Don't know what a 'that guy' actor is? It's an actor that's in a lot of movies, and you always say, "hey, it's that guy, what's his name!?" And it takes you a few minutes to remember. The actor is in a lot of movies, is a character actor, and has played in a leading role very rarely if at all.

So, without any further adieu:

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/11/17589551_03ad9855ce_m.jpg

Micheal Ironside

A face only a science fiction fan could love.

Has acted in such great films as:

Scanners
Top Gun
Total Recall
the Next Karate Kid
Starship Troopers
the Machinist
Terminator: Salvation

So, what's yours?

Michael Caine is absolutely NOT a "that guy," he's Michael friggin' Caine. Academy Awards for Best Supporting in '86 and '99, noms for Best Actor in '66, '72, '83, and '02. The reason the film gets instantly better is because he's a legendary actor, not a "that guy."

I don't think Steve Buscemi, Danny Trejo, and John Leguizamo really count. Maybe John Leguizamo, but he was The Pest. :confusedshrug:

I don't know if he really qualifies either, but not too long ago I was havin a discussion about Michael Biehn, and how he had some big roles in big movies, but he was always outshined by somebody else in the flick and never really got much love cuz of it.

Terminator, he was outshined by Arnold. Tombstone definitely by Val Kilmer and probably Kurt Russell also. In The Rock his role wasn't as big as Kyle Reese or Johnny Ringo, but he had Ed Harris, Nick Cage, and Connery ahead of him on the depth chart. That movie actually had a lot of people in it, the Candyman, Richie from Out For Justice, Dr. Cox from Scrubs, Can't-Get-Right from Life, and probably some other cats I can't remember right now. Aliens, he didn't have Arnold or Val Kilmer, but Sigourney Weaver was obviously the main main character. Planet Terror his role was smaller also.

But moral of the story is, Michael Biehn needs more props.

the problem with "that guy" is that these individuals are strong actors who have found their niche in supporting roles. regardless of their great performances they are not the main draw and that is okay. especially the older guys, being a that guy just means they have longevity and the ability to adapt in the industry. how about chazz palminteri, robert davi, etc.. it is hard to define what encompasses "that guy".

Reading comprehension? I said he's graduated to a full name basis, I didn't say he always was.

And 'that guy' are actors who appear in lots of films and you can't remember their name. Turtorro, Cazale, Caine, Rudd, Buscemi, none of these guys fit the criteria.

I figured I didn't have to explain it, but I guess I have to.

The reason they're "that guys" is because they're neutral. They don't suck, but they're not great. They bat .250. Their roles serve a purpose, don't leave you wanting more, and are forgettable. That why you can't remember their names.

Have you watched Cazale's films? He was a brilliant actor. He hardly fits the criteria.

Oldman obviously isn't 'that guy' but besides Daniel Day Lewis possibly, he's the best living actor IMO. Guy is a complete chameleon and he can also play more subtle, undertoned characters like commissioner Gordon. Shame he never had the leading man look or he'd be the biggest movie star ever.

Same goes for Philip Seymour Hoffman, guy is brilliant in everything he does but due to genes, we see more of Channing Tatum than we do of him. Natural selection I guess, but I digress :oldlol:

He's more of your supporting role type of guy. I don't see him in anything else at this point than intense villain type of roles but he does it better than most as a young actor. And the movies he's been in, he kept them entertaining. So' I'd pick him in this category.

Craig Robinson. Edit: T.O. Raps beat me.

Here's my 'that guy': Vincent Schiavelli, he was in 152+ movies/tv shows. Sadly, he died a few years back.
He was my first thought, I had no idea what his name was, but i've seen him in a bunch of stuff. I had no idea he had died, he always creeped the heck outta me. He was the train guy in Ghost wasn't he?

William Fitchner
Another favourite of mine.

Ok, my nomination will be Bruce McGill

The Insider
W.
The Legend of Bagger Vance
The Sum of All Fears
Matchstick Men
Collateral

and he was also a recurring character on MacGyver.

He's shown up in a lot of stuff and is pretty good.

Just look at this list....

Stormare's filmography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Stormare#Filmography)

He's shown up in quite a few big movies.

Cliff Curtis

Particularly liked his role in Training Day and everything else basically.

Same with Hiroyuki Sanada

His role in Sunshine and Last Samurai were great. Your typical tough Japanese dude.

Same with this guy.

Ken Watanabe. Probably one of my favorite Japanese actors.

Streetcar Named Desire
On the Waterfront
Baby Doll
The Birdman of Alcatraz
One Eyed Jacks
Patton

Pretty cool thread.

So who are the that guy actors that you absolutely hate, and not just because they always play the villain?

For me it's this guy:
