North Korea conducts nuclear test: report
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea conducted a nuclear test on Monday, South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted a ruling party official as saying.
YTN Television quoted the South Korean weather agency as saying it detected a tremor indicating a test at 0054 GMT (8:54 p.m. EDT).
South Korean President Lee Myung-bak had called an emergency meeting of cabinet ministers over the test, Yonhap said.
North Korea had recently said it would again test a nuclear device -- its first was in October 2006 -- in reaction to tightened international sanctions after it fired a long-range rocket in April.
Hmmm...
I'm not sure what to think about this,... but I know this can't be good.

North Korea says U.S. hostile, readies more rockets
SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea, defiant in the face of international condemnation of its latest nuclear test, on Tuesday accused the United States of hostile intent and was reportedly ready to test-fire more short-range missiles.
In a move certain to add to tension in the region, South Korea said it would join a U.S.-led initiative to intercept ships suspected of carrying weapons of mass destruction, something Pyongyang has warned it would consider a declaration of war.
Monday's nuclear test, the North's second after one in 2006, drew sharp rebuke from regional powers, and President Barack Obama called Pyongyang's atomic arms program a threat to international security.
Underlining concerns over how far the North might be prepared to raise the stakes, Obama assured South Korean President Lee Myung-bak of Washington's unequivocal commitment to his country's defense on the long-divided peninsula where some two million troops face off.
There is little more Washington can do to deter the ostracized state, punished for years by international sanctions and so poor it relies on aid to feed its 23 million people.
Analysts say the latest military grandstanding is also aimed at bolstering leader Kim Jong-il's steel grip on power at home so he can better engineer his succession -- with many speculating he wants his third son to take over.
The U.N. Security Council condemned the test and is working on a new resolution, but analysts say North Korea's giant neighbor China is unlikely to support anything tough.
For China, the more immediate risk may be serious rupture inside the impoverished state, which could spark a flood of North Korean refugees across its border.
Beijing is also believed to want to bring Pyongyang back to talks with regional powers to make it give up ambitions to be a nuclear weapons power in return for massive aid and an end to its years as a pariah state.
But analysts say North Korea, which now spurns those talks, looks set on wanting a place at the table of nuclear-armed states and the leverage that will provide with Washington.
Brushing aside the latest international condemnation, Pyongyang said the United States was the aggressive one, its long-held argument to justify having a nuclear arsenal.
"The U.S. would be well advised to halt at once its dangerous military moves against the DPRK (North Korea) if it wants to escape the lot of a tiger moth, bearing deep in mind that any attempt to make a pre-emptive attack on the DPRK is little short of inviting a disaster itself."
The North also fired off three short-range missiles from its east coast missiles bases on Monday.
The Yonhap news agency quoted an unnamed South Korean official as saying it was likely to launch more, this time from its west coast, either on Tuesday of Wednesday.

Like I said... it was Monday in North Korea.
"We were pre-notified by the United States that the North will conduct a nuclear test," Won Sei Hoon, director of the National Intelligence Service, was quoted as telling a parliamentary intelligence committee.
But the U.S. did know in advance.

this is vintage NK.
everytime they need a handout (food, money, medical aid etc...) they do something like this to attract attention.
it is like the boy who cried wolf, but in this case nuclear destruction is such a big bad wolf that they need to be taken seriously.
this is their only recourse to survival, they know if they act upon their 'nuclear ambitions' they will get squashed like a bug and no one will give them anymore handouts.
its al about the handouts, they make no money otherwise.
the real fear is that they sell on of these nukes they test to some crazy Muslim who is looking for his 69 virgins in heaven.

In the past the DPRK has done this kind of thing (missile test over Japan, nuclear test) to get attention in Washington when they think they slip too far down the agenda of senior political figures. I should think this is the same. Pyongyang realizes that Obama has too many other things on his plate to engage with them so this is saying to him "Hello, over here" in language he can't ignore.
NK already has been slapped with very severe sanctions, yet they simply ignore them. Cutting off all flows, that is up to China and the Chinese at the moment are rather pleased with keeping their rivals all around them caught in a sort of limbo.
A scarier thought NK has an even bigger stockpile of chemical and biological weapon that can reach South Korea and Japan.

China is an ally against North Korea in the long run. Russia is an ally on paper but they have bigger interests on that side of the world than to be our friends. There is no way you're going to see us versus either one of them. Besides, we would come out victorious no matter what.

because the UN has deemed that they aren't responsible enough...
I f*ckin hate this stupid ass arguement...no offense but it pisses me off...
"the U.S. has nukes, why shouldn't crazy loon dictator Kim Jung Ill have them???...It is only fair!!!"
take that LAME arguement somewhere else...
so sense the U.S. has nukes that means we should allow every little peice of sh*t country with a nut case for a dictator have them???
why stop there???
we should just allow individuals have them as well...since the U.S. has nukes then it would be unfair to not allow Osama to have a few of them!!!....why not???...what the hell could go wrong???
now that I think about it...let's just f*ckin sell nukes at Walmart...since the U.S. has them everyone should be able to own them...

because they are comunist? good luck. theres not alot that can be done about it, i guarantee the u.s will never ever go to war with north korea, it wont happen, there will be lots of huffing and hoing from the u.n and it will be forgotten. best stick to soft targets like iraq.

Yep.
North Korea warned of a military response after South Korea joined an anti-proliferation exercise, and said it is no longer bound by the 1953 armistice which ended their war.
A military statement quoted by official media also said the North could no longer guarantee the safety of shipping off its west coast.
It repeated Pyongyang's position that Seoul's decision to join the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) is tantamount to a declaration of war.
http://www.defencetalk.com/nkorea-warns-of-possible-military-strike-19222/
Well the article is a little misleading because the North and South are technically still at war. They only signed the 1953 as a cease fire agreement. the war has not ended.
And is you read up on history North and South Korea have been playing this game for a while now.
ie. Right after the Axe Murder Incident, ROK sent teams to assault and crash NK guarding posts near JSA "Operation Paul Bunyan". ROK does not *** around and pays the North everything back until the south got a new president, and now we get UN resolutions that don't do crap and just buys off to shut up dear Leader for a few months until he gets bored again
No need to panic just yet. this will be just blah blah blah, UN resolutions, harsh words, free aid blah blah blah. Noth Korea just extorting money.

Call me nuts, but I don't think Kim Il Jong is as dangerous as he is loon. There's probably crazier mother****ers serving as head puppets. It's just whoever replaces him and his generals/staff/etc when he's gone that determines the future of N. and S. Korea.
