I'm in the latter stages of starting a small company. I can't get into details about the nature of the company just yet (food related) until I put the finishing touches on it. Rest assured if I'm investing resources into it has lots of growth potential.

Anyway, I'm looking to hire a personal assistant from the Bay area. This could be you.

Qualifications:

Highly Organized.
Able to multi-task.
Valid driver's license and transportation (public transit is fine).
High level communication skills.
Ability to go with the flow, adaptive, flexible, demeanor.

What I will be providing you with:

A cell phone with internet (blackberry) that you must keep on you at all times, and are welcome to use for non-work stuff too.

Very relaxed work environment.

Pay starts @ $15 an hour under the table. If you prove to be reliable and you work hard + we get along it turn into a salary after 3 months with paid vacations.

You will be attending lots of social events and the perks that come along with them. Lots of free stuff, going out to dinner frequently, etc.

A typical day or duties:

Making and answering phone calls/Paying bills/dropping off dry cleaning/Doing grocery shopping/Picking up weed (this position is in SF)/Scheduling and Planning/Helping my girlfriend out.

Yeah. I'm contemplating whether to juggle studies and a job. I really want to focus on my studies but a little cash on the side is tempting.

I'd totally do that if I lived in San Fran.
I would too, but sadly I live nowhere near the San Fran area. I live somewhere in Southern Ontario, so chances are slim to none unless this was some online job.

Tian, A year from now I'm going to hopefully be hiring quite a few people because this will have taken off and I'll be running and operating numerous storefronts, etc. I obviously intend to keep ISH updated the whole way through. I even want to pitch a show about the entire process of starting an independent company from the ground up.

Jay, I will eventually need a bodyguard in the not so distant future. Not a bodyguard in the traditional sense but someone who is overseeing certain things and make sure people are honest. You would have access to lots of access to women (SF has the most diverse/beautiful women in US) just by living in the bay. Not to mention I will be employing hot chicks.

Ha, helping my girlfriend entails making sure she's not mad at me.

That would definitely be a plus. This will be pretty unconventional company in SF so thinking outside the box is definitely a big plus as well. I don't think any of those guys are in the bay however.

Really? Slave labor? It would come out to a little more than 1,800 a month. Closer to 2,000. That's only the first 3 months and then it will become a salary if things go well. A free cell phone with unlimited everything is a 200 dollar a month expense as well.

Complete irrelevance. Nice. BTW, When I was in school I worked from anywhere from $7.75 an hour at Wal-Mart to $16 an hour at a welding shop. 16/hour was awesome money when I was living without real expenses. It's not like I'm arbitrarily deciding 15 isn't good income. I've made in that range and realized how fast money goes away. Rent. Food. Utils. Internet. TV. Car insurance. These are pretty basic things most people have. You're making $1800/mo, if the fuel pump goes in your car, you're waiting two months to get it fixed w/o a loan. As you're well aware I'm sure, expenses come from every possible angle, and a lot of them you don't expect. And this is even before having any money to actually have fun with.

Which brings me to the point of the story: $15/hour is not good if you have to support yourself completely. In fact, it sucks. End of discussion.

You could do worse than 24K a year. I'll put that out there. But it's not something ANYONE should be excited about unless a) it's their dream job (I'd work 24K a year to do a LOT of things, being a personal assistant not one of them), or b) they're a student or living at home. When I was 16, $15/hr was f'ing sweet, and I think that's where most of these people who don't have real expenses are at. I'm not trying to belittle you or anything, I'm just saying, $15/hr with a full pallet of expenses on your plate full of expenses sucks, unless you're allowed to live in your basement for like $200/mo.

MarloStanfield
08-25-2009, 10:22 PM
15 dollars an hour tax free is really quite good JDG even for a recent college grad in this current economy. Is it enough to live lavishly on? No, it's easily enough to survive on though especially if you're not supporting anyone/thing. That's aside from the benefits of working for a start up business and all of the perks that come along with that. Not to mention it's the simply the starting pay (15 an hour) and it will eventually become a full fledged salary. It's not very demanding (30 hours) and you could easily work at a restaurant or some other part time gig.

How many 'personal assistants' are offered salary?

How many 'personal assistants' are offered salary?
lots of them...a personal assistant would be someone that is capable of running a restaurant while the manager is away...not someone that is asked to traffic drugs...

also, that salary would be a tax write off for you, as well as the phone, so it would be in your best intrest to report this person's pay, unless you are not reporting your own income...

WTF are you talking about trafficking drugs for? This is f*cking San Francisco. Everyone in the city smokes weed including the mayor. Trafficking f*cking drugs, wtf? Go rain on someone else's parade.

I've laid an outline as to what the job demands. It is not that challenging nor is there a lot of responsibility involved. If someone offered me 15 bucks an hour to hang around the and work in a super laid back environment I'd be all over that. Whoever ends up as my 'assistant' will be really happy and look forward to coming to 'work'.

My bad, I forgot no one gets arrested for pot in Cali...

I was more trying to make the point that most managers would hire an assistant to manage for them while they went out and got their own weed, or went grocery shopping, or took thier car in, or went to the dentist, ect...

in most cases a personal assistant is a position tht secretaries (who also have a salary) bust their asses to try and become...they would even have 401ks...they would have a complete resume and pay thier own rent, ect...

in this case the term "personal assistant" is used a bit loose...
you seem to be conflating an administrative assistant and a personal assistant. the word personal in the job title indicates that you will be performing personal chores for the person you assist. getting dry cleaning, making mundane phonecalls, grocery shopping, ordering ****, etc. If marlo wants his personal assistant picking up a sack along with the dry cleaning, so be it.

and your previous post about a restaurant manager leaving a personal assistant in charge while they go run errands shows just how clueless you are (both about this particular topic as well as life in general apparently). The spectrum of personal assistants is broad and varied, but taking over your job so you can run the errands you hired them to do is generally not part of the description.

Yeah okay lets all act like we know what has occurred each second of the other's life and make up things based on that. I can make up lies too, but I like to say things based on evidence, real evidence. For example, I can claim you live in SF, because you said so. Get it? sure evidence

This person will be assisting me in whatever area I may need help in. Most importantly he/she will help me stay on top of my finances, answer/return phone calls, keep me organized...all things I'm not good at.

You will be attending lots of social events and the perks that come along with them. Lots of free stuff, going out to dinner frequently, etc.

A typical day or duties:

In the summer there are plenty of kids home from school lookin for just a simple job to make a few extra bucks per week. You could give some chick $10/hr for ten hours a week just to take care of the shit each week that you'd rather save some time on.

Basically 400/month for an extra 40 hours worth of time. Thats like getting a week of free time. If you have a pretty demanding work schedule but make a decent buck, I could definitely see it being worth it.

Or just get a mail order bride, :lol . Might even be cheaper.

You want to just give me the money you are going to waste?

I can tell you that you are going to fail. You are not going to listen. You'll spend some money and eventually give up.

I actually have a startup and would be willing to give you pointers, since I have 3 days off.

For starters, unless you are creating an actual tangible, patentable product, there is really no point of you keeping what you are doing secret from a community of basketball users (or in general). Every business is hard work, and if yours is so easy, then you are likely overlooking a lot. If your model does make sense, anyone with deep pockets could come and kick you out of the market.

It's why beside sharing your idea and utilizing free resources (such as LinkedIn etc), your biggest hurdle is to get talented people around you.

Honestly, you may have a great idea, but at this stage of the game having someone you barely know service your girlfriend and pick you herb just screams of you not taking this even a bit seriously.
