What are we asking when we ask is he the greatest rapper alive?

Skills? Beats? Lyrical content? The whole package?

Im sorry, but Lil' Wayne is rap music for dumb people.

If you honestly feel hes the "greatest" at it, then Its just easier to assume that youre not a very bright person, and you set the bar low for yourself in terms of what you find to be entertainment.

Hes okay. Not "great"

Wow....this guy is really putting up all those awards like they mean something. This isn't basketball homey....you expect anyone to look at those stats and tell if he is the "best rapper alive".

Besides, everyone of those awards came in the last 2-3 years. Wayne wasn't doing **** before then. If threw himself into the media with a new look and sound and became the new thing by oversaturating the market. Awards in Hip Hop are more likely a popularity contest. Whoever is the big thing at the time get's them...surely you can see this. It happened with Eminem at one point,Outkast,Jay,etc...

Did Wayne change anything in Hip Hop? I give him credit for stepping his lyrics up a bit and getting all the attention on him but....that's it. Sub par lyrics, being weird just to stand out,and being a borderline junkie aren't cool and don't classify you as the best rapper alive. I could on and on but bottom line is....bar for bar there are plenty of cats out there that would get at Wayne...

or maybe people are still stuck in the past.:confusedshrug: ..in 40 years ISH will still be talking about Rakim and Big L when that type of rap wouldnt even sell 200 copies these days.:oldlol:.

You know those rappers influenced your favorite rappers right ? it wouldn't sell, but does it mean Lil' Wayen is better ? Rakim is in every knowlegeable hip hop head top rappers list :lol

Those awards are destinated to 14 year old teens who don't know sh!t but buy whatever play on the radio. I mean where is the credibility of those awards when Soulja Boy or Gucci Mane are nominated for rap artist of the year ? :confusedshrug:

Wayne is chasing paper, fine, I don't care : I'm not getting any penny from him and I'm not giving him any, so why do I care ? He just does whatever is 'hot' : Autotune and now 'rock' album ? I swear if next year, the tendancy is farting in the track, he'll do it to milk those teens who buy the albums the industry dictates to them.

And please, dont copy and paste those jokes of accomplishements.

its funny because the same people that hate rap absolutely LOVE that hardcore rock n rolls shit where you cant understand a damn word because they're screaming so loud and banging their head will yelling.

hypocrites. if you dont like lil wayne or rap music then why the hell do you enter all of the threads?

Im not gay, but you dont see me making threads about how to **** a guy in the ass in 10 easy steps do you?

cuz the thread asked the question "is wayne the best rapper alive?"...which opened the door for debate. Debate meaning both sides have to be represented in order to answer the question of whether he is or not. I don't know if the OP was expecting a thread full of Wayne fans saying "yes he is", and especially on here I can't imagine he would think that'd be the case, but when you pose a question of opinion you can't get mad when the other side of the field offers theirs as well

Eminem,Nas and Jay'z are all dope..the rest are not..and they had great careers but no longer considered to be the greatest right now. That belongs to Wayne.

I wont hate on your opinion, because I am not a hypocrite..you really like Soulja Boy tho?:confusedshrug:
I replaced Soulja Boy with Nas, just because I wouldnt get out alive if I didnt, even though Nas doesnt do much anymore.

Imo, Soulja Boy is pretty hated for his big hits that are actually ****ty like Crank That, Kiss me thru the phone, and the throw some D's on it whateverthatscalled song.

His stuff that doesnt go as mainstream is pretty catchy and good. I really hated him for awhile, but now I dont mind him as much.

It's not that I don't like Wayne it's just.....his music in the last 2-3 years hasn't gotten him into legendary status or "best rapper alive" status. I acknowledge accolades and awards but I don't use those as evidence that he is the best. T-Pain get's all kind of awards.....anybody get's awards when they are being talked about and constantly putting music out. His buzz has been strong for a while....I would expect him to clean up at award shows...I really would.

If someone asks "Is Wayne The Best Rapper Alive"..it's a question. Some will say yes and some will say no. He was claiming he was the best alive based off lyrics when he first was saying that.....lyrically there are cats that would get at Wayne IMO. Not 1 or 2 dudes....but many.

