View Full Version : If someone told you their favorite movie was "____________" you'd know you hate them

If someone said their favorite movie was ________, you'd know you hated them. It could be something obvious like "Sex and the City"/"Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift" or it could be a movie like "Swingers", which I actually like, but people who claim it as their favorite movie are usually complete cheese d*cks. Looking for more than just the title of the movie here to make a good thread. why you hate the movie and/or the people who love it is part of the required answer. you will be graded (possibly degraded).

Seriously, I heard through a friend that a guy at are school was dumped by his girlfriend because he wasnt enough like "Emmett" and that he was a disapointment... THIS POOR GUY GOT DUMPED FOR A FICTIONAL VAMPIRE.

I dunno how many threads have been created here asking people what their favorite movie is, and three months back, over half of them listed "The Dark Knight", like they'd never seen a decent movie until last summer.
Falking pathetic.

I remember that shit. I was involved in a lot of those arguements saying that movie was way overrated. It was a good movie, don't get me wrong. It's just nothing too special outside of the Joker's part.

Scarface. I can't believe the number of people who love that movie. It's a good/great movie. But favorite movie ? Come on. Is that the only gangster movie you've ever seen ? And people who think that are usually not too bright.

Agreed. When I watched it I was like "What ? That's it ?". Too much hype. Even the Joker was not that special. Good movie, good perfomance, but really overrated.

I'll give Ledger his due, it was one of the greatest performances I've ever seen. His performance and the action doesn't make up for everyone else. That said, I still love the movie, but to think It's anywhere near GOAT status is just laughable.

Good call on Scarface. It became almost a f*cking fashion statement at one point just to say that this was your favourite movie. People who do have this down as their favourite movie are usually the same generic loser that thinks they're cool as ice when they say that Scarface represents them and what they are about.

man...I came in here with one idea and then read two movies already posted that make more sense...
I came in here with Natural Born Killers in mind....the type of person that considers that film their favorite needs to be slapped around IMO
but...
Fast and the Furious mentioned in the OP...yeah, that is the type of person I probably wouldn't get along with...this would mean you are a 16-18 year old car junky with no appreciation for anything decent...
ScarFace...now I really liked tht movie when I was younger, as well as many of my freinds...but the type of person that would consider this their favorite movie is usually a young gangsta wannabe...and I want nothing to do with them...

I used that movie because there are people that consider that their favorite movie...
yes, movies like The Devil's Rejects and others are much more disturbing but I don't see that as being someone's favorite film very realistic...NBK is realistic asa favorite...
I mean...I could say "Malibu's Most Wanted"....but no one would ever say that...

dude we get it.
you think you're showing off your knowledge of "films" by talking about how you know obscure and unheard of movies that are WAY more brutal than those mainstream killer movies like NBK.
This thread asked about movies people would claim as their favorite. Natural Born Killers is a well known movie and would likely be named by some people. That is the entire gist of primetimes post. The movies you are referencing are unrealistic answers. Your response has nothing to do with primetimes. You are simply trying to jump in and be a "film buff" because you are obsessed with people thinking you know movies.
Seriously. We all see what you're trying to do. You've seen some foreign movies, and obscure slasher movies, er "films," and you want EVERYONE to know it. Great.

You obviously got offended. And once again, judging by the title, you cant tell what language it is unless you're a language expert.
Quit being an illogical dumbass. It was an extremely nit-picky criticism which points to being offended.
Are you brave enough to act like a smart ass to people faces? Or is it just because you can hide behind a screen? I have a feeling you would get broken in half like a twig if you tried acting like this in real life

If I judged people based solely on their movie interests, I wouldn't have many friends. I like a lot of foreign and indie movies, but sometimes people who share that same interest with me are too arrogant for me. (not saying I'm not, but in this case I don't mind being a little hypocritical) As long as the other person is open minded to the movies I like I'm ok with it.

I know you can't tell by the title. But how did you come to the conclusion it was Chinese? Just saying... You obviously read the names, but came to a conclusion based on your horse blinders. Many of you wear them.
Instead of coming to conclusions, I read more, and it told me that it was Japanese. You think I ever heard of the movie?
I couldn't even tell it was an asian movie with the title: Lolita vib-zeme or whatever. Sounds more european to me, only when I saw the director's name could I tell it was japanese.
Do movie titles like: "Old boy" "In the mood for love" or "Chocolate" tell you they're asian?
Neither could I. It sounded French at first.
Old Boy? Not at all. Chocolate either... But people can choose to read further on to find out the origins of the movie instead of making baseless comments.

That's what I was gonna say.
I dunno how many threads have been created here asking people what their favorite movie is, and three months back, over half of them listed "The Dark Knight", like they'd never seen a decent movie until last summer.
Falking pathetic.
The Dark Knight is one of my favourite movies of all time, for no other reason than because it was ****ing fantastic. It has its flaws, but its pros far far far outweigh them. Critical acclaim, commercial acclaim, one of the most memorable(or at the very least popular) performances of all time, and the list goes on. I'd be very surprised if your head wasn't right up its ass when it first came out, and its only now that you're hopping on the "overrated" bandwagon that everybody seems to cherish so dearly.
Tdk.
Have you even seen it yet?
I'm always pretty drawn to people with completely different tastes than mine.
The only thing I can't stand is when someone is ignorant, but doesn't recognize or acknowledges it. Every thing else is cool with me.

No nothing to do with following. I loved Batman Begins and it'd be in my top 20 easily, and I remember Patiently Waiting and my mind being blown several times throughout summer night viewing of Dark Knight. When the score came, and Bale was running away and the narrator was like... "sometimes the truth just ain't good enough," i had chills like f*ckin Tyrone Biggums. At that precise moment I could've called it my fav.
Perhaps its my memory, but that feeling wore off about six months later. Like I rewatched it on DVD, and it just seemed great but not epic. It's all good tho I'll take your word for it.

Damn. first post and the only one that bugs me. Depending on state of mind, I might say this is my favorite movie. (there's a few others that probably trump it, but it would be one of a few i'd consider saying if i had to pick ONE favorite) I agree with Dasher about all the quirky comedies that are topical and grow stale as the comedic collective concious catches up, but Lebowski is timeless high art to me.

I would never call it a bad movie, because its not. But I'm not gonna lie, it bored me to tears and I have no desire of watching it again. There are plenty of people who genuinely love the movie and thats all well and good. Yet there are also a good deal of posers who like it just so that they can come across as "artistic."
Also, I didn't like the way it depicted the Japanese. I wouldnt go so far as to call it racist, but it definitely bothered me.

Not in the good way, unfortunately. Still charming, quirky, and I dug the dialogue and kerater development, but I was hoping for something else.

a lot of people felt that lost in translation reached a new level of intimacy, depth and subtlety of drama.
i do see why people consider it pretentious, it is very moody and there is essentially no story, but that is what allows the film to slow down and explore the characters and settings. another reason people dislike it is because it is about upper middle class people and their personal issues and they cannot relate/feel empathy for the two characters because of this.
it is held as one of the great films of recent times and is a land mark film. this is not opinion. it is that way.
it is also one of my favorite films of all time.
note how i stop short of saying it is one of the greatest films of all time? imo it is, but i would never claim this as fact as it is certainly highly debatable.

I'm annoyed by people who absolutely hate and love lost in translation.
having spent a lot of time as a whitey in Asia I find Lost in Translation (I've watched it twice) to be quite, meh.
Bill Murray has been fabulous in movies as a morbid middle aged man(Lost in Translation, Rushmore etc...) and Scarlett is easy on the eyes while doing her moody bit admirably, but outside of that the movie lacks substantive depth.
When I watch it, all I could think about was that the writer/director never spent a lot of time in Asia and their observations are very simple, basic and irrelevant to anyone who has spent time there. Maybe that was the angle because Bill and Scarlett were noobs, but to me it could have been done so much better.

I thought I'd bump this thread because I watched Lost in Translation tonight for the first time in eight years. I've been meaning to give it a shot for some time now because I remember not really feeling anything about it in '04 but I thought maybe something had changed.
I'm afraid to say I still wasn't blown away by it. What is the major draw behind this flick? What do others believe makes this movie not just good, but great?
Edit: I wrote the above part way through the flick. As it has just now concluded, I'll say I can see where some people are coming from. I suppose I found it more relateable this time around than I did eight years ago. However, there were still too many barriers preventing me from loving it. I couldn't get over the old guy Bill Murray/young Scarlett dynamic. And I can't really relate to being stuck alone in a foreign country (even if that was just meant to represent the two characters being at a lonely, un-relateable point of their lives) and I actually couldn't vibe with the soundtrack. It had a heavy My Bloody Valentine feel and I was not feeling that.
So maybe I don't know how to adequately appreciate good film. I will say though, I just Wiki'd it and found out a member from My Bloody Valentine did five tracks for the film, so I feel pretty hipster-like for being able to recognize their sound prior to knowing it was actually them (or him in this case). Also, the Wiki relates it to Before Sunrise. I prefer that film to this one.

Sideways! This. A movie made by and for middle aged people, so if someone in their twenties says it's their favorite... :facepalm (ditto most Woody Allen)
I think In Bruges is good though. Quite gentle for a 'gangster' movie I guess. Tight plot, funny characters, Ralph Fiennes chewing scenery (although perhaps straying a little too close at times to Ben Kingsley's performance/role in Sexy Beast.) A solid 7 or 8 out of 10 for me.

I think TDK surprised many people, myself included. If you took out the DC characters the film still would have been great which many people wern't expecting. It was more of an epic crime saga along the lines of "Heat" than it's predecessor super hero movie "Batman Begins".

I'm extremely curious as to how a person being a big fan of an extremely popular movie affects them so much that, regardless of any other aspects of their personality, you simply have to dislike them.
So, according to many of you, if my favorite movie is one that is very popular, you're predisposed to hate me. Those of you who abide by that school of thought seem like a bunch of pompous, elitist snobs.
