Since some certain folks are very sensitive to words used to describe certain music i love i shall repost a whole new set of words. Hope this doesnt hurt ur feelings.

This thread for users who respect Hip-Hop/Rap for what it is, and listen to it and tell there opinion and why it is good or why it is bad. Posting or linking to some good hip hop/ rap stuff to hook others up to what your listing to at the time. If you says a group or person sucks, why? Post song lyrics, names, beats, etc, to back up your reasoning.

I know there is a lot of bad music in hiphop, but here is also a great deal of brilliant works, and this goes for every form of music. Debate and disuss, but dont come in making a single line like "Rap sux" "Rap is crap" and then leaving the thread without explaining yourself.

Another reason for this thread is to teach a person here and there that Hip-Hop/Rap is good, and more people should listen to it, no matter where you from, age, race or religion. Music is universal.-Typhoon
A friend of mines header couldnt type it better myself.

Define real hip hop.

Um lets see a song of substance sometimes they can send a message. A song with lyrical content that will make u say sh!t i didnt think of that. Classic flow beats smooth tracks. Or they can be a full band ex. The Roots. I mean everyone has there own opinion i cant force music upon people u know.

Where's the substance in Just Rhymin with the Biz or La Di Da Di? Where's the substance in Bust a Move or Wild Thing? Point out the substance of a song like Saturdays? Time 4 Sum Akshun? Also, point out the substance of a song like Leflauh Lelfah Eskoskah?

Or are you saying Biz, Young MC, Tone Loc, De La and Redman aren't real hiphop? OGC and Heltah Skeltah, not real hiphop?

I didnt say anyone wasnt real hip-hop ur just puttin words in my mouth no homo. I just said i couldnt force music on people plus there are such things as different catergories of hip-hop as u can see im more into less mainstream music. Dance songs and word play have always been in existance what u want me to say that i never lessoned to a dance or that just listenin to some one recite poetry over a beat is the only thing to listen to i just couldnt. I cant act like i know all hip-hop shoot took me a while to figure out Wayne wasnt great. FYI Will Smith has a nice flow listen to i think i can beat Mike Tyson.

Lamar Doom
08-01-2009, 05:38 PM
TWENTY-FIVE song mixtape by Lamar Doom:

Track 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8QoN2WNXk8)- Fatlip gets and deserves a lot of credit for being the best of the group but Slim Kid Tre was always a dark horse favorite of mine.

Track 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea1UGPtqD94)- Haiku De Tat slipped under the radar but it's an all-star team of underground guys and the self-titled album is a classic in my circle

Track 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMOy9SsUQ7U)- I'm staggered when Mos is talked about on this board, everyone seems to agree on Black Star and Black on Both Sides but New Danger gets no love and I think it's a masterpiece. The last verse on this song gives me the chills

Track 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r0KpWMNxnM)- I'm not a huge Jedi Mind Tricks guy but this is an absolute monster of a track

Track 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VRZq3J0uz4&feature=PlayList&p=27C15608CABF6714&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=38)- I'm actually a little too young for KRS/BDP, I had to go back and get his stuff after it had been out for a while but they played this on backspin (XM/sirius' old school station) the other day and I can't stop bobbing my head

Track 6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwU5llQZkpY)- I am a SUCKER for old soul guitar hooks like this

Track 7 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpIl063oy24)- see?

Track 8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3sBWvsJpNI)- like most tribe fans, I consider Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders to be two of the finest hip hop albums ever created but here's a dandy from Beats Rhymes and Life.

Track 9 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIURDLsFfos)- Johnny Feeeveeerrr. There will never be another De La Soul, as much fun as the first two (5 MICS when it mattered) albums were, I think Buhloone Mindstate and Stakes is High are legitimately genius. This is a remix of the single off Buhloone.

Track 10 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eATZrHwNW7w)- hahaha, the first verse is so f*cking good. this rolly just don't look right sittin on my wrist, huh?

Track 11 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb6lzskAchM)- awfully bubble gum and party-ish for a Wu track but i absolutely love the meth+ghost combo.

Track 12 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj-BNwvPems)- I played this tape til it broke

Track 13 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XCxKXbmW40)- my musical tastes, especially hip hop, tend to be very sexist but this is a beast. (also love Bahamadia and Lauryn)

Track 14 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPepJ43SqJY)- classic. from their best album.

