Don't get in a war of words with Shaquille O'Neal. He's undefeated in verbal warfare.
Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy took at a shot at O'Neal after the Magic's Tuesday night win against the Suns, criticizing O'Neal for "flopping." O'Neal had gone to the floor while defending Dwight Howard on one play and admitted after the game that it was a flop, "like everyone else does to me."
But O'Neal unleashed on Van Gundy before tonight's game in Miami. He rarely speaks before games but did so to a group of reporters and then again to the Republic to send his message tonight.
First, here's what Van Gundy said, "“I was shocked, seriously, shocked. And very disappointed cause he knows what it’s like. Lets stand up and play like men, and I think our guy did that tonight.”
Now, here is O'Neal with some more profane moments retracted:
"He (Howard) came with the same old, stale Patrick Ewing move so I tried to stand there and take the charge. The new rules say if you come through, you fall. But as I fell, I realized that it was a flop and it reminded me of Coach Van Gundy’s whole coaching career. The one thing I despise is a frontrunner. First of all, none of his players like him. When it gets tough, he will become the master of panic like he did before and he will quit like he did before. The one thing I despise is frontrunners. Yeah, he’s got a young team playing good but don’t be a frontrunner. Him and his brother and even the legend on the bench ain’t done what I’ve done in my whole career. So flopping would be the wrong choice of words."
"I just tried to take a charge. The (expletive) rules say you can’t stand there and get hit. You’ve got to fall. The (expletive) got the same old stinking move that Patrick Ewing has been doing his whole career. I went down, got up and didn’t complain. I see him and Stan complaining the whole game because they’ve got to. Remember, I’ve done more than him, his brother and Patrick Ewing."
"Stan Van Gundy reminds me of a broke navigational system. He knows everything about everything but ain’t never been nowhere. Think about that. If I’m right here and I type in the address of where you’re going, I know where it’s at but I’m not going there."
"When a bum says some (stuff) about it and I respond, you can (expletive) cancel that cuz I know how he is in real life. We’ll see when the playoffs start and he (expletive) panics and quits like he did when he was here (in Miami). And you (expletive) print it just like that. Do I look soft to you like you can say something and I’m not going to say something?"
"Notice they didn’t play me straight up. We’ll see how far they go cuz I know Stan. I said this a long time ago but I was actually talking about him: 'When the general panics, the troops will panic. Like in business, when the head panics and takes out all his stock, what happens?"
"All the players hate him. The players don’t even like him. I hate frontrunners. I really do. I don’t like any frontrunners. There’s a pecking order involved. I’ve been there six times."
"I ain’t going to let no bum like him rip me and not say anything back. You can cancel that (expletive) all the way. Usually, I let (expletive) go. Not that. Not him. Hell no."
"The rules say when a guy goes through your chest you’ve got to fall to get the call. It was a flop. You’ve watched me play for 17 years. I don’t play like that."
"I’m not going to sit around and let nobodies take a shot at me and he is a nobody to me. And if he thinks he can get in a little press conference and take shots at me like I’m not going to (say) something back, he’s got another thing coming."
Guess so.

Shaq isn't arguing that he didn't flop, he knows he did, and I think he did that to mess around with Howard (Obviously he doesn't like him), Stan (Clearly has a vendetta against him) and everyone who plays against him. They all flop on him, so he is doing it to the "next shaq". But for him to rip him apart like that clearly shows he has hatred for those three. (Maybe not so much for Ewing)

not surprising since this is one of those rare shaq periods in which he feels like actually trying and the refs apparently have instructions to avoid calling him for all but the most obvious and worst fouls.
meanwhile if howard had shaq's body and deliberate blindness by the refs then he would be the MVP for many, many years... same as any player who worked hard at basketball, and the league is filled with them.

This. The childish back and forths are all well and good when it's good natured, but not when you start calling out career accomplishments, especially when Van Gundy'd have a ring (probably) if it weren't for Riley. You've got damn near a fist of rings Shaq, you're unquestionably at least a top 10er all time, enough with the trash talk, let the game do the talking. Let something go already, it's getting old, how many coaches has he killed now?

I don't understand some of the responses in this thread. Some people are saying Shaq is the man and he owned Van Gundy. Yes his comments were funny to an extent but they were also extremely unprofessional. From past memory Shaq has had beef with Kobe, Phil, Riley, Dwight, Bill Walton, Bosh, Penny, Van Gundy and now Ewing too. There seems to be a repeating pattern here. Shaq is happy to dish it out all the time but his personality is so insecure that he cannot take ANY criticism and always overreacts. Like for example his attack on Dwight was uncalled for, and why the hell did he have to bring Ewing into it? Jordan was the GOAT and had even more reason to have an ego than Shaq....but I don't remember him constantly calling out players and dissing their game (despite the fact he was better than anyone to play the game).
Shaq can be very entertaining but he spoils it all by picking fights with almost everyone in the league. He has spoken badly about EVERY team that he has left. Hardly what you would call professional behaviour. Contrast that with someone like Duncan, and you can see why I would always prefer Tim on my team.

