Rockets center Yao Ming has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2009 NBA Playoffs after further diagnostic procedures conducted today revealed a small hairline fracture in his left foot. The finding is in addition to the earlier diagnosis of a left ankle sprain that he sustained during Friday night’s 108-94 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals playoff series. While no surgery is needed, the expected recovery timeline is between eight to 12 weeks.

From a sprained ankle?

I'm a Lakers fan but this makes me sad. The guy works so hard and plays with a ton of heart but his body fails him.

He did play an extraordinary amount of games for him as he was also in the Olympics too.

They just mentioned it in the Cavs-Hawks broadcast, the injury is a hairline fracture, not a sprain, and he's out for the rest of the playoff. Laker take it in 5.

Very sad news. Hopefully he makes a full recovery and comes back strong next season.

I am going to chalk this injury up to bad Karma from the Blazer/Rocket series where iTruWarrior (#1 Yao nut hugger) was wishing bodily injury on Oden.

Yao should just retire, there's no point doing this every year. Him being able to walk for the rest of his life is more important than ball, and it's really starting to screw over the Rockets at this point as well.

He mentioned before he might retire at Age 30.

But hes such a big guy that these injuries are usually devastating considering his feet support his huge 7'6 frame.

I actually think it is a pretty decent idea. Yao is simply too big. People as tall as him usually can't even walk. Yao having become the player he has is a once in a lifetime thing. (Not only in his lifetime, but in ours as well.)

I would think about retiring if I was him. Maybe not now but I wouldn't play after 30 if I were him.

Who do the Rockets turn to now with Mutombo and now Yao injured? Landry? Hayes? The Rockets are in trouble. With no legit 7 footers left on the Rockets, Phil Jackson should start to play Bynum a little more. He needs to gain some confidence going into the conference finals and this is the perfect time to do so.

Hes been suffering from problems over the last few years though. Hes playing far too many minutes at this point for someone his size. I truely believe if they can get a legitimate backup center, and a few big bodies, then they can add to his years. Hes expected to do WAY too much with his body.

It has to be a hard situation to handle at this point. How do you pick up a valuable big to take some of the load off Yao without trading away valuable pieces? Yet, how do you keep riding Yao, when he obviously cannot keep up the effort on his own body?

They have some things to consider in the offseason.

Yao's been playing year round for his entire NBA career. Not allowing your body to rest and recover will take its toll on you. China never has allowed him any type of break. Right after the playoffs, he flies over to China and must start playing ball for them. He needs an entire summer to get off his feet and not play ball. Let those big legs heal. I can't be certain, but I do recall reading somewhere where it said he was looking forward to this summer bc he could rest and not play ball. Not sure on that one though.

I think he thinks a hairline fracture is a bad haircut.
I've had a stress fracture before, and been able to play basketball on it for weeks, before actually finding out what it was, it is painful, but you can certainly play through it, in fact the pain decreases once you've warmed up, and although it'll hurt a lot after the game, there's plenty of painkillers he could be given.

I'm pissed how this team get injured every goddamn time. I really believe a healthy rockets team with Yao and t-mac could beat the Lakers easily

Bad news...we can only wonder how much longer Yao can take all these injuries.

Uh, wouldn't continually playing on a stress fracture for weeks just endanger yourself of getting an even more serious fracture later on? I think that's what the Rockets are trying to avoid Yao getting, to give his all out against the Lakers only to injure himself next season.

are you a 7'5, 300 pound mant with a multi-million dollar contract who would like to continue his career and not end it in this series ?

Well it could get worse, but if it did they could sit him down then and he'd still be ready to go by next season. It's the type of thing that gets progressively worse, but isn't suddenly going to turn into an ultra serious injury.

This is terrible for Yao, who is a great player and person.

I can't help but think that the Lakers got the easy road though. Yao gave EVERYTHING to the Portland series, which made an easy second round for LA, especially after this.