Track 15 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHcHUeuV5to&feature=related)- a lot of people think Com fell off after Resurrection but I think One Day is right there

Track 16 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEMt4gfSvo4)- better throw in a guilty pleasure so i don't get labeled too "conscious" (i'm just awake dog, i'm doin great dog)

Track 17 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_wIV3hrP4k)- Busta Rhymes can't carry an album on his own but he is MADE for appearance like this

Track 18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG5La6k6eTI)- wasn't sure how to work hiero into the mix. 93 til infinity? Deltron? Casual? Pep Love? went with this.

Track 19 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqAbaNEkPFU)- okay, let's get pep love in here too

Track 20 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvJ9TEj8Anc)- the hook is so funky. the "freestyle" at the end is worth the price of admission

Track 21 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsScaYNyTfw)- Atliens and Aquemini are brilliant, period.

Track 22 (http://www.last.fm/music/Jurassic+5/_/Concrete+Schoolyard)- (click the little play icon on the right, not the video at the bottom of the page) the euro release of the EP is way better than the american release, this is probably my favorite track of theirs all time, Chali 2na defines standout throughout the album and the extra verse (starts 4:07) at the end is awesome.

Track 23 (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1uvbc_blackalicious-make-you-feel-that-wa_music)- Blazing Arrow is one of my all time favorite albums, this is my favorite track

Track 24 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl-pjb7y3y0)- not much love for Digable Planets on this site but I was a fan

Track 25 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHycWO8uIME)- wish they'd done the whole song, what a sick remix

bonus track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndq1uMKukP8)- Sugar D*ck Daddy (Mr. Lawnge the 9.5)'s got the first verse and it's f*cking hilarious

hmm, yeah i don't know, i always really like him, his flow can be a little methodical though I suppose. his buddies lyrics born and lateef are pretty good too, that whole quannum collective is pretty solid. lyrics born has my favorite verse of the last few years on this track called "3 strike felony" that i can't find a link for.

At the Helm is my favourite Heiro beat by a good margin. Nice call.

Every single time I want to post that Still Rappin somewhere on these boards, I go to Youtube and remember that it's nowhere to be found. And then you wander by and pull it out of your ass. Bastard.  Mykah's "verse". Can't find the title track, but that one is great too. This quickly became one of my favourite hip hop records - appreciate you introducing it to me Lamar.

Freestyle Fellowship needs more love - jazzy funk beats with verses that just wind around them in every way imaginable. Love Aceyalone's winding flow throughout To Whom It May Concern. Gotta love Mykah going nuts on 5 O'clock Follies (downright sick beat) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WoPrxe9Kyo) and the ode to real hip hop (don't jump me loot) on Sundshine Men (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nY3Woskun-M).

Ace's Disposable Arts is one of the best concept albums out there. Sick riff on this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrfOOkmiXQg), and fantastic Moody Blues sample on this brilliant track based on a brilliant concept (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtBNoKAhEBM). Ace executes too. Long Hot Summer is right up there as well.

Punchlines go hard on this Cunnlynguists song - nifty beat too, particularly that intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ykw0hQehxw) (excuse the Kermit the Frog rapper on the 3rd [or 4th?] verse)
another Cunninlynguists with a King Crimson sample - pretty deep stuff here, particularly in Deacon's verse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj1U7EIP7nk)
can't not post this - one of the best song i've ever heard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhghoGZzcDI)
Move - from the new album/mixtape/whatever (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O4H6yRNdUk)

I only just started listening to Organized Konfusion, so I'm only one album in - but this beat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULJXdwH_qGI) goes harder than any other on their s/t debut. If you haven't heard anything by them, other classic tracks from that album include Releasing Hypnotical Gasses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySmdcta_uSg) and Audience Pleasers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVnb5oLFJH4). I'll have to move on to their sophomore album soon, but... maybe not just yet. I'm still caught up in this.

Opener and tone-setter and epic brilliance with the self titled track of the self titled album, Deltron 30300 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7_jbluF0qo). Prepare for eargasm.

