CLEVELAND -- According to a league source, LeBron James will be named the NBA Most Valuable Player this afternoon.
James has chosen to have the announcement at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. All his Cavs teammates are expected to be there as well as representatives from Kia, which will give him a new car as part of the honor.

He will be the first Cav to win the honor in history and the second youngest ever to win the award behind Wes Unseld in 1969. James averaged 28.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 7.6 assists this season, his sixth in the NBA.
Two weeks ago James finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting and an upgrade in that area this season plus the Cavs franchise-record 66 wins were compeling to the 123 media voters. The award will be officially announced later today and he will be honored before the Cavs play the Hawks in Game 1 on the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Tuesday. Traditionally, NBA Commissioner David Stern is on hand to present the Maurice Podoloff Trophy in front the fans.

Having the honor given to him in the gym at SVSM was James' personal choice. It is a special place for him. His retired No. 23 jersey is on the wall and three state championship banners he won with the Fighting Irish hang in the rafters. When he made the announcement he was turning pro it was in the gym and he's had many photo shoots and filmed many commercials there as well. His first Sports Illustrated cover was shot there and he recently filmed a "60 Minutes" interview there. Still a resident of Akron, it is another sign of how loyal James is to his Akron roots.

As expected, but still very well deserved. :applause:

I've been watching basketball since 73'. (I was 6 years old). Really started to comprehend the game in 77'. have seen the entire careers of guys like Moses Malone, Magic, Bird, Hakeem, Jordan etc.

With that said Lebron is one of the most deserving candidates in the history of the game.

I am a Witness

You weren't around for Kobe or KG?

neither were asked to immediately become the best player on their teams, thats the difference. the hype has been way bigger for lebron than those 2

Valliant13
05-04-2009, 10:49 AM
You weren't around for Kobe or KG?

Kobe didn't really start getting that level of hype until a few seasons in. Hell, he was barely drafted in the Lottery (13th overall), and didn't even play that much his first year.

KG was superhyped, but until he went to Boston he had so little playoff success he seemed somewhat of a disappointment (in terms of all time greatness).

Lebron has lived up to the massive expectations of greatness from year one.

He said "he was barely drafted in the Lottery" (1-14, Kobe was #13).

Actually back that there were 29 teams in the league and 13 lottery picks [the Bobcats were added in 2004-05 to replace the Hornets]. Kobe was the last pick in the lottery in 96 and actually made us [Charlotte Hornets] deal him to LA for Vlade Divac. If Kobe never demanded that trade the Hornets would still be in Charlotte.

He Deserved it, and He almost won his first MVP back in the 2005-06 NBA Season. ( 2nd in MVP Voting.)

He had a dominating statsline, led his team to the best record in the NBA, best winning record at home, 4th Highest Per in NBA History, and he's also 2nd in the Defensive Player of the Year Voting.

But the Cavaliers Main Goal this season is to win the NBA Championship. Kudos to LeBron, and he's going to win more MVP Awards in the near future.

NBA needs to change the rules back to what they were. Offensive players have far too much of an advantage. A guy like Bron you cant guard but in todays game its impossible for the most part. Change the rules back and he doesnt win MVP. Wade does.

It's hard to say because the Cavs are not exactly built Spurs-style where they're going to be great for the next decade. And the teams he is supposedly considering going to in 2010 aren't very good either. So he could win somewhere between 1 to 7 more MVP awards depending on the circumstances.

Yet he didnt say that in this speech. Uh huh

I find it hard to believe that he's going to go somewhere else for a smaller salary, when he already has a shot at winning the championship with the Cavs. Oh yeah, and he built that giant house in Akron to collect dust, too.

Congrats LeBron!!!! Well deserved. Turthfully could have only gone to King James this season. :applause:

However, I thought it was funny how 'loyal' they made him to be to Akron/Cleveland. I know he grew up there and SVSM was his place of establishing his legacy. However, when you GO OUT of your way to rep the Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, speak bout your childhood as a Chicago Bulls fan, loyalty is questioned w/ me. That always bothered me, esp when Cleveland has always had pro teams in football, baseball, and basketball. /rant

Anyhow, congrats King James. I love that you are a worthy rival to the NBA and to my Lakers for the ball this season perhaps.

If Lebron doesn't win this year, it will be a pretty big chokejob. He's got the best team, home court, the best team defense, an all-star and the best combination of shooters in the league. Cavs are easily the favorite, it would take a Nowitzki-esque choke from Lebron for them to lose.

Only LeBron knows what he's going to do. I'm just pointing certain things out, reasons why I believe he will stay. Sure, he could sell his gigantic house, pack up his things and leave the Cavs forever. But it seems like he's too in love with Akron to ever leave the area.

Anyway, congratulations LeBron! Now break the curse!

:oldlol: at Lakers winning 55 without Kobe. Who is going to score on the perimeter for them? Who is creating shots for Pau, Fisher, Ariza, Vujacic and the rest of the bench? There is a reason all the guys that come to LA shot 5-10% higher.

I've seen the Lakers play once without Kobe this season, when he fouled out against the Bobcats and I've never seen a team unravel that quickly. It was painful to see how awful Pau and Bynum were when the help defender could help on them instead of keeping an eye on Kobe. IMO the team wins 35-40 wins in the West.

Have you watched the Lakers? They're probably the only team with that many players on offense with the ability to create. Odom, Pau, Fisher...None of them need help creating shots. And they can create shots for their teammates. I've seen on several occasions where the Lakers built/extended leads while Kobe was on the bench. Phil's brilliant triangle helps Kobe more than it does the other players because it gives him room to operate without the defense being able to focus in on him. If you want to see the real Kobe without all this help (even though he did have a lot of help anyway at the time), look no further than '04-'05. That's the real Kobe. 34 wins.

Odom is too inconsistent and Pau has always been the type of player who is going to be unable to take over games. The Cleveland Cavaliers star won what some expected to be a close vote in a slam dunk. He received 109 of a possible 121 first-place votes to easily outdistance Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. James totaled 1,172 points in balloting by media members in the U.S. and Canada.

Bryant, last year's winner, got two first-place votes and finished with 698 points. Miami guard Dwyane Wade was third with 680 points and was named first on seven ballots. Orlando center Dwight Howard (328) was fourth followed by New Orleans guard Chris Paul (192).

So basically, a landslide.

I hate LeBron..congrats, but the real prize is not the regular season MVP, but the Finals MVP.

So in ahead of time, congratz Kobe :D
I'd concentrate on getting out of the 2nd round before we talk about your boy winning finals MVP. Heck even if he gets out of the 2nd then I think it will be next to impossible for him to win the FMVP on the losing team. Big props if he does though because he would only be the 2nd to do it.
