On that one I probably should have made it longer. He clearly meant to do it in advance. He went to pick him up a second earlier but they fumbled the ball. he kept his hands on his waist then let go as he gathered the ball then put them back and lifted him. He had time to think about it.

Was it caught by the refs or did they get away with it?

That play has always reminded me so much of the famous Dr. J reverse from the '80 Finals. If you look at the MJ play full screen, you can see that the defender (Todd Day, iirc) actually slaps either the ball or MJ's arm (I forget which) and gets a piece of it, but MJ's grip is strong enough to maintain control of the ball, with one hand. Sick.

vs. Knicks in '84. He was 34 when he did this (also was in a slam dunk contest and jumped from free throw line that year). I don't know how anyone can retain this much athleticism into their mid 30s. Makes no sense. Did anyone get more extension on these poster dunks than Dr. J? Vince is the only one I can think of.

Dr. J also had a knee injury or surgery in his late 20's iirc. Amazing that he could still sky like that at an advanced age. Look at how he barely flexes his knees before launching into the air off the short hop step. Reminds me of MJ in that regard in that both of them could get serious air without really flexing their knees and bending/winding up for the jump. If you watch guys like VC and Nique, they flex their knees way more. I think it has to do with fast twitch muscles. An example of the lack of knee bend from MJ:

 Holy shit! Somehow I haven't seen that one before. That was nasty.

Yeah, Dr. J, along with Jordan and Drexler, retained their athleticism into their mid 30s. I don't think I ever saw post-baseball or Rockets Drexler do something like that, though.

That was a Colombian goalkeeper. Guy would run up the field to try to score a goal whenever he got the ball and leave the net completely unprotected. Ended up costing his team in the world cup when someone stole the ball from him. Riskiest/craziest player ever.

In the MJ books I've read, they often mention him playing with tendinitis. The more well known cases are the 91-92 season and the 95-96 season. About 91-92 I only recently discovered while reading The Jordan Rules, where MJ apparently played with severe tendinitis the first couple of months of the season. I've always thought he looked visibly more explosive during the latter half of that season than the first half, and I finally know why.

Jordan actually had tendinitis several tiems in his career, including during the '90 and '91 playoffs and during the second three-peat. You can hear them talk about it during various games. He also had played through numerous sprained ankles, illnesses/flu, puss-filled toes due to infections, as well as broken fingers/knuckles, ribs etc.

I list sprained ankles only because it's just as bad as tendinitis (except for severe tendinitis).

Seems like the ref would have to do something like the NFLs almost never used "Palpably unfair act" rule where the ref can decide that something just isnt right and not count the shot een though no rule exists to prevent it. Or call a tech like Walton got for throwing his shoe at a shot trying t oblock it. They called him for a tech for violating the spirit of the game.

[QUOTE=Rolando]Watched this game live. Right at the peak of Ben Wallace's athletic prime (01-02). That play occurred late in the fourth quarter of a very tight game (2:25 left, Toronto down by 2).

When I saw Vince takeoff and Ben meeting him 8 feet away from the hoop, I was like, "Welp, that's going to be a tough layup to finish." But that feller kept going up. Unbelievable to watch. My memory always recalls VC shifting his arm drastically around Wallace, but it's relatively subtle on tape. Still amazing.

Yup, spot on. The other angle from underneath the basket shows how he maneuvered his arm to avoid the block and just glide by Wallace. It was an amazing dunk at the time, because of the dunk itself and also the moment in the game.
