gang members and Cincinnati Reds hats

My coworker told me about this. I am working this summer in an inner city area. After work one day, I'm changing clothes and put on my Reds fitted cap. In no uncertain words, they tell me I ought to be careful wearing that particular hat around (they didn't know that I was driving straight home and not walking around town, but whatever). I looked this up the other day out of curiosity and saw that one particular gang wears these hats, and stiches an H right next to the white "C" to indicate that they are a "corner hustler" Also saw this website that not only talks about the Reds fitted caps, but other gang identification items worn via ballcaps and jackets:

Kinda interesting (but scary in a way)

I did know that the the fitted Reds hats were very popular in the urban culture and were also worn by Lil Wayne and The Game in music videos, but I didn't realize they were dominant in gang culture. Apparently, at Livermore High School in California, Reds hats are banned altogether.

And all this time, I thought that they were fans of Joey Votto.

2. RAIDER JACKETS: "New" gang member. Any gang can wear this means "I'm going to be somebody" there is reputation with this cap also.

3. HOUSTON ASTROS: Blue - worn by Crips - Hoover Street "H" on hat.

10. PURPLE & YELLOW: These are the colors for the MBI (Malicious *****es In Effect) an all female gang known for weapons and drugs sales.

I just googled "Cincinnati Reds hats+gang members" and that's one of the things that came up. I didn't really read the website. I just checked out the "gang identification" part. I'm not a concerned parent who is worried b/c my kid is sagging his pants, so I didn't really read the whole page.

yeah, i remember back in middle school i went to a school that was a whole buncha mexicans that were all wannabe kings, so they were constantly on gang related websites and it always said stuff like what this page says. however, i do see a lot of reds hats.. i always thought it was just because wayne wore 'em.

this is nothing new to high schools in california. when i was in HS we wouldn't wear any solid blue or red clothing, or red or blue hats, or any hat with a logo on them. couldn't wear any sports jerseys or webbed belts with the extra belt hanging out.

A lot of people wear cincinnati reds hats just like a lot of people wear yankees hats. Doesn't mean they are crips. More than half of these so called "reds fitted cap gangsters" ya'll see are just following somethin they think is cool. Especially in my area, it's just a fashion thing. Same with drooped pants. Doesn't mean you a gang banger it's just somethin you do.

Cincinatti Reds

LA Blood gangs use the hat as their informal gear. The show their allegiance to their own by wearing that cap.

Blood gang color is Red, Cincy hat is red, and their name is "Reds"

Wearing the hat with the big "C" is also used to disrespect their rival Crips gang, in LA area anyway. Im not too keen on other gang areas.

I don't myself wear that hat, but I know a few cats who will wear it but have no ties to any gang, it can potentially be dangerous as some Crips might start drama, or even Bloods who don't recognize a person can start something also for representing their gang without going through the initiation, its not uncommon.
