Is it necessary to be able to shoot threes?

Would you rather develop your shooting game, or your slashing?

Who's a better player offensively and why, Kobe or Dwyane Wade?

Who are some slashers in the past? Which can lead to more high point games?

I'm trying to figure out a style for myself and I don't know whether I want to be a slasher or shooter. Some people say both, but I don't know. If you had to pick one side to be greater than the other, which one would it be?

To any guards, are you more a shooter or a slasher?

Slashing Pros

-High field goal percentage
-Can go to the line (draw fouls)
-Gives you space to take easy jumpers

Slashing Cons

-Risk of injury
-No three pointers?

Shooting Pros

-Can draw your defender in so you can drive on him
-Catch and shoot possible from anywhere on the court
-Don't have to worry about traffic inside
-Better for streetballing because of smaller space?

Shooting Cons

-Can get into a shooting slump

I think you should work on both aspect of the offense. It makes your opponent guessing what you're going to do this time.

I think you answered the question yourself.

Shooting Pros

-Can draw your defender in so you can drive on him

If you have a good respectable jump shot then the defender has to respect that or you can make it too the lane. I don't believe this question should be answered by one or the other. You should have both weapons in your arsenal and use them however you see fit by studying your defender. For instance if they play off of you expecting you to drive then take the jumper, if they dont, then take them to the rack.

Another con to being a slasher is the fact that you have to learn to finish at the rim. You cannot be afraid of contact and not be worried about someone coming across the lane to bust you.

I know you dont want someone to answer the question with a "both," however to honestly answer it I have to say that. It will make you more of a well rounded player and not so one sided in which the defense already knows what you are going to do before you get the ball.

Some good questions.
Lots for me to think about too.

Do you seem to just be one or the other style. I mean, do you kinda just do one or the other. Or is it a matter of choice for you?

Yeah, you don't want to be one dimensional. Make them respect your game all around. Take the slower guys to the rack, shoot over smaller players. They won't know what to do other than try to keep the ball out of your hands. Always good to be good at all aspects. I play the wing and I post up. There's nothing that says you can't be great at both of them.

well its better to be a slasher because you can train your shot...and when you can drive you can also open some room for your teamates...

Its better to be a shooter cause things open up for you when you drain a few three balls

Find a good balance in both... although being a slasher is better imo.

Slashing is overrated in my opinion. Not saying that you shouldn't try to develop that part of your game because if you can finish in addition with your ability to get to the rim then that's good. I'd say knowing how to move without the ball combined with the ability to shoot is better than just being able to get to the basket. There are guys who can get to basket at will but can't finish worth a damn. Guys like Reggie Miller, John Havlicek, Jeff Hornacek, Richard Hamilton, etc. made their living of constant movement, knowing where and when to cut, shooting off of curls, etc. and no know one is going to confuse them with Kobe Bryant. Lastly I'll agree with the other poster who said to work on both and make them respect all facets of your game.

If you are a good shooter slashing will become easier. Defenders will have to mark you closer, giving you a greater chance of blowing past them, especially since they have to take shot fakes more serious than with none shooters.

So I would say it's better to be a shooter. Unless you are like Glen Rice used to be, who was a great shooter, but didn't have a clue what to do as soon as he put the ball on the floor.

depends what players you have on your team, because if you have a couple slashers then being a shooter is ok, but you should really be able to do both. I try to develop as much as I can because your going to use everything in the game whether you realize it or not