What makes you think he is the best alive? Seriously...

http://content.onsmash.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/u-mad___camron.jpg

Only a few amount of Rappers have had the success Wayne has had.

Lil Wayne has the career accomplishmentsto be a Top 10 Great HipHop/Rap Artist ever..In his early years Hot Boyz were on the billboard charts for Guerrilla Warfare (31# on Billboard Magazine),his first solo album "The Block is Hott" went double platinum and reached #3 on the billboard charts, then Lights Out and 500 Degreez also solid albums..remember this was in his early years..then as he grew up The Carter series came out,Carter 1 sold over 1 million albums and "Go DJ" was a Top 5 Hit,the Carter 2 sold more than 238,000 copies in its first week of release, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 albums chart, and went on to sell 2,000,000 copies world wide. The lead single, "Fireman," became a hit in the US, peaking at 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Carter 3 after being leaked 3 times pretty much,so he had to do triple the work before the actual Carter 3 came out and it sold more than a million copies in its first week of release.Along with his numerous # of mixtapes..including many classics like Dedication 2,Drought 3,The Suffix..etc etc.

That's not Wayne in his early days, that's around same time some of his classic mixtape's came out..and he still has verses like this to this day,you just gotta follow him more.

I don't count it as early but its def. from before he got fired into the greatest alive category and started puttin out 20 songs a day. It's at least 5 years old cuz i had it on my mp3 player freshman year of college back in 04. Back when Carter I came out he sounded like a completely different rapper

Wayne was snappin back in his Hot Boyz days....no doubt.

So his metaphors and similes are what makes him the best rapper alive? I don't know man....like I said, plenty of cats that could get at Wayne. Really, half the time his **** doesn't make sense....I know you can agree with that. Nothing wrong with liking Wayne but I think the term best rapper alive is thrown around way too loosely...mainly because people see album sales, awards, and having a knack for being everywhere as being the best.

By your logic, a song or "artist" ( I use that term loosely ), is considered good by how many records they sell or awards they win. If you were past 15, you would know that what is popular isn't always GOOD. And you say we are stuck in the past? You are COMPARING him to who is out there right now, and everybody before him. If you don't want to bring up the past, then don't compare him and say he's the best EVER.

I loved his album cause of production also but u are underrating him as an MC..Here is some of his best work from those 3 albums. I always thought he was talking about real **** in those 3 albums including songs like Jesus walks, thru the wire, never let me down, family business, get em high, hey mama, homecoming and others...

thru the wire

What if somebody from the shadow was ill got a deal on the hottest rap label around
But he wasn't talking bout coke and birds it was more like spoken word
Except he really putting it down
And he explained the story about how blacks came from glory
And what we need to do in the game
Good dude, Bad night, Right place, Wrong time
In the blink of an eye his whole life changed
If you could feel how my face felt you would know how Mase felt
Thank God I ain't to cool for the safe belt
I swear to God drive two on the sue
I got lawyer for the case to keep my safe book safe
My dawgs couldn't tell if I
I look Tom Cruise on Vanilla Sky
All they heard was in accident like GEICO
They thought I was burnt up like Pepsi did Michael
I must gotta angel
Cause look how death missed his ass
Unbreakable, would you thought they called me Mr. Glass
Look back on my life like the ghost of Christmas past
Toys R Us where I used to spend that Christmas cash
And I still wont grow up, I'm a grown ass kid
Swear I should be locked up for stupid **** that I did
But I'm a champion, so I turned tragedy to triumph
Make music that's fire, spit my soul through the wire

here's just an example from one of my fav songs of his..He's above avg. lyricist.

Last Ludacris album was fire, honestly when I listen to him he's just better, his technique on the mic is better than Kanye's.

Scarface has retired from the game.

Canibus doesn't really drop tracks nowadays, but when he does he's better, he's above lyrically and flow-wise. Only question is his beat selection which isn't always right.

Mos Def can still rap with the best of 'em, not like a young Dante smith, but still on Kanye level on the mic.

Others are on his level, or below. GZA is getting really old.

Wasn't impressed with last Luda's album. I would like to 808s over luda album any time. Idk why people are knocking Kanye because he switched his style for that 1 album..Its a great album even with auto tune.

What difference does it make if Scarface retired or not? His last album was not good and he hasn't done anything hot in a long time..

