it's not german, it's obviously east-european.
and that's how you pronounce the "W" in slavic languages.

yeah its kind of annoying.. i always wondered why they pronounced brett favres name as farve
because it's apparently french and pronouncing it "farve" is still closer to being correct than pronouncing it as "favor" or whatever the typical american would pronounce it as.

FFS, didn't any of you kids take language courses in school?

actually??

There's just certain words, mostly names, that are spelled all crazy-like. I know there's a lot of places in England, such as Worcester, where the spelling is waaaaaay off, there's extra letters in the name and stuff.

Wiki to list of names with horrid spelling/pronunciation discrepancy. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_names_in_English_with_counterintuitive_pro nunciations)

Favre has some French ancestry. I know that a lot of words in French end in a silent -re, which merely modify the letters before it. Perhaps his name was French, pronounced like "Fahv", which could have evolved into Farrrv as people over-pronounced it and/or got confused by the R.

Nowitzki is polish last name. Why do you think they should pronounce his name like he was English - if he isn't?

DOOR and POOR

"oo" in the "door" isn't pronounced the same like "oo" in "poor".

Get it?

when he was younger they did pronounce his name like it is spelled...

but when everyone realized he is a basketball God then Cuban decided to have his name pronounced a little different...because it was clear at the time that he is much more important than all the other humans on the planet with the his last name...

I thought everyone knew that...:ohwell:

Man, you American-influenced kids need to learn to speak proper English. Door and poor rhyme for any educated native English speaker.

Don't try to play smart with me, you Americans will be 100% illiterate in 10 years

"Hello, what did u doo last knight?
I went our 4 a drink
What r u doin latr?
Iono
LOL
WTF
Are u all rite?
"

And all that...90% of youth are communicating that way.

And with my "poor - door" example...ok...can I rephrase my question?

DOOR - MORE......how come it ain't "DORE" or "MOOR" ?

Smartass. Shut the hell up.

America is a huge country with many different dialects. Depending on where he lives they may not rhyme. See also: marry, merry, and Mary. Depending on where you live those are all different or all the same. Also don/dawn, cot/caught, ferry/fairy, etc. Even some weird ones like black/block and boss/bus.

Door / poor / more all sound the same here. Poor / pore are the same. Sometimes you might see someone say "pu-or" for poor. But only if in a formal setting. Kinda like pen / pin.

Being a loyal subject of the Queen, I speak her English. ;)

New Zealanders are the worst. I swear they only have 3 vowels in their vocabulary. Cot, caught, cut, and cat all seem to rhyme to them. :lol

I literally can't pronounce Kryzewski. It's "shuh-chef-ski" right? Can't do it. Something about the chefski.

Nowitzki is not a German name because its origin is clearly not German. And....thats pretty much end of story. Thanks for playing though.

So, is Rodriguez not Spanish because Rodrigo is a German name? What about Sanchez?

Furthermore, what about all the English patronymics from clearly Hebrew names? Johnson?
