goin’ all the way back to, way back. The Andrews sister were the first major artist out of Minny. The recorded many tunes, (including a ton with Mr. Bing Crosby.) These young ladies sold over 100 million records begin’ in the 1940’s.
The rock scene in Minny was something also. Lipps Inc. hit big in ‘79 (the disco era) with Funkytown. The Replacements were formed in the late 70’s and released their same critically acclaimed album “Let It Be” in 1984. Soul Asylum formed in the early ‘80s and by the early ‘90s were Grammy winners.
But the king on Minneapolis, or the Prince is of course Prince Rogers Nelson. By the mid ‘70s a new funk scene was brewing out of the Minneapolis/St/ Paul area and Prince was at the forefront. By ‘78 he had released his debut album with Warner Brothers records playing all the instruments (27) and doin’ everything else. The next year he’d form a backing band (later known as the Revolution.) By 1981 he created the Time featuring many of Minny’s top musicians including Morris Day, and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Also that year, his bassist (and best friend) Andre Cymone left the band for a solo career. He’s also produce for his wife Jody Watley. In ‘82 he released his breakthrough 1999, he created a sexy girl trio Vanity 6 and Jam & Lewis left the Time to form their own production duo.
1984 was the year of Minneapolis. Prince released a masterpiece in Purple Rain and he and Morris Day and Apollonia starred in the film of the same name. Shelia E., famed percussionist came on board the Prince family. Morris Day left the time for a nice solo career, but it was their guitarist Jesse Johnson who went on to have 3 critically acclaimed solo albums in the mid-‘80. Cymone replacement BrownMark started Ted a funk band Mazarati and Prince formed The Family. Alexander O’Neal, the supposed lead singer of the Time was kicked out by Prince before they became major players but that didn’t stop him. By ‘84 his career was on the rise.
Jam and Lewis were one of the top hit-makers in the industry as they would produce Janet Jackson breakthrough Control, with the famed Minneapolis sound all over the LP. Cymone was busy turning out hits for Jody Watley, Morris and Jesse ()had their fair share of success at this time, and oh yeah, Prince was still doing his thing. Releasing “Sign ‘O‘ the Times” in 1987. Wendy and Lisa left Prince by the late ‘80s and were on their own. Jill Jones released a critically acclaimed LP that did nothing’ on the charts. Ta Mara and the Seen were produced by Jesse Johnson and had a big hit.
The Minneapolis sound was everywhere. Even known Prince associate artis were using the sound. The Jets, a family from Minny, hit big around this time. Mint Condition hit late in the decade, sort of New Jack/sort of R&B/sort of Jazz a little bit of everything. Time drummer ‘Jellybean’ had a hand in their start.
First Avenue, the famous club from the film, Purple Rain was a major factor in these artist honing their chops.
