To help me get started, post who you say the top 5-7 players are at each position in the NBA, for the 2009-10 season.

Again, make it for next season. So, if a guy showed his age slightly this season, assume he'll be slightly worse next year.

And, think offense and defense. And remember, defense isn't just shot-blocks or steals, it's a lot more than that.

And, consider whether a guy helps make others better, or is really just a scorer who isn't too good at anything else. Etc.

Aim for at least 5 at each position, and if you feel like going as high as 10, or even higher, go for it.

And, if you feel like it, add an insightful comment about some or all of the players next to their name.

Just to get started, not official:

Pretty much. Wade is the better Finals performer though. I hate it when people do nothing but look at the stats and never use any logic to determine why they have those stats.

It's no different than Kobe averaging 35 PPG in the 05-06 and 06-07 seasons. Kobe was on a garbage team, stuff like that will happen when you are on a garbage team.

Lamar Odom not being on the top 5 list isn't that big of a deal. But there have been around 10 posters not put Dirk on the top 5 PF spot.

The hatred of him runs deep on this board. There is no excuse to not put him in the top 5 considering 4 out of the last 5 years he has been first team all-nba.

Or people putting freakin' Pau Gasol in front of him.

It's amazing how people conveniently forget that Gasol plays with Kobe, thus making his job on the court easier.

Gasol is good, but better than Dirk?

The ordering of the top 3 PFs are tough at this point. It's gotta be those 3 guys, but it really depends on how well KG plays after his injury and if Duncan drops off a bit again. Dirk had one hell of a season this year.

I picked Okur at #5 assuming he stays with the Jazz and Boozer leaves.

Also, the underrating of Granger amazes me. I'm completely clueless as to how he's not in everyone's top 5 for SF. Mind boggling.

Yeah, as much as I didn't want to, I had to put Gasol ahead of Garnett and Duncan. Mainly because you never know with knee injuries at that Garnett's age, and Duncan has been slowly declining.

And the absolute disrespect of Dirk is astounding, as shown by the large gaggle of posters who didn't even put him in their top 5.

LOL at Howard being better than Duncan and Garnett.
He has passed Duncan and Garnett at this point. Those guys are about to hit the NBA wall and start declining soon if not already. The NBA wall is 34 and both those guys have alot of miles on their legs.
Dwight might have his offensive shortcomings but he is the most indimidating big man down low as well as a great defensive presence. He's the new king of the mountain when it comes to big men.

I really hope you're kidding......
Like I said, unless Howard can stop getting dominated by certain player(s), he is not that intimidating. If you count in his scoring ability, then even more so.

I'm not a Roy fan. And I could care less about the Blazers. But to say Roy can't approach Kobe is absurd. Roy is more athletic than Kobe was. And with experience, his skills can catch up as well. Kobe = Overrated.
Nah man it's clear you are a closet blazer fan or just a really big fan of Roy. I'm also not a Kobe/Lakers fan but I'm not dumb enough to think that Roy was either more athletic than Kobe in his prime (and I even doubt now he is), or that he'll ever be as good as Kobe. To say that Roy will ever be on the same level as Kobe is just stupid man, get real. Nobody thinks Roy will be that good when he's barely top 10 in the league right now

Whats wrong with Roy? All I am saying is that he will have a better year than Kobe. Is that really a reach, just one year? I am not bashing him at all, no hating. I just think that the Blazers and Roy will get better next year.

Yes it is a reach. A ridiculous and hilarious prediction that I would only expect a blazer fan to make.

You really expect to say that Brandon Roy will be the best player in the western conference next season especially after what Kobe just did, and think you won't be called out on it?

Roy will get better sure and Kobe may get worse, but Kobe's still so far ahead of Roy that it doesn't matter.

Kobe, Wade, LeBron, those guys are by far better than any others.

Let's just wait until Roy makes it past the first round before comparing him to Kobe. Or maybe wait until most people would rather have him than players like Dirk, Yao, Deron Williams, CP3, Melo.

Again, I could care less about the Blazers. Why do I have to be a fan of the team to give a player any praises? I'm an objective BASKETBALL fan. I call it how I see it. I watched Kobe his whole career. Even in his prime, he didn't blow people out of the water athletically. He wasn't anywhere near the level of Vince, T-Mac, MJ, or LeBron in terms of sheer athleticism. Brandon Roy is definitely more athletic. He doesn't show it often because that's his game. He's methodical and plays half-court basketball.
Roy also has the skills to be the premier SG of the league. I don't know why you think Kobe's this untouchable player. There's only one untouchable player ever at SG and that's Jordan.

Yeah well Vince, MJ, LeBron are basically outliers in terms of athleticism. It's dumb to say that Kobe wasn't a freak in his early years just cus he wasn't as athletic as them. And it's even dumber to say that Brandon freaking Roy will ever be the athlete or player Kobe is. I agree that Roy is an underrated athlete but he's not as explosive as Kobe. Man you probably don't watch any basketball at all to say that Roy can be better than Kobe:lol

And yeah I agree that MJ is the only untouchable player but you should realize that Kobe's second on the list of SGs. Only SG better was Jordan.

Dude, you think Brandon Roy of all people will be like a top 2 player all time at his position hahahaha.

Sorry man, I know you're a Blazer fan and all and I like many of their players too (including Roy) but this is just taking it too far. Roy's a really really good player not an all time great like Kobe. He'll never be as good.

