Some of my favorites....yes, I'm going to count the last one (Homerish perhaps)

The player I think Kobe most resembles in terms of actual ability and performance....

if your intention is to educate, then share.

if your intention is to demonstrate that you know something i don't know, then leave it a mystery while reminding me that i am unaware.

if your intention is to place yourself above me, then commit to it, and do it with some panache.

LOL, Dave Bing is a great player, but he did not usher in the jumpshot (though he had one of the sweetest jumpers ever.) He was drafted in 66, by then the jumpshot was already the norm. The first players to make use of the jumpshot were Jumpin Joe Fulks in the late 50s and Pitchin' Paul Arizin in the early 50s. By the late 50s, Jumpshots were in and setshots were out, thougha few players in the early 60s still used the set shot (Dolph Schayes being one of them)

excellent post. i stand corrected in this regard, and am left guessing as to your idea of how he changed the game.

my guess would be setting the stage for a guard dominant game?

Oh, forgot that post. He was the first little guard to dominate on the offensive end. Basically a SG in a PG's body. In a book have, they called him "the original AI. "This was slightly before the onslaught of little scores like Earl Monroe ad Calvin Murphy among others.

What are you talking about? Him and the referee are simply conversing in a mild and civil manner about the high cost of beef. That and the economy, because that's always a topic of conversation.

It is said that what is called "the spirit of an age" is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. In the same way, a single year does not have just spring or summer. A single day, too, is the same. For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation.

The story about how he dead lifted 600 pounds of office supplies/could grab a coin off the top of the backboard/jump from FT line to the hoop without a running start is utter bull****. I love Wilt but he was known for exaggerating just about everything.

Great thread. This is why I get so pissed off when people use the term "weak era"; if it weren't for the legends of the past, we would have the players we have today. I am at work, so can't really contribute much to this thread OTM, bit will definitely add my two cents later on.

Two of the greatest Centers in NBA history do battle in the early 1970's

http://www.insidesocal.com/prepsports/julius.jpg

Julius "Dr. J" Erving in the Prime of his career in the ABA. Dr. J was the face of basketball during the 1970s. And was one of the first NBA players to have marketing success on and off the basketball court.

http://www.angelfire.com/linux/hayward1182/JPG/havlicek.jpg

On a franchise filled with legends, John Havlicek is the all time leader is points scored for the Boston Celtics.

http://jehingr.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/wilt-chamberlain-rim-action-photograph-c12874120jpeg.jpg

In the prime of his career Wilt once played ever minute of every game for an entire season. He finished the year averaging more minutes per game than there are actual minutes in a regulation contest. To this day, it is one of the most astounding records in American Sports history.

http://grantsrant.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/willis-reed-limp.jpg

Playing with a badly torn muscle in his leg, Willis Reed hobbles down the court in the NBA Finals. It is one of the most heartfelt and legendary moments in sports history. Reed and the Knicks would win two NBA titles in the early 1970's

http://hoopedia.nba.com/images/3/33/David_thompson_dunk.jpg

Seeking the 1978 scoring title, on the last game of the season, David Thompson scored 73 points in an NBA game. However he lost the scoring title by a few % points when George Gervin scored 63 points later that night. Gervin sat out the 4th quarter of his game once he knew he had beaten Thompson by .07 ppg avg. for the season. It is one the best "can you top this" contests in NBA history.

Louie Dampier was first Curry/Pete/Nash type offensive player . He was not that big force , but he was totally different and prototype of being shooting star , non-physicality playing .
