View Full Version : True or false: If LeBron was a deticated sprinter, could he challenge Usain Bolt?

PleezeBelieve

Bolt: 6'5, 190 lbs

LeBron (if deticated): 6'8, 215-220 lbs

LeBron beats him from what I see of him at his current size. LeBron has ALL the attributes needed to challenge Usain. He has tremendous explosiveness into his gate. Just tremendous. He has excellent turnover once he gets going. And finally, he has the mass/agility combination that would be hugely benefical in Track and Field. Even @ 260+ lbs, LeBron runs about a 4.45, right? He's somewhere around there.

I easily see him being a sub-4.3 guy 45 lbs lighter.

What ya'll think?

This is just terrible.

So you think just because you see Lebron run across 90 feet of hardwood he can run against a guy who is just smashing his own world records.

Nobody is comparing to this guy.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start to say Bolt is using performance enhancement in the future.

LeBron is fast for his size. But not that fast dude.

Two different sports, son.

Lebron's tears can cure cancer, but unfortunately Lebron has never cried.
Lebron's eyes can shoot lazers, but unfortunately he chose basketball over any military.
Lebron's arms can swat a missile out of the sky, unfortunately he chooses to block midgets on fast breaks.
Lebron's legs can feed a whole village in Ethiopia, unfortunately Lebron did not choose the life of a self-sacrificing moron.

If anyone is challenging Jesus for savior it's Paul Pierce. I distinctly remember Pierce being carried off the court, near death, only to return minutes later fully healed. Not quite as impressive as coming back from death, but about a lot closer than LeBron has gotten.

that was most definitely in yards. i may not be the biggest know it all in basketball but trust me i know nearly everything there is to know about the sport of track & field. there is absolutely no way lebron james is running under 10 second let alone under 10.7 or so. i think he might be able to eek out at high 10.9 or 11.0 flat or so after a while of rough training. do not underestimate the difficulty of the sport.

EDIT: i didn't see that you already stated it was in yards. but 10.9 for 100 yards is about 11.3/4 for 100m which wouldn't make a blimp on the women's scene today let alone as a guy.

LeBron is an amazing player, and a truly gifted athlete, but there are a some things that no amount of training would do for him.

He would not be better than Tiger at golf.
He would not be better than Lance on a bike.
He would not be better than Roger at tennis.
He would not be better than Bolt at 40m - 400m.

I am being literal when I say that LeBron would have a better chance of flapping his arms and flying to the moon, than beating Bolt in the 100 meters, regardless of training for either.

I agree with LeBron is one of the best athletic players of all-time. I still think VC was the most athletic ever and is still a beast if given the chance but LeBron is just a beast once he gets moving. As for the 100m, Lebron could be a GREAT sprinter, but Usain has it down to a fine art in terms of explosiveness and more importantly, strides. I think LeBron may have issues there. Just a legit matter of 'what if' I suppose....

lebron james could not be a great sprinter. lebron james trying to explode out of the blocks would be a joke. people that no nothing about the sport of track & field seem to think that because usain is "huge" that every other person that's big would be successful. what those who actually followed the sport before the olympics last year is that usain has been at this level since he was 17 thats why he's so successful. like i said earlier...lebron would have a hard time beating the US #1 female sprinter (allyson felix) before he ever got near usains level. and running 11.0 as a dude doesn't even allow you to be a walk-on at powerful t&f D1 uni's.

Also, people saying "if Lebron were 40-50 pounds lighter" forget that part of the REASON he is so fast at his current weight is that he has a TON of muscle in his legs. Lebron's body fat % is already very low, so to drop 40+ pounds, he'd invariably be losing muscle, which would hurt his speed. He also doesn't have an elite amount of fast-twitch muscles in his legs, which is what gives explosive movement such as in sprinting (out of the gates) or first step in basketball.

