How tall are you? And how does it affect your game?
shlver
06-08-2009, 10:24 PM
5 foot 3, depends on how tall the other team is. If they're over a foot taller than me, then I'll play like Steve Nash, but if they're around my height or a couple inches taller, I turn into Allen Iverson.

5'7 lol. I'll play PG when there are much taller players around. If not, then I'll play SG.

I'm only 5'8" myself, and I always feel concious about my height. I guess I shouldn't be though since the playground isn't the NBA. :D

5'11" it affects me because I am a scoring PG. I can score just fine at any park I play at or lower division rec leagues but when I play against pro players and college players, my role turns into Jannero Pargo
Grinder

6'6" and at the park I'll usually end up playing center. I can dunk without taking any steps so that's a big advantage on the playground. In high school I played SF.

5"11, but I lift weights a lot, so I'm usually the strongest person on the court. If I'm just playing one on one or two on two, I'll usually post up if the guy I'm playing is strong, or just try to slash from the perimeter if the guy is too weak for it to really be fair for me to post him up. If I'm playing with a lot of people, though, I tend to try to shoot from the outside or use stepback jumpers, since a tallish help defender could easily block my shot if I'm posting up in the paint.

5 feet 10 inches of basketball awesomeness!
I'm 6'3" and typically end up playing center even though I'm more of a SG or SF. I need taller friends :). I guess it helps my game in the fact that it forces me to post up more and work on that aspect of it.

6'4 and 205~ yeah like the guy above me I usually end up playing center haha.
I suck pretty bad though, if I was any shorter I wouldn't have a chance at really doing anything, my handles are terrible, pretty much all I can do is hit jumpshots and wide open layups. I could dunk for a little while (usually the ball would fall out of my weak hands) but I got kind of bored with working out and lost a few inches on my vertical.
Defensively and with rebounding and passing I'm good though. My instincts are good, like I know what would be GOOD to do in a situation I just usually am incapable of doing anything other than wide open layups and jumpshots. So yeah with the almost complete lack of skills that I have height is very very important for me because big parts of my "game" are rebounding and defense.
With all of that said, I'm way better than anybody I play with ( computer nerds ) once in a while somebody that's actually good will come and beat us pretty bad with actual dribbles, that's always pretty fun! My athleticism and height are really wasted on me, I apologize to any short ballers for wasting my body type :(

6'0". I usually play PG at the park because my handles are good and I am good at slashing into the lane and finishing a layup or finding an open teamate. Back in high school I was the tallest player on my team, so I had to play center.

usually a point forward- kind of player, but i'll play down low when I play with shorter friends and guard with bigger buddies

i always end up playing center but i don't play like a center should. For me my friends arnt all that tall. So just to make it a little bit more fair and even ill usually settle for 15 -18 jumpers. Lotta people tell me i should be more of a low post player but i dont exactly have the strength to back some one down quite as easily. Ive got decent enough handles and good enough crossover and ability to create my own shoot to play more of a small forward

511 and 205lbs, but at the park I play C or PF, mainly cause where I play 90% of the people there are Chinese, and also because I have a fair bit of weight relative to my height. I used to be well over 220 lbs.
In my local league games I shift a little bit more to a SF role.

I'm 5'9.5 but still growing. I usually play PF/C, although I'm a bit lanky, I can play average to good defense on man and post. People overlook me though and think I can't be a playmaker, mainly because my handles aren't those overly elaborate ones of the likes of Chris Paul or AI or so, but I can dribble better than some of those guys that are supposed to play point or a guard spot in my village. I have a mean jumper, a bit inconsistent beyond the perimeter though, and I have pretty good hops for a dude my age and height.

Im 5'9 and almost unstoppable one on one. Kobe like moves and superb midrange game, though just above average athleticism, but fast. But my perimeter range isnt constant. FT % is about 80%.
Good passing skills, but might overlook the passing man when trying to go one on one. Overall, defensive skills are above average. Good timing on blocks. Has speed to keep up with even the quickest players. However, tend to bite on fakes and could be post up easily by larger players.