Brandon Roy????? WTF has he accomplished????
No Rings, No Season MVP, No All-Star Game MVP, No Finals MVP, No 2nd Round, No First Team NBA Award, NO 81 point game........Is this really a conversation or a wish that he could be in Kobe's league.
Roy's career high is 52 points.....nice....Kobe had 62 in 3 quarters and sat out the entire 4th. Kobe has 25 50 point games including 4 in a row.
I like Roy's game a lot, but let him do SOMETHING before we even discuss him.

That's arguable honestly. Wade had a better year, but the thread title is not "Who had the better year at each position".

Duncan is better than Dwight at many aspects of the game as well but Dwight at this point dominates the game with his shot blocking and rebounding while scoring more on a higher % than Yao or Duncan(not saying Dwight's better offensively but due to athleticism he gets more points). Dwight easily leads the league in rebounding and blocks with nobody really challenging him for the lead while being high up in FG%(considerably higher than Duncan or Yao). Howard also had more team success than either last season.

Duncan is better than Yao statistically and he's a better defensive player and passer.

Yao and Duncan just didn't seem to dominate games the way Dwight did last season. Maybe due to injuries for both, but regardless based on what I saw last season Dwight seemed to be more dominant at this point.

why do u people keep overrating rondo?

I personally don't have him higher then 4 but after how criminally underrated he has been over the season I don't mind that a few people are going a bit overboard. People talk about how fortunate he is to play with the Big 3 but why is the fact that he creates so many east/good looks for them not talked about. Overall I think people are starting to realize that the argument of playing with 3 HOF'ers doesn't stand up to reality when you take into account what he did with Pierce/Allen/Perk(a non offensive player)/Baby and not much else for 3 months. People are realizing Boston isn't best suited to his game and despite all that and his huge flaw in his game he is still one of the better pg's in the game. At the same time it is crazy for people to put him over Billups, Parker and Deron but it is becoming more crazy for people to not have him in the top 10 or to say he would be a scrub in a different situation as many claimed over the season.

Funny what can happen in a couple playoff series.
But I aint gonna lie he was amazing in that Chicago series

he had 4 (or 3) triple doubles in the playoffs, almost averaged one in fact. Also had 3 triple doubles in one playoff series.

You are seriously putting David Lee ahead of Dirk?

**shakes head** Dirk is the Rodney Dangerfield of insidehoops....
theres really not all that valid of an argument for putting ANY pf besides maybe duncan over dirk at this point. I dont agree with it and i dont think hes a pf but i could kinda understand putting duncan above him. Aside from that it takes some serious mental gymnastics or a serious lack of a clue to rank kg, bosh, amare or gasol who have all gotten quite a few votes ahead of dirk at this point. Dirk just goes out and puts up his 25 and 9 years in and year out and generally makes at least the second round of the playoffs.

Kevin Martin has missed more games to injury than Wade in the last 2 years, so I'm not sure where you're going with this. Martin is a good scorer, but that's really his only strength, and Wade beats him out at even that, and Wade's superiority on defense makes it a laughable comparison.

To help me get started, post who you say the top 5-7 players are at each position in the NBA, for the 2009-10 season. Again, make it for next season.

The point of the excercise is to make predictions for next season, not to compare players based on past performance. If I think Kevin Martin will have a breakout season next year and Dirk Nowitzki's game will fall off a bit, that's my take. I may very well be wrong, but these kind of things are speculative and just for entertainment's sake anyway. So what is the big deal?

With Artest to the Lakers and Shaq to the Cavs it seems to me that all the best players in the NBA are getting pooled together by trades. I don't know if that is the best thing for the league across the board.
See an article about it at http://www.bteambombers.com/ .

My Point Guards
5) Steve Nash
- How could I leave out my favourite player? But sad to say he has really fallen off after the run 'n' gun style but hopefully can get his form back next season
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o57/broncs1484/nash-1.jpg
4) Chauncey Billups
- Really showed he can still preform after getting traded to the Nuggets, all he needed was a change of scenery
http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt160/pg325ac/chauncey.jpg
3) Tony Parker
- Nobody can stop this guy when he drives to the hoop already with a Finals MVP and with the new Spurs team loaded he can finally get back to his form

Why would you ask that when my user name is Truth KG Ray and my Location is Boston,MA? and even if I wasnt a Celtics fan i'd still make those my power rankings.

It was a joke :ohwell: regardless of your username not hard to tell your Celtics fan :oldlol: . You have all 5 starters for the Celtics in your top 5.

PG: Rondo ..cases can be made for players like Harris\Rose\Nash.
SG: Allen .. cases can be made for Vince Carter\Manu among others.
SF: Peirce .. Melo has a very very strong case.
PF: Garnett was injured half of last year basically so clearly cases can be made for Duncan Dirk.
C: Perk is a solid role player .. so many cases are also here.

And if your taking into account next season then it looks even worse if you look at the players individually. I guess if you take winning over anything else you'd have a case.

Seriously people, are you all just forgetting about Dirk or actively keeping him off of your lists? This guy is criminally underrated if people think Boozer is better than him.

What's so funny about that? Who in their right mind would rank Chauncey above CP3 or Deron? Nash, Parker, and others are also in the conversation around Chauncey.

Melo has never been and, barring injury, mental breakdown, or alien abduction, will never be as good as Lebron is currently. At best he's in his rightful spot at number 2.

funny how almost nobody puts Bogut in the top 5.
the bucks are 11-11, with him being a very important piece (they were 1-4 without him) and he already owned perkins, lopez, nene, noah, al jefferson, david lee and he will own Duncan when the spurs play in milwaukee like he always did

and putting harris over jennings is stupid
the nets are 2-17 (or whatever their record is) having top 5 players on the most important positions, pg and C ?
