Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, OH
TNT

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) -- Mike Malone has always followed his father Brendan's advice. A respectful son, he still calls his dad regularly for guidance on life and hoops.

Those conversations are on hold.

"Now that it's us against them," Mike Malone said with a smile, "I don't plan on talking to him for a little while."

Papa Malone won't be dialing his son's number either.

"We'll probably see each other on the court, and that's it," Brendan Malone said.

There's a family subplot to this season's Eastern Conference final between Cleveland and Orlando. The Malone family is divided. Mike, tracing his father's coaching footsteps, is in his fourth season as an assistant with the Cavaliers while Brendan, Cleveland's interim coach for 18 games at the end of LeBron James' second pro season, is on Stan Van Gundy's staff in Orlando.

With the best-of-seven series set to open on Wednesday night, the younger Malone made an obvious prediction on the outcome.

"There will be a Malone in the NBA finals," he said.

May the best Malone win.

After sitting around for the second time in these playoffs, the series-sweeping Cavaliers, who broomed Detroit and Atlanta into early summer vacations, are expecting a much stiffer challenge from the Magic. Orlando won both of their matchups at home against Cleveland during the regular season, including a 116-87 thrashing on April 3 -- the Cavaliers' worst loss in 90 games.

Cleveland has lost just once since that mauling by the Magic, and that setback came in overtime in the April 15 season finale against Philadelphia, a game James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mo Williams sat out to get extra rest for the playoffs.

Cavs win, but it will be close. LeBron had to score over 40 to beat the Magic in Cleveland last time. I think the Cavs will win the game and the series in 6.

Not so bold prediction: Lebron comes back to Earth after playing laughable competition in the first two rounds.

I predict something like 9-22, 25 points, 11 rebounds 7 asssits.

Sounds about right. Turk's not a great defender, but he's strong enough to avoid being abused too bad, and Dwight's as good a help defender as there is. If Lebron has another 35 10 and 12 type of game, Orlando will be lucky to make it to game five, but if he puts up numbers that are closer to, say, Paul Pierce or Dirk, all bets are off for the series.

If he's coming back down to earth (or struggling), expect him to have 5-6 turnovers too.

Also not so bold prediction, Dwight Howard will get more rebounds than points in tonight's game... Of course this may backfire if the Cavs end up locking Orlando's three point shooters and playing single coverage on Dwight.

Make your post worth reading, share thoughts and analysis, even if it's just a sentenec or two! Not just a prediction by itself

Having Hedo and Lewis on the floor at the same time is counter productive. They are the same player. They need to take out one and put a quicker player in. They could use a quick shooting guard. Lee should be on the floor with either one of those guys, but not both.

Jesus, Big Z is trash defensively. Yao is probably slower than him, yet Yao guards Dwight the best.

Very good point. With both of them it makes it too hard to spread the shots around properly.

Love how this game is going so far, Cavs offense is flowing and the D is in full effect. Lebron will get his scoring going later on anyway, that's not a concern.

oh the horror
05-20-2009, 09:04 PM
This is why orlando is going to lose this series.

You have Howard with an obvious advantage, but they'll not pass him the ball ....instead, they'll run around and chuck a ton of jumpshots/three pointers, and not convert any of them.

Essentially, watch Orlando shoot themselves clean out of this game.

But they are both slow and can't get to the rim very fast. Both are true small forwards. Lee is a quick guard that can make the Cavs make a decision.

Watch the Magic play better with Lee in the game.

Overreacting after one quarter is not wise, just ask notasucka.

My opinion is not based on one quarter. I felt liek this could be a sweep before it started, now I'm just that much more convinced. IMO, the only team that can f@ck with the Cavs is the Lakers, and they need to beat the Nuggs first.

Cavs look good so far, LeBron looks good, getting everyone involved, scoring is a B+ so far. Ben Wallace can't defend Dwight. At least so far. This is definitely encouraging for those of us who are pulling for LeBron/the Cavs to win a championship this year. Still early in the game though. The Magic go on hot streaks and can close the gap quick if the Cavs don't close out on the perimeter shooters properly.
