Going to say the Mavericks win in 6, I don't see how they can't. They have almost every matchup advantage except the PG position.

Dirk needs to perform like the MVP Dirk though. I say Mavericks win, Spurs lose for their 1st time in a odd number year since 2001.

I am not a fan of Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks, but i want to see them eliminate the Spurs in the First Round of the playoffs because It's the Spurs last chance to win another NBA Championship this year.

Dirk is going to own Duncan in the playoffs.

Dallas in 6.

Hawker

For people that are saying the spurs will win, is losing Devin Harris and gaining Jason Kidd really that much of a change to say that the spurs will win? Duncan has gotten worse and ginobili is out.

Rewind to the 2006 playoffs and we beat yall in 7 and we were even up 3-1.

I see the Mavs winning in 6 or 7.

Mavs in 5. duncan will prove to be more ground down and worn out that people realize. Jet will go nuts, Dirk will show up big time, and Eric Dampier leaning on Duncan will be the catalyst for the Mavs to advance to the 2nd round.

mavs in 6, no manu=first round exit

iLoveNBA

This is still an interesting series despite no Manu. Homecourt plays no factor in this series, it depends on matchup, strategies and executions.

Both of these guys are capable of winning on the road and at home. It's probably going to be 1-0, then 1-1, then 2-1, then 2-2, It's going to be like that till Game 7.

I still think the Mavericks win though, in 6 or 7. I don't see the Spurs advancing.

JustinJDW
04-16-2009, 11:11 PM
Spurs in 6. The Spurs always bring their best Game in the Playoffs. Parker will mop the floor with Kid, and Duncan and Dirk will occupy each other pretty well, but Duncan has always been better than Dirk. With guys like Mason, Finley and even the surprising Udoka playing their roles, add Homecourt Advantage and the experience of Popovich and the Spurs, and we are going to win the Series.

The only way the Mavs have a real shot is if Terry goes crazy and has MVP Performances, but with the Spurs A+ Defense, that's not going to happen.

Spurs in 6. :pimp:

I have a good feeling about my Mavs.
The Spurs are always hard to beat, but with Dirk in MVP shape (as all season long) I see us advancing in 6.
Key factor: Josh Howard has to play like he is capable.

Parker will have a monster series (25+ ppg), Duncan like Duncan (20+ ppg, 15 rpg), but Dirk/Jet/Kidd/Josh are enough to go on a deep playoff run.

Minus the few in this thread, the majority of ISH has San Antonio winning...but I just don't see it. The Mavs have a little hot streak going, and imo, San Antonio doesn't have the pieces to hang with the Mavs. Dirk has been killing it lately, San Antone with no Ginobili, add to the fact that their defense isn't as great as it once was, I don't see how they'd stand a chance honestly. I got the Mavericks in 6.

Do people forget the Spurs have Drew Gooden?

He's added fire power to a bench missing Manu.

He can't replace Manu but his offense is better than expected.

In his last ten games he's averaging 13 points and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes.

Yeah thats why some are picking Spurs to lose.

Seriously though the Spurs will need a big series out of Roger Mason, with Manu out him and guys like Finley will need to have double fiqure averages. Parker is going to have a big series I feel.

Mavs in 6. The Spurs without Manu are simply not as good.
Duncan + Parker are not enough vs Dirk, Kidd, Jet and Josh

dirkdiggler41
04-17-2009, 04:53 AM
I belive both teams can come off top. Neither team can stop Dirk or Duncan, they can only slow them down. Duncan could have been slowed down drasticly, but I belive Drew Gooden is to good on offense to let so much focus on Duncan. Tony Parker is the big factor here. If he is able to destroy the slow Kidd, the bad defender in JJ, they got a great chanse to win it. I belive Howard will actully guard TP. Anyway, I belive both teams can win this one. Its very hard to tell how it will be played out

i like my spurs in this series. this isn't the 07 spurs, but this ain't the 06 mavs either.

-no harris, allowing parker who is having a career year to go off (he's put up 31 and 7 against the mavs this season)
-damp is not going to hold down duncan. we're talking about dampier.
-mason, gooden, and finley are all good enough scorers to fill the manu scoring void
-did josh howard tweak an ankle against houston the other night? i read it was getting downplayed...
-dirk will be dirk, but i think our defense can make things difficult for terry

the spurs started to get back on the defensive track towards the end of this season. they finished 2nd in points allowed and 9th in opp field goal percentage.

It's good and bad for the Spurs, it's good they don't have to travel much and Dallas isn't the toughest team but even the weaker dallas teams played SA tough and WW3 within the state in the 1st rd for the beat up spurs is not the best thing.

don't forget the warriors!

Warriors was a choke job for sure. Heat, that's more just being weak mentally because some of those games were the worst officated games in history. i've seen the spurs in foul trouble, but i have trouble remembering any spurs series featuring as bad refereeing against he spurs as the ridiculous amount of free throws Wade got.

Tony Parker needs to average about 25 PPG to win this series and Duncan needs to average 20/10. Parker averaging 25 is more realistic than Duncan being able to get 20/10.

That being said, I'm still saying Mavs in 6 or 7. I'll say 6 for now.

the extended dominant run dirk is on hasnt gotten enough play. For the last 25 games, which he has scored at least 20 in every game, 28 ppg 8.7 rpg 2.6 apg 1.8 topg on 49% shooting. thats dominant.

Gonna be interesting to see how Dallas defends Parker, and what SA does with Dirk. My guess is both put their SFs on them (Howard and Bowen respectively)

Duncan will get his usual love from the refs, Damp really needs to box out well to make Duncans constant over-the-back violations ineffective.

Pop and Duncan did not agree to rest like crazy the last few weeks of the Regular Season, just for him to not show up in the Playoffs. You all can bet your asses that Duncan is showing up. The Playoffs are where the Spurs shine. What the Mavs should be worrying about is how to contain Tony Parker.

This series is all about matchup and Mavericks have an advantage there. Both teams lack centers unless you consider Duncan one. PG advantage is clearly the Spurs, but the Mavericks have the rest.

Sad but true, Damp's unassuming, lazy-strong lean, all game long, is his best attribute, especially useful in a series like this.

it is imperative Dampier plays well and stays out of foul trouble. He doesn't have to shut down Duncan, just slow him up a bit.

One of the most balanced offensive games from Dallas that I've seen in a long time. Bass and Barea got the team going in the 1st half when Dirk was on the bench, Howard stepped it up BIG time in the 3rd quarter and Barea took over early in the 4th quarter. Jason Terry only had 12 but he was hitting most of his shots, it's not like he was chucking up garbage for most of the game. Dirk was average but he made timely shots to keep the momentum.

Duncan spurred (heh) a nice 3rd quarter comeback, but Dallas kept the gas on and pulled away late. Doesn't look good for the Spurs. They'd need 3rd quarter Duncan to show up all game and get a big contribution from Parker (mainly more efficient; he had a good game). Bass looked very active tonight for Dallas, Howard played about as well as he's going to, and Barea's defense against Parker and timely offense was a surprise.

Can't say I watched much of the game. I was rather busy. Any neutral fans care to explain how it all went down?

i'm not neutral but i'll give you waht i saw with no spin. two things..
1) The defense is the second half by SA was very porous on the dribble penetration. Barea had a run where he was driving to the basket at will. In the 1st half, that wasn't happening as much. This allowed Dallas to get easier baskets and for the kickouts to result in easier shots. (The Barrea / Parker matchup at times went heavily to Barrea when Dallas made their run.) in the 1st half SA gave Dallas nothing inside, all jump shots until the very end of the 2nd.
2) When Dirk went out the Spurs took their foot off Dallas's throat and let up a little. The 10 point lead was only 4 (2?) at halftime even though Dirk didn't play the last 6 or 7 minutes.
3) It felt a little like Shaq in LA where he'd be killing, and the ball would stop going to him. Duncan was a BEAST (he had a play where they intentionally fouled him and he muscled the ball up with a little spin and it still went in). But down the stretch, it didn't go to him all the time.

That's what i saw.

BTW, on a totally not neutral point, Parker saying Barrea was flopping during the game is a total joke. Barrea fouls Parker, parker backflips and falls down. Parker hits Barrea, Barrea barely moves. How is that flopping? Flopping includes diving and exaggerating contact, no?

Hoggle
04-19-2009, 10:05 AM
When dallas would make their run, spurs would be totally off their game. On almost every possession of the spurs, they would settle for some kind of jump shot and the ball wouldn't go into duncan for a kick out. Spurs thrive on duncan being able to get the ball and then kick it out for a 3, but I'm pretty sure they didnt take a 3point shot from halftime until the last 2 minutes of play(they were about 8/9 i believe).

All in all I wasn't surprised that the Spurs lost their first game. It seems like its an ongoing thing that they lose the first game of the first series (didn't they lose the first game vs the Nuggets the last 2 seasons and then win 4 straight?)

kentatm
04-19-2009, 10:55 AM
Barea has killed the Spurs before this year. I forget which regular season game it was but Pop actually assigned Bowen to guard him b/c he was driving at will.

I also don't think Barea flops really all that much. Its more that the dude is just 5'10 170 and literally bounces off of bigger guys (ie everyone) that drive hard at him. He also is excellent at getting good position so make up for his height.