Maybe more later.

this threat is a blessing for someone like me who is struggling for something new to enjoy... but anyway, how bout these crazy fukcs

http://www.tubafrenzy.org/weblog/archives/Gravediggaz.jpg

The highly slept upon, dark and demented chronically demonic Gravediggaz. With the impeccable Prince Paul producing, RZA showcasing his underrated mic skills (while no doubt fiddling around a lot on the production)on the first two albums, the late great Too Poetic and finally Frukwan, this group had all the necessary ingredients to inflict terror throughout the hip hop landscape. And they did, to a point. Even if you thought this whole thing was a cheap gimmick, look beyond that. The production was stellar for nearly all the tracks and because they created these fiendish, hyperbolic personas their lyrics were dark, crazy and highly entertaining.
We are all familiar with songs like Damien, Natural Born Killaz and Luminal, but all of these songs were just small parts of a larger piece. Gravediggaz only talked about some macabre, raunchy, -philia type subject matter. While maintaining this deranged focus, they put horror core (hilarious) on the map. Their catalogue is transcendent; if you like the WU and haven

I'm not getting the reference. Stan?

no song in particular, just clearly so heavily influenced by him. you could play a few bars and not tell them apart sometimes

I really need to check a few of Mr Lif's albums. That beat was absolutely ridiculous (or ridiculoid?).

one of the best "battle rhymes" songs i've ever heard
Mr. Lif- Triangular Warfare (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlhcxGI8qzA)

Ah okay. Yeah, you can definitely see some influence - depending on the Em song you choose. He's a little more versatile, whereas Ace is the Masta of consistency.

I was thinking Stan because of the song you posted.

If you want punchlines, that's a good track :

The Archetype album was good.

Still listening to your list Lamar, +1 for those two soulful jams in the middle, by Monch and Ed OG/Ace respectively.

i got into hip hop in 88, one of the first tapes i had was THIS GUY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgBXKAozs1c)
(i know you meant Tonedeff but it reminded me to post this). Used to sit in my parents basement playing Ikari Warriors and rocking this tape on my dual tape deck/record player. Those were the days.

this thread didn't stick around but you HAVE to hear this first song by Casual (Greyboy featuring Casual). bunch of good links though. That Sound Providers album is outstanding.

so I'm a pretty big hiero fan, Del, Casual, and Pep Love are all in my top 30 all time. If you haven't heard Pep Love's Ascension album or Deltron 3030, go get them immediately.

Casual is a monster, my buddy just sent me this new song off the Greyboy album and I thought you should hear it:

Six Pence (http://www.esnips.com/doc/f172ccbc-f897-49c1-8c5b-b0e6fad5e832/Greyboy_-_Era_Correct_-_03_-_Six_Pence_Ft._Casual,_Main_Flow__Truly_Odd_) (you have to login to esnips to hear that so if you don't want that here's the back up link right here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/3k6nto))

and arguably my favorite Casual song, off the Handsome Boy Modeling school (Prince Paul and Automater) album:

It's Like That (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXGW5ZVh7u8)
man i f*cking love that song

as long as we're on the subject, I just recently have been listening to "The Sound Providers- Looking Backwards" album and it is stellar if you're like me and miss all the heavy jazz sounds of 90's hip hop (pharcyde, gangstarr, tribe, etc) Sound Providers- Looking Backwards Sample (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVWy-6PTKkM). Reminds me a bit of that first Typical Cats album too which is fantastic if you are looking for some good hip hop. Typical Cats - Reinventing the Wheel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAP2cHarzHQ)

couple more Typical Cats songs if you're into it

That's sick dude. Starting out with the Steppenwolf like electric riff, before that funky guitar comes in to polish it off. A little Herbie Hancock groove in there perhaps? Whatever, me likey. I'll have to check the album.

Damn, I completely forgot about Handsome Boy Modelling School. That Casual beat is nice. I've only ever heard So... How's Your Girl - but White People has been on the list. I love 3rd Eye Vision, but I never really got too far into the other members of Heiro, apart from Del. I'm not even much of a fan of 93 til Infinity, apart from the delicious title track. The rest doesn't strike me the right way at all.

Typical Cats ft ****ing w btw.

best time to post this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qyT4Hxl4ck) track. elzhi's verse just gave me chills and takes on a new meaning now.

@ 'donks - LOVE 'dear diary'. masta ace is slept on as f*ck. 'disposable arts' is a personal classic.

@ lamar - pharoahe's 'broken heart' is crazy to me. amazing beat, dope rhymes. i prefer it to anything off his last album (except maybe 'welcome to the terrordome'). 'make you feel that way' takes me back. i haven't heard that track in a minute. i used to crank it on the way to the beach.