So u say Canibus doesn't drop tracks anymore, but then u say he's better than Kanye..How does that make sense? He isn't rapping and yet he still better when he drops a track here and there? That's like saying Dr. Dre is better than everyone in the game even know he hasn't dropped **** since 2001. Until he drops something special, u can't say he's better than Kanye.

How can u say Mos Def can still rap with the best of them if he doesn't rap that much anymore..Overall career u can say he's better but right now, he isn't..

Lil Wayne is nowhere near the best rapper alive and to even mention his name among the greats is straight retarded... <<<--- kids these days can't even understand that sentence, they can't even soak up that fact... they really believe wayne is that good. You give real hip hop, some real art, some real lyrics for them to listen to and they are effing lost.

Here's a thing to look at. Analyze a guy in real life saying that lil wayne is the best rapper alive, saying he has the best lyrics and claims wayne is a genius.. now analyze that guy and ask yourself how smart this guy really is in general... the answer 9 times out of 10 is that he's probably dumb as doorknob. just take a look at the kids listening to wayne as a whole, talking about wayne is a lyricist and a genius, do you really believe they are in the position to recognize a genius when they see one?? 9 times out of 10, probably not.

Wayne has some hits, I will listen to wayne but he is undoubtedly the most overrated rapper in this decade.

Its hard to say greatest rapper alive and its a really controversial topic because alot of people have different criteria. If you wanna say greatest mainstream rapper alive, I will say Jay-Z. You wanna say greatest lyrical rapper alive, I will say Mos Def. Then theres more categories like underground, best flow, etc. Alot of people see different things as hip hop and you can't just pinpoint it as one single thing because hip hop has grown into such a huge culture. Everyone's gonna have different ideas of what they think hip hop is and thats a great thing because it tells you how big hip hop really is.

jay-z dissing in the hip hop world never made sense to me... i know everybody has opinions and different styles but he doesn't have to be your favorite to realize he's one of the best to do it...

ranking rappers 1-10 is impossible, it really is and there's always somebody who disagrees, its like ranking top 10 nba players of all time, nobody knows who 2, 3, 4, 5 etc... is but we all know kareem is arguably in there somewhere. we don't know exactly where but you would be retarded if you bash somebody for putting kareem top 10 all time, because its a legitimate statement as opposed to putting Jermaine O'neal top 10 all time. Kareem is a legitimate answer.

Just like Jay-Z, he is one of the best to do it, that is a legitimate hip hop fact. all the hate, talking about overrated albums, overrated songs, its doesn't make sense. you can dislike him but failing to recognize his work is a fault on your part. for example, Eminem to my own personal taste. I listen to all his albums, and Ive enjoyed him and consider him one of the best to do it and I can't deny his lyrical talent. I like em but he is not in my top favorites just because he doesn't do that to me. but when somebody ranks him top 5 all time, its a legitimate hip hop statement considering what he has accomplished. im not going to bash whoever made the statement because its arguable. It's not like claiming lil wayne is top 5 of all time... opinions are opinions but that is a retarded statement a kid would make and it is not legit in the hip hop world. It's like saying Chris Webber is top 5 all time, even though he was a 20/10 Superstar in his career, nobody in their right mind would make that argument.

just posting the truth in my own point of view... in hop hop just like many other topics, a lot of things are arguable. there are a lot of opinions but people have to realize what to accept. if somebody puts Biggie at #5 all time, there's no need to bash him if you feel is is #1 or #7. but other things people are posting are out there... and those are the topics that need argument and correcting.

Depends on how much mainstream a rapper is. Back in the 90s good music was on and off the radio; Now u have to find Decent music its still out there.'Ye is one of my fav rappers and to call him solely mainstream is not accurate at all his aim is not young teens age 13 plus college dropout and late reg are great to me imo.

College Dropout-damn near a classic (I go back and forth whether it's this or LR as the classic)

Late Registration-see College Dropout

Graduation-Solid album.....a couple "wtf" moments but nobody is perfect. Still, 3 well above average albums in a row says something.

808's and Heartbreak- WTF?........you lost me

Right when I think he has gone 100% pop......he drops a verse and makes you go "damn, he still has it in him....."