I called it at the beginning of the playoffs. Against Portland, either the Rockets wouldn't advance, or Yao would break down the round after. He was a ****ing warrior against Oden and Przybilla.

They weren't beating the Lakers with or without him but i really feel bad for Yao, the guy has worked so hard only to get injured time and time again

As a basketball fan, this is sad to see a star leave on either team. This series was already in the Laker's favor. Now, it is not looking bright for the Houston Rockets.:ohwell:

The rockets have such awful luck with injuries, they have barely had the chance to really shine this year. I hope Yao AND T-MAC can make a full recovery for next season.

Well, it's usually one season ending injury a season, but this season it was T-mac first, then Mutombo's career and now Yao. Honest the basketball Gods most be pretty ****ing pissed at the Rockets, because this is getting ridiculous. :banghead: There's only so much you can take and still have hope.

I feel so bad for Yao, to finally stay healthy for the season and make the second round, only to lose it all to that same left foot. I can see it in his face in the game right now, Rockets are playing great, and he just can't seem to crack a smile.

I'm not even that unset about this, because I've seen it too often before, I just feel sorry for the players. Yao, McGrady and the whole team, they have all seen this too often as well, and it really is mentally tiring. We just can't seem to make it out of a season without some kind of major injury.

Point #1: This is why Yao Ming is not the best center in the NBA. Durability is a major factor in being the best. Dwight and Duncan almost never seem to be injured, while Yao seems to go down during or just before every single post-season. Leaving alone the fact that he probably isn`t the best center even when healthy, his persistent injuries basically disqualify him from contention against legitimate iron men like Howard and Duncan (who also happen to be better rebounders, defenders, and shot-blockers).

Point #2: There is no way the Rockets can win another game on the Lakers' home court without Yao. This series was over as soon as Yao got that tiny fracture. The Rockets may still take it to 7 games, but it would take a straight up choke job by the Lakers to lose game 7 at Staples with no Yao involved. Although they certainly took the first step by laying down against the Rockets last night.

Point #3: Despite my belief that Yao can not be considered the best center in the NBA, he is undeniably one of the best centers outside the top 2 or 3 in spite of his injury-proneness, and a very smart and skilled freak-of-nature basketball player, and I wish that he could stop being injured for the playoffs. I really like him as a player, he is incredibly skilled for his size and has a lot of heart, so I really would like him to stay healthy for the playoffs. And I think the key to that is playing him much less minutes during the regular season, and for that to happen the Rockets need to get an actual backup center. I mean they have 42 year-old career-ended Dike, 6'7 Carl Landry, 6'6 Chuck Hayes, 6'8 never-used Brian Cook and 6'7 never-used Joey Dorsey. They need a legit 6'10+ backup center who can give Yao up to 20 minutes of rest a night and still allow them to win games.

Almost everybody is even hating on the Lakers even more, because Yao is out, but they still don't think about Artest and Battier.

People need to understand without yao, we become a better defensive team. we run more traps, teams cant run the pick&roll due to yao being so slow, we become better at off the ball and on the ball movement. our offense generates from our defense. so what we are doing now is playing counter attack ball. we harrass teams with either tap defense or press defense and cause TO's and push the ball all the way to the other end to offense.

By Chance can you tell me the final score too, I wanna win big in Vegas and you seem to be able to predict the future and all.

Oh, and giving me the Texas Lottery Numbers for Tomorrow would great too, I'll cut you 15%

Thanks Buddy!

This is all about probability. Lottery numbers are not predictable because odds is too small to get the exact number. But Rockets front court is undersized, that's a fact, sooner or later they'd be exposed for that. This is predictable. Kobe scored 15 points last game, but the odds that is very small too, so it's also predictable that he'll score more than 15 in tonight's game.

Whether I agree or dis-agree, whether you are right or wrong, Good Post.

I just wanted an explanation.

I agree, Not having a big guy will catch up to the Rockets and odds are it will happen against LA, and odds are it will happen tonight in Game 5.

I'll Give you all That
