its crazy how time fly.

this was actually a great system, to me it had better launch titles than the PS2 did but still didnt live up to Sony's sh*t. I bet if the Dreamcast had a DVD player with it Sega would still be alive.. but o well.

I still don't understand why the Dreamcast wasn't more successful. It came out before the PS2. It had plenty of great games. And even when the ps2 came out, how much time did we have to wait to get some good games ?

The Dreamcast should have won. But everyone thought the ps2 would be much better because of the ps1. And the DVD player too. :banghead: **** Sony. :rant :rant :rant

Haha. I forgot all about the Memory Packs for those things. I remember the good memory packs had like animations on it for each different game. Powerstone 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games and I used to play so much 2k on that thing. The 3d Sonic games and Shenmue on that where pretty fun too. I had so many games for my Dreamcast.

The controller sway people away. We are used to PS1 stick so much, any other stick felt very strange. No homo.

I bought mine this day 10 years ago. Along with Ready2Rumble and NFL2k. What a great system. Played mine for years, especially after getting the boot disc and burning tons of games.

 Played mine til the basement flooded. For some reason, the Dreamcast was on the floor, and the PS2 was on top of the TV. It should have been the other way around. Still worked until it fell of the dresser onto hardwood floor and shattered.

I remember I was skeptical of the Sega Dreamcast. I was only 11 at the time but I was a huge Sony fan boy and was so dam biased towards sony that I talked a lot of trash about this new system. A few weeks later my best friend got a dreamcast and I was invited over to play. My life changed that day.

Sega Dreamcast

I use to love Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, NBA2k, some of the fighting games, etc etc. Geez, how the hell did Sega collapse. One of the best system ever created and they crashed! :(

Dreamcast is getting overrated on this board (I guess it's the cool thing to do :oldlol: )

I had one and after the PS2 came out, I wish I had that instead. Lack of 3rd Party games killed the system (EA did not produce any games for the Dreamcast.)

What? Unless my memory is horrible, but I remember people we're waiting outside the store at 2 am to pick up a PS2 at launch. The DVD option was an important feature and made a PS2 a must buy. Not to mention the initial GTA III was one of the most hyped games I've ever witnessed.

Fair enough. Dreamcast biggest problem IMO was the inability to play DVD's and the lack of quality games after a year. The second Sonic game practically came out when the system was dying.

People do that with EVERYTHING...

I didn't give a f*ck about the ps2 (still don't). At the time my psx was still good and I was playing NBA Live 2001. Why bother with a ps2? Plus I had a dvd player (not a huge selling point like the blu ray in ps3.) DVD players were out since '96/'97.

Backward compatibility was a huge selling point for the PS2.

Remember, DVD players were still pricey around 2000. I remember spending $200+ on my JVC DVD player around that time. The consumer's mentality was a DVD player was not that much cheaper then a PS2, why not get a PS2 that serves both needs (gaming and movie watching.)

Dreamcast will still remain one of my favorite consoles ever. So many awesome games.

Skies of Arcadia - My favorite RPG EVER!! Heroes were awesome but Ramirez is in my opinion the best villain ever! (Sephiroth comes in second)

It had the best world/ setting in an rpg ever. being able to fly around the world finding discoveries and fighting other ships and large monsters.

It handled and perfected so many cliches and gave the game its own identity.

Played Pinta's quest mini game on the VMU alot too.

I have to agree with the poster above that said Dreamcast is getting a little too much attention on this board.

It was a good system, but it had it's flaws. For one thing, the memory cards were a joke. A game like NBA2k or NFL2k took up an ENTIRE memory stick. The controllers, while not terrible, were not on the level of PS2 (of course, I'm a big PS controller fan). The system had a lot of entertaining games... but it had it's shares of shallow games as well. PS2 could also play DvD's... but in fairness, I could play VCD's on my Dreamcast as well.

Now, don't get me wrong, I loved the Dreamcast... but let's not go overboard... and let's not forget the biggest problem with Dreamcast... it's anti-copyright protection (or lack thereof).

Dreamcast was the first system where I could just download games, burn them to disc, and play them on my system without any software or hardware manipulation. I own over 100 Dreamcast games, almost all free... and people wonder why the Dreamcast failed?

I had Jet Set Radio (the jap version) and Jet Grind Radio (the US version).

What's funny is, I actually dated a girl whose father did the vocal translations for the game... man she was a hottie too.

You could do the same thing on the Ps2 with a hard drive, but that didn't hurt them in the least.

what doomed the dreamcast

1. poor exclusives
2. poor third party support
3. last but most important. they switched the awesome sega saturn controller to that crap shoot.

that sega saturn controller is the god of all controllers for fighting games.

And it was also really easy to do this with a ps1, ps2 or Xbox. Your point ?