I posted it before in here but Barea is top 10 in the L at drawing charges even though he only gets 20 minutes a game.

Also, its extremely funny to hear Parker cry about flopping when Manu is his teammate.

kentatm
04-19-2009, 11:00 AM
Easy for the Spurs. The Mavs bench is trash outside of Terry. Bass is not going to have any impact in a series like this.

:oldlol:

JustinJDW
04-19-2009, 12:27 PM
It's funny, we made all the Defensive Adjustments for Dirk and Terry, but Josh Howard and even Barrea are the guys that end up killing us. No fair. :(

It was a great Game, until the 4th Quarter. It was tied going into the 4th. But the Spurs just fell apart in the 4th. We put Duncan in too late, we put Bowen on Howard instead of Terry too late, Parker did not drive enough in the 4th and we let Barrea do whatever the hell he wanted.

I can't say Duncan and Parker did not play great though, they did. Duncan looked like 27 again. Roger Mason played great and Drew Gooden played great. We dominated the 3-Point Line and even the Paint for a little bit, but the Mavs just played better in the 4th and that's what mattered and that's what got them to win. I tip my head off to the Mavs, but mostly Josh Howard. That fool was ballin.

Anyway, Game 2 is obviously a must win for the Spurs. If we go 0-2 to the Mavs with the next 2 Games in Dallas, then there is no chance. Spurs HAVE to win Game 2 and we HAVE to steal a Game in Dallas, just like the Mavs stole one from us. Hopefully we can go 2-2 going into Game 5, and if we do that, than we have a pretty damn good shot at winning this Series. But we have to win these Games before we can even talk about winning anything else at all.

Go Spurs Go! And this should be a kick ass Series!

JJBs improvement this year is directly related to Kidd being on the team. The two have become pretty good friends and Kidd has worked with him quite a bit this season to improve his passing and decision making.

At the start of the year, most Mavs fans and observers (myself included) thought of JJB as something of a toy that was fun for the spectacle of seeing somebody his size on the court but ultimately useless as a rotation player. There were calls to get a "legit" backup PG almost all year. People actually got pissed the Mavs wouldn't trade for Beno Urdrih and his crap ass contract b/c they thought JJ couldnt be of use.

RC though has shown creativity and patience with the way he uses JJ and along with Kidd has developed him nicely. Before the year started I would have never thought of playing a lineup of JJB/Terry/Kidd/Dirk/Bass but RC threw it out there (starting in late December I think) and it has proven to be very effective when the matchups are right.

Before the year started I would have never thought of playing a lineup of JJB/Terry/Kidd/Dirk/Bass but RC threw it out there (starting in late December I think) and it has proven to be very effective when the matchups are right.
I remember Avery Johnson saying that he liked JJ a lot, and he joked saying he's shorter than him. But I do like Barea a lot, I just hate Jason terry since he owns our team. :rant

What is cool about this Series is that both Teams can beat each other in any arena. They have the talent and experience to beat each other in any way in any arena at any time. The winner of the Series is just the Team that actually does it.

Get what I'm saying?

I'm not sure SA has enough firepower without Manu but I do understand what you are saying. At full strength these two would probably play each other to a 50-50 tie out of a hundred games with mini winning streaks sprinkled throughout. They have just matched up very well to produce entertaining back and forth games the last 8 or so years.

Avery claimed he loved JJ but his inability to let players play through and learn from their mistakes stunted his growth as a player. Hell, last year JJ didnt even see the floor for the last full month of the season b/c Avery thought Tyronne Lue would be a good backup PG for the playoffs. Avery then proved himself to be completely crazy by then NOT playing Lue in the playoffs and suddenly taking JJ out of the mothballs in game 5 only to watch him get predictably crushed after not having played a game in so long.

Was a pretty good game. Barea and Bass came up huge. Wasn't expecting the bench to step up when Dirk got in foul trouble. Bass came in, brought in energy and hit a couple of tough fadeaway Js. Barea's defense on Parker was key. Howard also played really well, didn't seem like the injury was bothering him. Nice to see that Duncan still has it in him, dude always steps up in the playoffs.

I just looked at the stats and Michael Finley had a -20 +/-.

What exactly is wrong with Tim Duncan's knee's?

Is he not able to run? Play more minute's than he normally does? Jump higher?

He's obviously not at 100%, according to Popvich, so what percentage would you say he's at?

If you want to see how Duncan feels, see him on defense. If he is just ok and he's not there at the rim to meet the Mavs, he doesn't feel that good. Offense, it's more controlled so it's easier, you know where you are moving. Defense is read and react, so if his knees hurt, it's hard.

Honestly i think he's a lot more hurt than people think and just fights through it better than most.
