View Full Version : Player's signature moves (well-known and lesser-known)

We all know MJ's patented fadeaway or double pump reverse layup, Shaq's Black Tornado, Gervin's smooth finger roll, Kareem's skyhook, Nique's windmill, Bird's fallaway jumper and Magic's no-look pass (among many others). But what about other players that, although noticed for their greatness, don't have a move associated with them (at least in my mind)? Players that easily come to mind are Havlicek, Zeke, Ewing, Admiral, Cheeks, KJ, Tiny, Stockton, Malone, etc. I would say Pippen as well but from watching him I think his sweeping finger roll where he brings the ball over his head with one hand then sweeping it towards the basket and rolling it in is a move that just explains his grace in one fell swoop.

If any of those players I mentioned have a signature move that is obvious, feel free to flame me for it. Any other players that you wish to add to the discussion go ahead. I just want to know any single moves that you'd associate with any all-time great.

I am making a list, I know basketball nerd alert but I am done packing for college and I all I have to do is wait now.

Yep, was too lazy to mention that. I guess I will also mention Duncan's bank shot, Kobe's cockback reverse dunk, Clyde's "gliding" dunks, Dr. J's one-handed reverse layup, McHale's up and under, etc. etc.

First of all...

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!!!

For not mentioning Timmy's "Killer Crossover"/"UTEP Two-Step".

Having said that, and in no particular order...

-Steve Smith's 'fake spin'
-Alien (Sam Cassell) right handed spin/step-back jumper (usually from the elbow)
-Van Exel's 'jerk' (high dribble, body shake. defender frozen, no crossover needed.)
-Gary Payton's back-down dribble --> 1/2 spin dribble (also mastered by B-B-B-BILLUPS!)
-KJ's crossover (right to left, in front of the body--nothing fancy, but lightning quick, and he slammed the ball hard on the crossover)
-CWebb's one-handed post/drive. (right hand crab dribble backing up, turn to the lane, pick up the ball and hold it behind his head without touching it with his left. usually a dunk, sometimes a finger roll)
-Rod Strickland's 'inside-out' dribble. You know the one. Looks like a right-to-left crossover in front of the body, except he brings it back to the right--and usually leaves the defender frozen.
-Manu's step-through
-Tony Parker's dead-sprint where he takes crazy long strides coming at you, but also veers side-to-side like a drunk-ass... then lays it up and falls over. He does it just about every game. Wade and Manu both do it well, too. Jason Kidd has his own version, but he doesn't sell it quite as well.
-Terry Porter had a weird pounding drive that usually ended up with a lob/hook shot thing (bastard overhand layup with his arm way out to the side)
-Terry Cummings, catch, jab-step, jumper. 0 dribble. David West looks like a Cummings clone when he does it--it's a mirror of Terry's.
-Tim Duncan's "WHAT?! THAT WASN'T A FOUL! WHAT?! I DIDN'T TOUCH HIM!" look, where he makes gigantic bug eyes and throws his hands out to his sides, palms up, then runs in circles explaining to anyone who'll listen (ref, coach, assistant coach, scorekeeper, cheerleader, beer vendor, ball boy) that he has no idea what just got called.

The last one... I'm a huge fan of Timmy, but his less-talked about move that still qualified as a trademark was his dragon-kick scoop shot. He'd take off going at the basket, hold the ball two-handed with an underhand grip, kick off a defender (karate style), and make a scoop with his arm extended to the side away from the defender. How that s**t never got called, I have no idea. I used to watch a LOT of Golden State and Miami games when he was down there, and I can't count how many guys I saw catch Timmy's foot with their junk.

It probably took a while for you to make that post so I'll let it slide, but I added his UTEP Two Step ages ago, in my first edit in fact. Good post though, thanks for the input.

Wilt's finger roll was awesome. He also had a great fadeaway which he seemed to bank in a lot.

Edited, hold your horses. I'm surprised no one here has stepped up to tell me of some old-school sig moves, apparently Havlicek still doesn't have any, and he is one player I'm really curious about as I don't know much about him except his stats/accomplishments/clutch play.

Also, I guess I am putting in "weak side/help defense block" for Bill Russell? Because he popularized that concept when he came into the league.

Here's an old school set:

-Tiny Archibald going around his back from left to right, then picking up the ball with his right hand and swinging it back accross his body to do a left handed scoop/hook (he was left handed)
-Connie Hawkins routinely driving without touching the ball with his left hand at all. He would pick up the ball and swing it behind him and then up and over (like a windmill) to get it into layup position, or palm it and reach out in front of him around waist-high to scoop/finger roll it.

These guys were both well ahead of my time, but I had a coach during high school who hooked me up with a lot of old recordings, so I got the priviledge of watching them a bit.

Mark Jackson- Backing down a player at the top of the key

Reggie Miller- Trying to purposely draw contact with his legs out while shooting a three to draw a foul. Many players do it today, but he was one of the originators.

Patrick Ewing- Catch with back to basket and quick turnaround J with no dribble

Penny Hardaway- He had this move where he would slowly back down a player and then quickly spin away from the defender and slash to the basket.

Your move's at 0.49 seconds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpP4ntaKPy0&NR=1#t=49s)
He'd do this (or act like he was gonna do it) on A LOT of backdoor alley-oops as well (as sorta seen at 3:10 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpP4ntaKPy0&NR=1#t=3m10s)). Ahh, such a lost art form...