6' - 175lbs and am usually the all purpose player for my teams. I play the center on D, I post up on the block like a PF, I can have the offense revolve through me in the high post (automatic midrange). I consider myself a scorer in a sense that I'll pull threes when it's really necessary, other than that I will never roam beyond the arc; my 3ball is OK. I can break and run the floor with the best of them. With the perfect angle and clear path to the rim I can 1 legged bang it hard.
Oh, I play mostly in asian/filipino leagues unless it was college intramurals so being 6' makes me a legit 3, undersized 4-5.

Anything is possible of course but realistically that chance is pretty small.
Especially your dad only being 5'9'', that's really not working with much. Do you have any tall aunts, uncles, cousins or grandparents?

Nah, we are just representative of the average population. Your not very short, but slightly below average in height. 5,3" or under is very short for either sexes though, imo.
btw, I saw a 4,10" girl at summer school today. She was so short that she didn't even come up my shoulders as walked by her (and I am only 5,9 ish). By comparison, I felt like a giant (like the photoshopped pic of me)! Actually, she's probably not even 4,10", but I found her very cute. By legal standards, that's midget height.
However, she was well proportioned despite her diminutive stature. She was only a scaled down version of an average sized teen unlike dwarves.

The girl I saw at summer school today was white (and she's probably at least grade 10 given the class she walked out of). She's towered over by already short girls (who are only 5,3"). She's probably only 4,8-4,9" which is unusually short (and why she got my attention). She still has some room to grow, but if she doesn't, then she'll just end up as a pituitary-challenged individual

How tall are you? And how does it affect your game?
Now that I think about it, height should not affect your game or what you choose to work on in anyway. You should still perfect your footwork, ballhandling, jumpshot, driving and finishing, defense and agility. Unless you are really set on being good at just one aspect, it should not affect your game at all. Granted in game situation if you are the tallest guy out there you should be playing like it, and if you are the shortest out there you should be taking advantage of your quickness and peskiness over the bigger guys

I am 6'3''. I like this height because (ideally) it provides me with the speed and agility of a guard while still being tall enough to venture into the paint at will without fear of being vanquished.
Automajic raises a good point as well. I encourage all my players to never limit themselves due to their height or size. My thought process is this, if a kid is taller than all his classmates throughout school, there's a chance he may just stop growing and bam ~ the kid that only developed his post game (because he was "tall") through his early high school life is now 5'10'' with no guard skills.
Conversely, if a tall kid works on all of his game (ballhandling, shooting, etc) and continues to grow throughout schooling, then there is the potential he'll turn into a 6'6'' player with guard skills - a nasty combination.
I see no reason to limit skills or believe that you are pigeonholed based on one's height or build.

6'4" barefoot so 6'5" was my most common listed height but occasionally I got listed at 6'6"; yeah, 6'6" was a stretch, but I never had anything to do with being listed at that height and my basketball shoes I was usually 6'5.5" anyway. In high school my primary position was SF with SG as my secondary position but I also played some PF. I was/am a coach's son so I was learning the correct way to shoot from a really young age and that was always my biggest strength. I wasn't ever very athletic, though. I could dunk in high school but didn't have the hops to do anything special other than a boring, regular one hand or two hand flush. My relatively average athleticism caused me some problems when defending perimeter players, but I have a 6'8" wingspan so I was able to use that to negate some of my athletic deficiencies.

5'8.5''-5'9''. Was only 5'6'' entering senior year of high school and randomly had a 3 inch growth spurt sometime between early October to mid November. I only noticed it when someone else told me I look at least 2-3 inches taller... I think it was some random college freshman who came back to visit one weekend. Ended up going home and measuring my height and noticed I grew 2.5-3 inches. I had a massive growth spurt from like 5'0'' to 5'6''. My parents are both within that height so I thought I was done growing.
Older brother grew to 5'10''. Was around 5'8'' at high school graduation.