Bolt's ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch fibers in his legs must be INSANE. On top of that, he's 6'4" but has legs of a 6'6"+ person, making his stride length enormous. And as noted, his leg turnover is phenomenal at any height, much less on a guy that size.

What people don't realize is height is actually a detriment for sprinters, Usain Bolt being the ONE exception ever. Look at Yohan Blake, Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, any sprinter they're all 5'10" - 6'2" tall. LeBron at 40lbs lighter would be slow as **** compared to these guys.

Lebron ran a 4.6 40. That's good. Great for being 260lbs.

But no chance in hell is he sniffing Usain Bolt that is an insult to guys that actually ran competitive Track and Field at any sort of significant regional/collegiate level or semi-pro/pro/national level. Lebron if anything might have decathlete potential IF he proved he could do Track and Field athletics in the first place, which he never has. I'm not predicting he'd be good or bad, likely he'd be good but come on this dude could be a bum in Track events for all we know he's never even attempted Track and Field athletics.

For comparison, Wilt was a Track and Field competitor at KU. He high jumped competitively but for novelty sake would bounce around other events during practices and non-competitive freshman meets. He ran a 4.4 40 in college, and a 4.6 40 at 290lbs at 28 years old without shoes... So Wilt Chamberlain despite being 7-1 290 was just as fast as Lebron at 6-8 260. Wilt Chamberlain would never beat Usain Bolt in a race. No chance in hell. And I don't think Lebron would beat Wilt in a race. He's just not built right, he's bow legged FFS.

He also allegedly had a 4.4 40 in high school, when he was closer to 230-240lbs

I don't see why he'd make it up, that's right about what I'd expect from a freak athlete like him.

I've done shit like that, so have my friends. I never got my 40 timed but I've been a walk-on participant in Track and Field events I never even trained for, just for fun... Lebron plays flag football in his spare time, he bikes in his spare time, I don't know in my experience athletes that enjoy athletics will try random athletic stuff when opportunities present themselves.

If LeBron were 20 years old and people remembered how fast he was at top speed this wouldn't be such a mocked thread though it's extremely improbable that even if he had dedicated his life to it that he'd be as fast... after all Bolt is probably the fastest top speed guy ever.

LeBron James' biggest weakness in a sprinting competition would be the same one that Bolt has... a slow first step compared to the guys with shorter legs.

There were years in Cleveland in which LeBron was still gaining speed as he was nearing the hoop from a full court run because his first step was not his strength and it was also very clear at that time that he was the fastest top speed player in the league by a wide margin which was and is utterly insane for a guy of that size.

The dude's speed literally looked like a video game when he was in his late teens and early 20s and it's not completely unimaginable that if he'd have dedicated his life to it from the beginning that he could have been an Olympic runner... but to challenge Bolt? Probably not.

It's no disrespect, Wilt is a gifted Track and Field athlete in his own right. But we're talking about the freaking world record holder.

Wilt wasn't even the fastest sprinter at KU in the 1950's, and he was running the same 40 time as Lebron runs today, in his bare feet. That's great, they're extremely fast for gigantic NBA athletes... but Usain Bolt? lol.

Lebron doesn't even know how to lift his knees when he runs. That was the same problem Shaq had on the show Shaq-vs when he tried to do running events.

Honestly, I think Lebron's legs are too bulky. Not up top, you want big quads, but down low. You want a lean, gazelle-like lower leg to give you leverage without much cost of rotating mass. Lebron's kind of bow-legged, and his lower legs are hefty. Good for 20 yard and maybe 40 yard sprints. Bad for getting into a full-stride to compete with legitimately fast well proportioned runners where the distance involves achieving maximum stride/speed.

He's too tall to be a world-class sprinter. Most sprinters are in the 6 foot flat range. Bolt is a rarity because he's a little bit taller but he has extremely long legs. LeBron's physique is not built for running competitions. If you're looking for an NBA player who could be elite sprinters (not world record breakers, mind) then look at the point guards like Tony Parker, Westbrook, Irving, etc.
