Remember back ten years ago or so, there seemed to be hip hop record labels everywhere.

Bad Boy Entertainment
No Limit Records
Ruff Ryders
Roc-a-Fella
Murder, Inc.
Cash Money Records
Suave House
Rap-a-Lot
Hypnotize Minds
Ruthless
So So Def
Slip-N-Slide
Aftermath
Hoo Bangin'

Now, I can't even tell you what label these new cats on now a days.

Yeah, that's true. Nobody reps their record labels anymore. I remember when they used to do So So Def remixes with Lil Bow Wow and Jagged Edge and shit.

*It's too easy and cheap to make everything yourself now. That means quality goes down too, since the f*cks that would be weeded out can still pump out garbage.

*This goes for all music now.

I can only imagine Soulja Boy trying out for Bad Boy Entertainment.

Well I'll EMIRGE off ya set, now ya know God damn
I show LIVIN LARGE ****** how to flip a DEF JAM
And RUFF up the mother****in' HOUSE
Cause I smother you COLD CHILLIN' mother ****ers are still WARNER BROTHERS
I'm RUTHLESS my clan don't have to act wild
That **** is JIVE, an old SLEEPING BAG/PROFILE
This soft comedian rap **** ain't the rough witty
On the reel to reel it wasn't from a TUFF CITY
****** be game, thinking that they lyrical surgeons
They know their mics are formed at VIRGIN
And if you ain't boned a mic you couldn't hurt a bee
That's like going to Venus driving a MERCURY
The CAPITOL of this rugged slang, is WU-TANG
Witty Unpredictable Talent And Natural Game
I DEATH ROW an MC with mic cables
The EPIC is at a RUSH ASSOCIATED LABELS
From EASTWEST to ATCO, I bring it to a NEXT PLATEAU
But I keep it phat though
Yo, I'm hittin' batters up with the WILD PITCH style
I even show an UPTOWN/MCA style
Who thought he saw me on 4TH & BROADWAY
But I was out on the ISLAND, bombing MC's all day
My PRIORITY is that I'm FIRST PRIORITY
I bone the secret out a ***** in a sorority
So look out for A&M, the abbot and the master
Breakin' down your PENDULUM
As I fiend MC's out with a blow that'll numb the
a-ppendix, I'm holdin more more weight than COLUMBIA
Index INTERSCOPE, we RCA. clan
That's comin' with a plan to free a
slave of a mental death MC don't panic
Throw that A&R ***** off the boat in the ATLANTIC
Now who's the BAD BOY character, not from ARISTA
But firin' weapons released on GEFFEN
So duck as I struck with the soul of MOTOWN
While CENTRAL BROADCASTING SYSTEMS are slowed down
You're Dirty, like that Bastard
It's gettin drastic

Read the label and say it loud
Another Wu banger
Thirty-six chambers, to your area
Yeah, the RZA, phat tracks on a disc
Rza razor rza razor sharp
Another Wu-Tang production kid, comin at ya

as bad as soulja boy is, bad boy hardcore repped ma$e and he was terrible. i could see soulja boy being on bad boy back in the day. how many good rappers did that label actually have? not many... they were just big cause biggie and because puffy was in the headlines, and puffy is a TERRIBLE rapper himself.

WHAT!! Mase was an alright rapper to me. He actually was the first person I heard with that Fab-style flow that everyone likes to steal now. Bad Boy also had the LOX. If you want to see Jadakiss dancing, look for the honey remix. Funny stuff.

at the time i liked mase. but go back and actually listen to him, he is terrible. he mumbles and talks like he has cotton balls in his mouth (or puffy's balls, i forget which). and if the hip-hop industry sucks now and everyone now stole from mase, doesn't that imply that mase sucked too? and the lox? they were ok, but haven't been relevant in a decade.

i think everyone was thinking that mase was good because of some nostaliga. i have nostaligia for that era too, but honestly he was terrible.

I understand what you are saying but you do have to realize that the LOX kinda split up and Jadakiss has always been relevant. Styles P had a hit or two as well. They havent released an album since 2000 and are planning on releasing an album this year. Mase is better than most of the rappers out there today in my opinion. Not as good as I remember, but still better than most of the trash I hear today.

i actually do not listen to music that much except for rap haha. i like 80s and 90s rap, some 2000s rap (but not much), and some 90s rock and stuff. i really listen to talk radio whenever im listening to the radio, so my music listening is limited to things i liked before i discovered talk radio.

It is not hip hop labels, it is the entire industry. Some very big company's, bigger than any on the list, just service the catalog now. No new acts.

yeah, i've been listening to talk radio since i've wore out all of my cds in my rotation... i find npr pretty interesting and informative. even though i don't agree with any of the right wing guys on the am, listening to them is entertaining. i don't find sports talk or howard stern type stuff very appealing.

mainstream record labels arnt cool anymore due to the internet. because of the internet, more of the up and coming artists are from an indie background, which means they do it all themselves, so majore labels are no longer relevant. we know GBE AND TDE

You name all these labels but fail to mention the greatest of all...
DEATH ROW.

Can't forget Laface either.

A lot of them were just money-laundering fronts for gangs and the government cracked down on them, especially the bigger ones. Death Row was a Piru/Blood front run by Suge Knight, Murder Inc was a laundry service for Kenneth 'Supreme' McGriff's outfit, Rap-A-Lot wa run by the infamous James Prince.

I was not a fan of Mase when he was active. I thought he was pretty bad. But compared to the people now he's really good.

Dude Mase had some of the tightest laid back flows... he might not have had much substance but it was always enjoyable listening to him