Taking apart your system and sodering on a mod chip isn't as easy as just dling and burning a game like a music CD.

Now, don't get me wrong, I had my PS1 and PS2 modded (for 30bucks)... but the Dreamcast was on another level of easy to get, free games.

All of my friends with Dreamcast would just borrow my games when they wanted to, something they couldn't do with my PS1 or PS2 games.

I remember the first time I hooked my friend up with some burned Dreamcast games. He didn't believe you didn't have to mod the system or the alter the software, so he actually brought his Dreamcast over to my house to make sure the games would work on his system. :oldlol:

Initially you did need a software boot CD... but crackers quickly learned to just install the bootCD in the downloads.

As for the PS2 HD system... I've never seen anyone with that. I'm not saying it isn't possible, I'm just saying the common person didn't have a HD system for their PS2. I have tons of friends with PS3's... and I'm the only one with a PS3 HD system (my brother has a 360 HD system thanks to me).

I'm not trying to claim bad copyright protection is the only reason Dreamcast failed, but it certainly didn't help. I think the failure of the Dreamcast had more to do with the success of the PS1 and PS2... and the failure of Sega's previous systems. Reputation goes a long way.

Obviously your friends weren't in the know, because I knew nearly 10 people with hard drives on their ps2. Plus myself. It was even easier than the Dreamcast because you didn't have to download anything and you didn't have to burn anything. Just stick a game in and hit copy. It was beautiful.

Dreamcast was cool for a few months, and I'll agree it had some advantages over PS2, but that controller sucked and DVD playback and PS1 compatability ultimately gave PS2 the win. There was also a lot of Sony loyalism going on then since Playstation kicked Saturn's ass most people expected the same for the "next-gen" systems.

But, I wouldn't mind if sega released another console. There were rumors of something called the sega spectrum which was supposed to be shown at E3 but was never shown. If the sega spectrum does turn out to be a console, I may think of biying it. I'm getting tired of Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft.

Had Sega won that console war there'd be no NBA 2k14 or Sonic games etc on any other systems as they were Sega exclusives, Microsoft Xbox may not have been a success, etc and so on.

That system was great, only one to have the playbook thru the VMU instead of onscreen for your opponent to see what play you call in sports games, innovative for its progressive thinking by being able to play online thru the old school modem/ phone line, and a great selection of launch titles like NFL 2k, Soul Calibur, Ready 2 Rumble, (hell I even liked Carrier and it sucked) they just lost so much money by not incorporating a DVD player which was the new "thing" at the time and PS2 capitalized on making PS2 a cheap DVD player/ gaming machine and that catered to the best of both worlds cause customers decided to buy an all in one machine instead of separate devices.

My personal favorite gaming system, that was a good time period.

Almost forgot about Spawn multiplayer, loved that game as well and NBA 2k was the introduction of real shoes on players, loved Iverson in that game!

The reason I never bought another NBA Live game and Madden (until 06 when I had to) was because of Dreamcast.

I remember I bought one in 2001 right when SEGA basically quit and I got the system plus NBA and NFL 2k and Sonic for just $100. It was so good that I convinced my best friend to get one. We played all through freshman year of HS.

I'm a big fan of the trend of rereleasing classic consoles like nintendo did with the nes and snes classic.

I bought the snes don't really use it but I love it as a display piece got a slice of the 90s right there in a glass display two controllers and everything.

they need to do that for me with the gamecube - a gamecube classic with 4 controllers and super smash melee would be legendary

That's not happening any time soon. There is more money in remastering GC games up to HD than there is in releasing a retro console with a bunch of games on it.

It transformed the open-world type of games. You had to work to make money, shops closed at certain times as you navigated through day/nights, certain events were time-based, you had to go to sleep at night. Truly spectacular and real as anything.

Dreamcast was awesome but released at wrong time. Too late to beat down the psx/n64 but also too late because it was no match for ps2.. =[

I need to buy some emulation machine from overseas so I could play all these games on different consoles. I have no interest in the current systems (yeah yeah yeah I got a switch and ps4 that collect dust).

I have my snes mini that I hacked to include more than the lineup of games that came with it. I also bought the ps1 version too, they have been $20 often. I haven't opened it but I hear they are easy as hell to hack. Hell you can buy games on flash drive (who cares if it ain't really legal, smoke ain't a snitch). I miss the older simple games, I remember I tried playing some COD over the summer at my cousins and I was terrible :lol

Of course, I also loved Crazy Taxi, that game was soooo fun.

I had no interest in a nes mini or snes mini, or psx mini, but I do have an genesis mini pre ordered. I especially had no interest in the psx one. Early 3D games have just aged horribly and, frankly, the list of games they put on it are mostly lame as hell anyway. The ones I'd actually want to play you can just d/l on psn. I'm a lot more nostalgic about Saturn from that era anyway.
