View Full Version : Michael Jordan vs. Scott Burrell

After one of the Bulls' practices in 1997, Scott Burrell, Jordan's teammate, challenged Jordan to a game of one on one. They played and Burrell had a good chance to beat Jordan with the score tied at six a piece (going up to seven). Burrell had the ball, but Ron Harper who was watching the game on the sidelines called Burrell for traveling. Jordan got the ball back and without hesitation drove past Burrell and dunked the ball making it a 7-6 victory. Michael got the last shot to win, but Burrell was right up in MJ's face trash talking. MJ didn't say a word and just walked off the court. A few days later Burrell convinced MJ to play again, but Jordan won easily this time. Again, Jordan just walked off the court without saying a word. But Burrell couldn't keep his mouth shut. Burrell said to MJ, "C'mon, let's go back out there and finish this!" Jordan replied, "You just want to play so you can go tell your kids when they grow up that you beat Michael Jordan once. What am I gonna tell my kids? I beat Scott Burrell? Big deal. They'll slap the hell out of me."

Thats why I love MJ. He knew how to carry himself in a positive manner but when it came to the game of basketball he was a cold blooded killer

It was actually that Payton was telling Jordan, "you ain't special, Mike - I got my ferraris and mercedes, too." And Jordan replied, "yeah, but you have to pay for yours." :oldlol:

Classic. But I'm sure he meant it in jest. Didn't Burrell get traded/let go after only a year or two with the Bulls? Hmmmm, beef?

I remember they had a fake 23 in that game. Probably put Jordan's stats onto Burrell out of spite.

Scott Burrell was a good young player with Charlotte, he was among the league leaders in 3pt shooting % a few years, and was even in the 3 point shooting contest IIRC.

His game started really coming around and then he had some bad injury. He was even an MIP candidate one year. He signed with Chicago and that pretty much sealed his fate. Never got any minutes. He was traded in the Dickey Simpkin trade and went to G.S.

11/5/2 in your second NBA season in just around 31 minutes per game isn't horrible for a guy drafted 20th overall.

Jerry Stackhouse Beat Jordan 1 on 1.
Now we find out Scott Burrell almost did too.

You guys honestly think Jordan would have a chance against Kobe 1 on 1?