No Shaq is an idiot. What was the need to have a go at Ewing, who as far as I know, has done nothing to him. It smacks of disrespect that he undermines a HOFmer and all time great.
Similarly we all know that Dwight has a long long way to go before he can be compared to Shaq. However Shaq's response was completely unecessary and unprovoked. Can you imagine Jordan ever replying that way in response to comparisons between him and Kobe? Everyone knows MJ was superior, as I am sure he does, but he never suggests this openly by ripping apart Kobe. Reason is because he is not insecure like Shaq, who constantly needs to be in the spotlight.
FWIW I think Van Gundy's response was pretty good:
Van Gundy told the Orlando Sentinel Wednesday night that it appears O'Neal was able to dish out criticism but unable to take it.
"He's dealt with this like he's dealt with everything else," Van Gundy told the Sentinel. "I think it's funny."
Van Gundy told the Sentinel he was unaware of any problems with O'Neal when they were together in Miami.
"Whatever. I don't know ... that's his estimation of my coaching. I'm not going to worry about it too much," Van Gundy told the Sentinel. "Actually, that [Shaq's criticism] puts me in good company, very good company.
"He's taken shots at Phil Jackson and Pat Riley, so maybe I should consider it an honor."
i think shaq is just being himself. it's not insecurity. it's just his whole nature and how he played basketball his entire career. look. if greg ostertag scores a layup on shaq, shaq's gonna feel he has to dunk on him 15 times to get even.
guess he did the same with van gundy.
Shaq being classless and hypocritical as usual.

Perhaps Stan's comments were provocative. But this response is hardly out of character when considering shaq's past history: Kobe, Phil, Riley, Ewing, Bosh, Dwight, B.Walton have all been on the receiving end before. Stan only called Shaq out because he called Dwight out so explicitly. He was only defending his players. Stan would have respected Shaq if he had come and played like a man, using his skill to beat Howard and the Magic. That didn't work, so Shaq decided to resort to flopping. Shaq has all the potential to beat the Magic and Howard with his skill, but instead he resorted to trying to beat them with the Refs.
The Magic don't have the need to talk ****. They either back it up on the court, or they don't. Shaq has to resort to talking to try and prove he's still the best. He has accomplished a ton, but he is a waning star now... You'd expect him to act like the rest of the NBA and go out with some dignity. For the most part, the NBA is full of class acts. Their is far less bad blood than there is in college sports, games usually end with hugging opponents and smiles from the players. The Olympic team from 2008 are the new prototypes of superstars. They back up their ability on the court, you won't see them back-stabbing each other through the press... They are real men.

The only player shaq respects that he played against is Hakeem the dream.Maybe wade too
Jordan? Duncan?
Either way Shaq always acts like a spoilt kid and comes across as a tool

I don't really get the reasoning abilities of a lot of people on this forum. I don't know if you're all retards or 7 yrs old still learning what common sense is. What Shaq said is CLEARLY over the top insulting in relation to what Van Gundy said. WTF is a 'front-runner' anyways? :confusedshrug:
But Shaq has taken shots at Dwight, Ewing, Van Gundy, his brother, and Bosh completely out of the blue. WTF did they all do to deserve that?
Most of you probably don't even remember when Phil has a minor criticism of Shaq, and Shaq came back and blasted Phil.
Shaq is just the biggest baby in terms of handling any criticisms. And he's got a bunch of allstar ballot 7yr olds riding his coattails because he can beat everyone up, therefore he must be right. Its the same **** in the Terrell Owens thread where people defend him because he can beat everyone up :ohwell:
Well, Stan brought up Howard, so he opened up his own player for that criticism. Van Gundy specifically said Howard played like a "man", and that Shaq didn't.
As for Ewing, I think he just got caught in the crossfire.
GTFO Coaches talk about games, Shaq flopped, and that's what a coach will speak on. Shaq would've dissed most other players on such a blatant flop too. He's the big hypocrite.

At least the fans aren't holding back their disgust for the player who couldn't withstand one losing season and bolted toward a then-contender.
Talk about a front-runner.

I would love to see Ewing jump into this. Of all people that Shaq slimed, Patrick got it the worst. How do you diss the entire career of a Hall of Famer like that?

:oldlol: Shaq always GOES in on Pat Ewing. He's still salty when back in 95 when Shaq apporached him, he pretty much just waved him off.

Hall of Famer or not Ewing's got nothing on Shaq as a player.
As classless and immature shaq's rant was Ewing's better of letting it go.
Shaq is amazing. Just when I was starting to like the guy again he pulls stuff like this to remind me exactly why I started hating his guts in the first place. I'm surprised about the Miami Herald article. I thought him and Wade were tight. Seems like there is no bridge he won't burn. It'll be interesting to see who at Phoenix hates his guts & vice versa when he leaves there.

Wasn't that David Robinson?

I don't care who was the better player. Inappropriate comments like that are inexcusable and Ewing should hold him accountable, at least with some kind of statement. I wouldn't let Shaq get away with this, if I were Patrick.

What's Ewing gonna do Hoover Shaq into one of his nostrils?

I can't believe so many ISHers are giving Shaq the pass on this. If this was any other player I'm pretty sure we'd all be calling him a classless crybaby b!tch.

Jeff Van Gundy was so mad at Shaq's comments about his brother, he grabbed onto one of Shaq's legs and wouldn't let go.

Shaq is funny to a point, but after awhile, it gets old. It's cool to hear a guy speak his mind, but it's getting old hearing about all the guys he's beefing with.

Once he started sucking up to Kobe again, it pretty much sealed the deal that I wouldn't listen to him again.

The Suns are in a very very tight race for a play-off spot....not good to have this kind of distraction.....
