Feel free to throw his other work into the discussion.

Personally I tend to side with Sign O the Times. Purple Rain is probably his most popular work, but I think Sing O' The Times is the album where all of the sides of Prince's personality peacefully coexist together on the same album.

I really loved his self-titled album. He's got such a large library of releases and so many of them are great, It's hard to pick one.

Im thinking it was

'controversy'
'Lets Work'
'Annie Christian'

^those was hot songs

also I was big into Morris Day and the Time back when they made songs like 777-9311 and 'the walk'

Sign O' The Times.

It's stunning, all encompassing and without a doubt his masterpiece to me. I have it on vinyl, the only way to listen to crazy records like that.

btw.... what was on Dirty Mind?Dirty Mind, When You Were Mine, Uptown, Head, Do It All Night, Sister, Party Up, and Got A Broken Heart Again.

Controversy is great too. On some days I will take it over everything he has done.

It would have been interesting to see how good his Camille project had turned out had he gone through with it, or how good Vanity 6 would have been if he cared about putting good them being both beautiful and good singers. I think Prince may be the patron saint of getting your untalented friends record deals.

By the way, if you ever go to used record stores Prince is a must check.

If you get lucky with the store you could walk in with $20 and walk out with SotT, 1999, Controversy, Purple Rain, S/T, Dirty Mind and LoveSexy all in near mint condition.

Because somehow Prince records are one of the most inflated things on the planet. Yeah, my Prince collection was real cheap. :lol

His best is probably Sign 'O' The Times, my fav is Dirty Mind though. I also did Parade for some reason ...

Prince, while he is a great, would be so much greater if he didn't release so many albums. Since he released an album every, what every year, there was just songs scattered around that do nothin'.

kizz,

to me, prince's greatness is, in part, because hehas released so many albums. in this day and age it would have been better for his present marketability, but at the end of the day his creativity and sheer number of songs will be a major part of his legacy

artists now have difficulty putting together three decent albums

Purple Rain is easily his best album. believe me, i've listened to every album from For You to LotusFlow3r. the album contains his best vocals, guitar work, and overall songwriting of any of his albums.

he has many great songs, but every other album feels scattered and not as consistently good as Purple Rain.

here's a list of some great, generally ignored songs from him that contain great vocals and/or guitar work almost on par with PR:

Temptation - from Around the World in a Day
I'm Yours - from For You
The Question of U - from Graffiti Bridge
Joy in Repetition - from Graffiti Bridge
Positivity - from Lovesexy
Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad - from Prince
Bambi - from Prince
Lady Cab Driver - from 1999
Something in the Water - from 1999

this vid is one of the coolest things Prince has done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifp_SVrlurY

I've loved Purple Rain since I was seven years old. "The Beautiful Ones" is my favourite Prince song of all time, closely followed by "Thieves in the Temple".

This is my opinion too. Sign O the Times is his best but if I haven't listened to Prince in a while I'm going with Dirty Mind.

Purple Rain. That's his only album that isn't full of shitty filler songs. Every single other Prince album has at least 2-3 shitty filler songs that keep that album from being a great album.

Purple Rain is the only album without that much shitty filler.

This is my favorite Prince song and I think it's his best song he's written besides Purple Rain.

Dirty Mind
Sign of the times
1999
Purple Rain
Controversy

Top 5 in order
His run from 1978-1990 is the GOAT by any musician. He had lot of shit recently but even records like Musicology were great. I just listened to 1999 again recently and it could pass as a record from 2016 it's so abstract and dope

Even shit like 3121 which was mediocre but it was interesting to hear him try contemporary pop/rnb. He did a song with a modern beat and autotune and still sounded way better than almost anybody who do it

I'd even go up to Diamond & Pearls from 1991. It features Cream, the Title track, Gett Off, Money and Insatiable.

And 3121 may be mediocre by Prince standards. But it was one of the best albums of the year when it was released. He has released gems since his original WB run. Emancipation is great. The Rainbow Children is freakin phenomenal. I freakin slept on it when it originally came out in 2001. I didn't get it til like 4-5 years ago cause it was like four dollars at Best Buy. The best 4 bucks I've ever spent.

lol I guess if you don't consider the Beatles or Stones or Beach Boys or even later musicians like Radiohead...and if you just outright ignore jazz and classical music which is all significantly better than anything Prince created, then sure...it was the 'GOAT run'
