View Full Version : The Truth Behind Lebron getting dunked on Monday at Akron University

To read the Internet, it would seem winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award has dramatically thinned LeBron James' skin. That and one of the world's largest corporations apparently has to flex its muscle to protect a 6-8, 260-pound man.
In the latest James' Web controversy on Wednesday, CBSSports.com reported that Monday night at Nike's LeBron James Skills Academy at the University of Akron, officials confiscated tapes from two videographers after James had been dunked on by a college player during a pickup game.

To make it worse, the report said, James instructed Nike bosses to take the tapes as if he were Don Barzini in the famous wedding scene from "The Godfather."
It's a funny story indeed and instantly spread virally across the web and soon went into the talk-show machine. The problem is, just like earlier this week when James made headlines for something he never said to Trevor Ariza in a phone conversation, it isn't the whole story.
According to Nike and James himself, nothing of the sort happened.

Oh, he certainly got dunked on. Xavier University's Jordan Crawford slammed it right over him and probably experienced quite a surge in Google hits because of it. James has been dunked on many times in his career and it has become the career highlight of several players.

Nike said taking the tapes had nothing to do with the dunk and more to do with a violation of the media procedures of the event. The James Skills Academy brings together the top high school and college players in the country and is open to the media. After those sessions, however, there are often pickup games that James and several of his Cavs teammates take part in. The media is permitted to watch but not permitted to do interviews or film.

"Nike has been operating basketball camps for the benefit of young athletes for decades and has longstanding policies in place regarding what events are open and closed to media coverage," Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said.

"Unfortunately, for the first time in four years, two journalists did not respect our 'no videotaping' policy at an after-hours pick-up game Monday evening following the LeBron James Skills Academy."

According to Nike officials, both journalists understood the mistake and handed over their tapes without making a fuss. Neither cameraman was available for comment Wednesday night.

As for James, there was no shame. He takes pride in getting to know young up-and-coming players and taking them on the floor. James is not in top form. He took a month off following a five-hour surgery to remove a growth from his jaw last month and then spent three weeks taking care of business and getting some vacation time in Washington, New York, the South of France, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

It was the first significant break James has had from basketball since 2005, after playing for Team USA for each of the last three summers.

He only got back into the gym to do serious workouts on Monday, when the event took place. Often in the pickup game he didn't even run the full length of the floor because he didn't have his wind after taking the time off.

Not that he's taking anything away from Crawford, who apparently threw down an impressive jam.

"Jordan Crawford is a great player, LeBron has been dunked on before, it's no big deal," said a source close to James. "It was a pickup game and it happened in competition."

James doesn't mind getting shown up every now and then either, after all last year he lost two games of HORSE to a warehouse worker in California as part of a promotion for Cub Cadet.

It's not just coincidence that the first time the reporters rebel and break the rules happens to be when Lebron gets dunked on.

This is EXACTLY why it's such a poor move to confiscate the tape, because he overreacted to a relatively mundane thing. If the only thing that happened was he got dunked on, we'd all have our ten second chuckle and quickly move on, but the fact that the tape got confiscated is what makes it sensational.

LeBron "with no regard for human life" dunking over KG in the ECF is sensational. This two-handed dunk by a player from a top 20 program in a pickup game is not. I agree about the 10-second chuckle; it's perfectly stated and true. What's sensational about the entire thing is that one human being would think LeBron would actually go over and confiscate the tape so that nobody could see it. Do you think he gives a ****? His entire life is so far beyond any of this...it's just amazing he plays so hard on every play and is the consummate team player yet faces so much hate. It's all about the ring. None of this will stop until he gets one.

Gotta love cats who defend the idea of "being dunked on" with stringent laws that no one who really plays basketball adheres to. Being dunked on is being dunked on. If your friends or other people at the court say you got jammed on, then you got jammed on. That's all that matters. But there will always be guys out there who argue **** like "but if you look at his body, he is not correctly parallel to the dunker, but instead perpendicular or at a 81.25 degree angle facing north... Therefore, it's not being dunked on." It kills me everytime I read **** like that.

If being dunked on just mean that somebody dunked close to you and you were unable to prevent it then why is there a notion of shame associated with it? It's not like you can easily prevent a dunk.

To me, being dunked on means that you were humiliated in the process. It's like a duel between two individuals. You get dunked on when your body wasn't even enough to prevent him from scoring, whether you are standing in his way or colliding with him in mid-air he just went through you, made you eat his salty nuts and you fell to the ground like a little girl.

There's a reason those kind of dunks end up on posters while others aren't worth mentioning.

So what I've gotten from this thread is that everyone in the league has been dunked on, except Kobe, because the rules are different for him.:confusedshrug:

Seriously, by the "embarrassed" definition of being dunked on, less than 10% of the league has had it happen to them. It's just not a play you see all that often. However, ask anyone real at a rec gym if a failed contest or a non contest where you got jumped over to some extent is being dunked on, and they will tell you it is. None of this "it wasn't balls to face" crap.

So if those "real" guys at the Skills Academy said it was a very nasty dunk on LeBron it must have been something epic, not just a regular dunk with LeBron standing there and looking at the guy dunking.

If that's getting dunked on then a lot of players have never been dunked on. Seriously, how many people have been dunked over on like that? Not many. That isn't the only way to get dunked on as the word ON isn't to be taken literal when applying it to term dunked on.

Who said the ON was to be taken literally? Try to read what I wrote after instead of just relying on the pictures. But if you want to know that's what you get when you type "dunked on" in google image. But maybe those people who labeled their pictures this way aren't "anybody real at rec games".

So to clarify this.. if a guy gets a rebound un traffic and dunks while 3 defenders are nearby, did he dunk on all of them?

Is being alone in the paint and dunking the only way not to dunk on somebody then?

but judging by your name I can see why you got all the hate on Kobe

The reason I say its not dunked on is because it really doesnt look like he was in a position to defend it but he was just on the side and stuck his hand up (a lot) Maybe it was the timing or angle of the picture and on the actual play you can see him getting dunked on, but in that he looks like he was to much on the side to be considered dunked on.

But that one of Dwight on top of him looked quite nice

I always felt "being dunked on" was more of a Physical play for the ball.

my definition would be.
1. Standing in front of the person dunking. ( most of the time he get tea bagged )
2. making a play for the ball and ended up fouling or having too much contact while being infront of the person.

feel to tell me ur definitions. or tell me im wrong

Why in the world should I believe LeBron and Nike when they can't provide the documentation that shows video is not allowed at that event? I'll tell you why. BECAUSE ITS A LIE.

Obviously Lebron and Nike, since they, you know, are the ones who destroyed the footage.

Nike and LeBron made a bit of a foolish move in my opinion.

Like many have said here almost everybody gets dunked on in some way, NBA, pickup game, whatever it is..

We'd have seen the video, had a good laugh for a couple of days, then it would blow over and be basically forgotten. Doesn't change anything really other than Crawford may get a few more hits on google. The fact it got removed has got us all talking about it more, and it's 'somewhat' tarnished LeBron's rep. IF he was the one asking for Nike to get the tapes off of the journalists.

I never understood the big deal with dunking on someone. You can't even touch a damn player in the air without getting a foul called on you.

What's even funnier is that people lack enough intelligence to create and then support some type of Nike/LeBron conspiracy theory. You posters think you are onto something huge with this Dunkgate ideology when reality most people with common sense are looking at you and laughing.:oldlol:

So you are telling me that Lebron getting dunked on, and Nike confiscating tapes when they haven't done this before, and it happening just when Lebron gets dunked isn't even the least bit fishy to you?

I'm not saying that this is a huge deal at all, I'm not saying that it's 100% true that they took away the tapes for the dunk, it makes sense to think that. If you don't think that it makes sense to think about it like that, then I guess I just have to disagree with you.

I am telling you that LeBron James cares 0% that he got dunked on Monday. That is a fact! Hell...he could care less if he got dunked on in the NBA Finals...unless that dunk cost him and his team the game. When/if he gets dunked on, he would simply find a way to a) not let it happen again, or b) find a way to help his team get out of the situation that dunk may have caused. It's that simple. LEBRON DOES NOT CARE THAT HE GOT DUNKED ON. It's you guys...and the media who is obsessed with him who cares. How freaking long are you guys going to talk about it?

Did you guys hear that Bill Buckner let a ball go through his legs in the '86 World Series?

I guess I should tell you that I too, am not 100%, that my summations are educated thoughts. I just know (hypothesize) that LeBron has much bigger fish to fry than dealing with a dunk in a pick up game. In fact, I am almost certain that if given the opportunity, LBJ would give this guy his due props behind closed doors with a handshake or an autograph[B] and tell him great job/good luck. It's not a big enough event to play it out in the media. I have watch LBJ since he was a very young player and have rarely seen him play the game the wrong way. Watch the little things...have you seen him run the wing on the break? It's text book. He is 1 step from the sideline...spreading out the defense...running as hard as he can EVERY SINGLE TIME. He is a team player...is coachable...plays hard...and handles himself the right way about 99% of the time, yet people wait for any tiny thing to pounce. I have an appreciation for effort and am able to get past the fact that the media has created an unforgiving jealousy by painting him to be the best of all time. Have you heard Jerry West? Magic Johnson? Oscar Robertson? There positive thoughts about LBJ the player are just so much bigger than an all of us on the forums that it is simply amazing so many negative thoughts about him could actually be posted. They will end if/when he wins a ring or if he leaves Cleveland and goes somewhere else - as long as it is to your town. I love Duncan...Jordan...Magic...Bird...I love great players. I am going to enjoy this guy while he plays and not get caught up in the all of the garbage that he refuses to deal with as well.

Hey Alpha. His mom walked out onto the damn court like she was going to get KG! Way to bring something totally irrelevant into the picture. A spoiled child would never tell his mom to sit your *** down. Everyone in the world knows she needs to be careful with that bread plate.

Hate to break it to the conspiracy theorists but Nike has only allowed taping of a "closed door" game ONCE since the LeBron Camp has started. Even then it wasn't a normal closed door game because the taping was allowed as part of LeBron documentary.

Walked onto the court? Not even close mate. The players came through the first few rows of the crowd just where Lebron's mother happened to be sitting. What his mother done was stupid, but so was what Lebron done when he shouter at her.

I think Nike probably destroyed the footage when they took it. (seriously). Thats the only reason I can come up with as to why we haven't seen the footage yet after all this hoopla.

They don't even have the footage anymore to release it. :confusedshrug:
