NEW ORLEANS Veteran power forward Juwan Howard could be a Charlotte Bobcat in the next few days, the Observer has learned.

Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins confirmed late Tuesday that he's closing in on signing Howard, a 16-year NBA veteran and a member of the “Fab Five” era of Michigan basketball.

“We've had some discussions with Juwan's representative, David Falk, and we hope to get something done,” Higgins told the Observer.

While Howard is well removed from his All-Star days, when he averaged 22 points and eight rebounds, Higgins believes he can still play in more than spot duty. Thought he was retired.

Thought he was retired.

I don't think he ever officially retired. He was with Denver, and they were going to let him go. They eventually did, obviously.

I just don't get this signing though. It makes as much sense as Dante Culpepper signing with the Lions.

Howard wasn't retired, but he pretty much could have been. Why come back just to play with a crap team? Surely a former all star who still has some offensive ability for 10-15 minutes a game could find a home with San Antonio, or Boston, or some other contender. I wouldn't mind having him in Cleveland if we didn't already have so many big men on the roster.

Juwon Howard doesn't have many positives left, except for the fact he is a good veteran presence.

He's not going to teach those kids much about winning though. It's like Abdur-Rahim giving a seminar on being a winner.

Quality person...but he has nothing left as a player. You have to respect his passion for the game though: he's made 100+ million and is still willing to be a bench scrub to keep in the league.

I loved juwan as a rocket. had he not gone down prior to the dallas series in 5, we would have won that series. anyhow, he can still give you a nice to minutes of production.

At his age I'd rather retire than play with the Bobcats

are the bobcats really that desperate? they can't find a power forward anywhere else to fill the roster?

Special arrangements will be made for Howard to travel in the cargo hold when the Bobcats go on road trips:

perhaps they are signing him so they can send him over to LAC for Kaman? but Okafor Diaw and Howard on a front line isn't to bad they could make a run for 9th place in the east.
