When you think of scoring, you either think of the dunk or the 3 point shot. The dunk has overtaken the layup as a "flashier" way of scoring, while the 3 point shot is getting more popular ( ala. Orlando Magic ). The layup can be considered something of an lost art, or something not as mentioned. With that said, lets look at my favourite layups of all time.

No. 1 Dr J's Behind The Backboard

http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Third_Party_Photo/2006/05/20/1148134488_7988.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7njB1T-Xjk

In the fourth quarter of Game 4, with his Sixers trailing 2-1in the series, Julius Erving delivered perhaps the ultimate move of his highlight-filled career to help Philly to a 105-102 win. Dr. J drove baseline, elevated, reached back behind the backboard with the ball and somehow emerged on the opposite side of the basket to convert the circus shot. Magic Johnson called it "the greatest move I've ever seen in a basketball game."

No.2 Jordan Over 3 Defenders

http://neswsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/michael-jordan-mj-mj-23.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVO09i0OFy8

If I were to have a favourite layup, this would be it. Jordan actually drived passed his defender, then jumped OUTSIDE the paint about 10 foot? away from the basket, HANGED on the air with 3 defenders over him, ADJUSTED his shot about 3 times in the air because of a taller defender and actually reversed and went in. Poetry in motion.

No. 3 Jordan's Switch Hand

http://www.nba.com/media/finals2003/finals_jordan_91_grab.jpg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7vsjOHq5E0

The succinct call from Marv Albert is iconic: "Oh! A spec-tac-ular move by Michael Jordan!" The mid-air switch from right hand to left was one of 13 consecutive made field goals for Jordan (who went 15-18 for the game), as the Bulls turned a close game against the Lakers into series-tying blowout which propelled them toward their first NBA championship.

No. 4 Ray Allen's Ridiculous Reverse

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRw6-jRMvjE&feature=fvw

Game 4 of the finals and amazing concentration by Ray Allen who blew pass Kobe leaving him in dust, went up for the regular lay-in, but Gasol was there and challenged. When it looks like there really isn't anyway of the ball going in, Allen adjusted his shot for the reverse, Odom came in for the help defense, and tried to block the ball but Oopps...was a tad too slow, gravity brought him down as the ball went up, leaving Odom helplessly looking at the ball falling into the net..priceless..

No.5 Vince Carter's 360 Layups

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKwFzcnbe08

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU5k0o_lSEc&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSMwoMYaeUM&feature=fvw

Visanity besides his dunking prowess is well-known, albeit lesser, for another thing, that is his 360 layups. He makes the best 360 dunks, but he also does the best 360 layups, makes it so easy that you would think he actually practiced this shot. Each and everyone of his 360's are amazing to watch. Talk about evolving the game.

The MJ switching hands one is the most overrated ever. It was not needed, and its honestly not that difficult.

As for me, I'd take any of VC's 360's. The guy has the best body control of any player I've ever seen.

"the move"
the layup vs. Nets on 3 defenders
ball fake layup vs. 76ers (at :33 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0clvnE4isZo) - my personal favorite
360 layup during game 6 ECF in '89 vs. Pistons
several layups vs. the Jazz in the finals

You can tell by the way he talks that he is probably about 14-16 years old. He's at the age where he thinks he's gotta act all tough and cool to impress people. He probably only watched Jordan as a Wizard and even then I wouldn't be surprised if he never even saw that version of Jordan play.

Kobe's shot was way more difficult

But the only problem with Kobe's shot was that it was Mike Breen and his dead commentary that called the play

If it was Marv Albert giving the "Oh! A Spectacular Move by Kobe Bryant!!!" then it would've not just looked better but also sounded better

As much as people don't realize Marv's commentary on Jordan's move made it even more special than it already is

Agreed. Mike Breen is a joke. Dude admitted to not being enthusiastic because Jeff Van Gundy was sitting next to him and he was rooting for his brother. :oldlol:

He should be fired.

Jodan's switch hand layup vs the Lakers is the most overrated highlight play in NBA History! Iv'e seen ton's of player's do a much better layup than that one, but since his name is Michael Jordan, it get's overrated!

The Jordan Layup vs the Nets when he went between the multiple defenders was way better than that overrated unnecessary uncontested switch hand layup vs the Lakers!

Larry Bird is the clear best player in this! And he didn't even have the speed, or jumping ability these guy's have!

Lol at the Kobe vids. There's nothing he can do that any regular player can't athletically. Kobe = average athlete.

Yet where are the videos of these other players doing what Kobe does in an actual game? :confusedshrug:

Haha, the way you guys are talkin about that "overrated" Jordan move proves how good it is....it was so smooth that he actually made it look easy to ya guys. You think people in the NBA can pull stuff like that? Jump from ten feet out, hang for a split second, and then switch handson the way down and lay it up all in one smooth motion? WTF!! Few in the NBA can actually jump that high, let alone pull that off that's ridiculous:lol Pleaaaaase show me clips of other NBA players easily doing that

Kobe's spec - TAC- ular move>MJ's move.

2009: Kobe Bryant's falling, double-clutch banker over the Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard, who was all over him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMwbsQPr780&feature=channel_page

this move is ridiculously overrated.
