Yeah, the people expecting him to be humble and meek obviously don't know the first thing about the guy. I think he was crying because he realized it was the end of the road, more so than it being tears of gratitude. That podium is the absolute last place he wanted to be and he's made that clear for a while now. So, he kept it real. Not sure if he did or not, I kinda doozed off at the end of his speech, but as you see Michael Jordan is in my avatar and he's my favorite player to ever play the game, even though I never saw him play at his most dominant prime in 91', I saw him play in the 2nd 3-peat years, but If he did say Magic wasn't as good as Bird, I wouldn't take it more than a grain of salt. I mean, Jordan is the GOAT IMO, but as far as evaluating talent goes, it's far from GOATness.

That's the only time I've seen MJ cry when he's been honored with something. Usually he holds it pretty well. And that was a fine speech. I'd rather see him keep it candid than prepare something overly formal and not be himself. And when he IS himself he can come off pretty arrogant and full of himself. But how do you avoid that with his career? He's pretty much looked at as the pinnacle of athletic greatness and treated like a GOD. Must be impossible to stay grounded.

My position on Jordan is actually best described by Jordan himself (in an earlier interview today), where he mentioned that calling him the greatest (especially the how the media presents as fact) is just disrespectful to players like Wilt, Kareem and others. To be honest, I've never been more moved by anything basketball related than when he was holding in those tears at the start of his speech.

To be honest, I've never been more moved by anything basketball related than when he was holding in those tears at the start of his speech.

And how hard would it have been for you to say the last part there, leave it at that on the day the man is inducted into the Hall. Instead, up until this point you continue with your anti-jordan agenda. You are a joke.

Jordan is a cocky fellow...And thats good IMO. And a great competetor...Phil talked about Jordan's and Kobe's competitive nature, fear.

I think Jordan is more competitive than Kobe though.

if he came off as "cocky", that's just who he is. i liked that he was honest while explaining what his motivations were. i don't think he really "trashed" anybody. semi-praise for krause, then a semi-jab. it is what it is. 9/10 times MJ will give that sort of speech. he gave his props when due, to guys like dean smith, thompson, pipp and his family.

The thing is Jordan never said he felt he had to prove stuff to people. I was surprised he admitted that was part of his external motivation.

Jordan told it like it was though, and I was surprised before he gave it. Damn, falking awesome "how you like me now" speech.

Man, this dude what eat Kobe alive! And, I thought he was competitive!

indeed, that competitive nature is a huge part of who he is. he always used to talk about his brother beating up on him in basketball and he wanted to "prove" to him that he was better. he's faced adversity and it made him stronger. he cried on the bus after the first detroit series loss. from that point on, i think something "clicked", where he said, i don't give a damn anymore! i'm also somewhat glad he brought up the media because those things that he could win a scoring title, but was not a good teammate or could never win a ring was actually said. obviously MJ took it to heart and it became a part of who he is. so if that is "cocky" to you, i don't know. i preferred that he was up front about it.

As happy as I am for Jordan, I wonder how he will fill the void in the second half of his life, because it's pretty obvious that nothing will ever come close to filling that competitive desire quite like basketball did. The man's greatest strengths are also his greatest weaknesses.

Once again, Stockton gets overshadowed and basically dominated by MJ. I was watching some of that Bulls/Jazz game today on ESPN classic from 1997. Every time time, I think that maybe..........maybe the Jazz can really pull it off. Maybe if Malone actually took it to Rodman and the other much smaller defenders instead of settling for jumpers? Maybe if Jerry Sloan's system allowed more freedom for Stockton to shoot the ball. What if/what if/what if/what if.......

The man kept an entire generation of greats ringless. They were all competitive, bloodthirsty freaks, but MJ was simply on a different plateau in that regard that very few people in any competitive setting will ever be able to reach.

Guess what, he was more likely crying because he can't play anymore and keep all the attention on him rather than because he was honored in being inducted.

Oh yeah he will accomplish more in life than any other basketball player, but he won't live forever. Once you're dead, what good does it do him? No sirree he is not my god. Wish he would have been less combative and less arrogant, but hey...i can't complain because I've always wanted to see behind the curtain he was held behind throughout his career. I can say this...it is so fitting that he wore red and black throughout most of his career. :oldlol:

He was funny and he connected with the audience much better than the others and much better than I anticipated. I always thought he was dry, but I see that was just his handlers holding him back. He had several laugh out loud moments but I still felt the need to pull him to the side and say to him, "You won. All these obstacles you mentioned...you beat them all. You've already rubbed it in everyone's faces. They appreciate...even ADORE your efforts. Why rub it in again right now?"

Mentioning the "freeze out" game was cringe-worthy for me because I don't think Isiah, Gervin or Magic deserved that in such a public setting. And he shouldn't have called Jeff Van Gundy the "little guy".

I wouldn't say I disliked his speech. I just don't think it was completely appropriate for the Hall of Fame induction.

I just dont get it :confusedshrug:

When athletes have speeches or give interviews...ppl complain about them not being themselves, robotic and saying the same lines....but when they do speak form the heart and say whats really on their minds...they are called conceited or a jerk....

What I got from the speech is this: I thought he had humor, showed emotion, thanked everyone...I thought it was one of the best HOF speeches ever....it was different and had a twist to it...It wasnt your typical "HOF thank you and Im getting choked up speech..."

And when your the best at anything and can back it up...your allowed to talk a little smack.....

Also...his angle to his speech was his motivation and thats why he talked about the Byron Russell's, getting cut from high school and how his bro and sis tried to compete with him...and tied it back to the angle of his speech..

Granted, it was not organized...but I rather have someone speaking from the heart than on 5 pieces of paper like Sloan did...(not taking anything from Sloan....the dry "old grampa" humor worked well with his speech!)

Jordan has that Biting sense of humor that you just either "get" or don't. I never put Dude on a ridiculous pedestal where he was perfect. In fact, any Jordan defense i've ever noticed here at ISH is based off of "The Game Of Basketball", not how he said good morning to someone.

I remember a while back I made a post stating why Bron will NEVER be better than MJ. Kenny Smith had to explain to him how to be competitive and about the drive to be the best on live tv.

If you have to explain it to somebody then its not in them.

As we all saw last night, MJ is born with it. And its to a level that no other pro basketball player probably ever had.

People seem to be getting upset over people celebrating MJ being inducted into the hall of fame... I don't really get it.

She's not bad, but she's not good enough to receive a holy **** in my opinion. Jordan's daughter though.....whoooo she's gonna be hot as in a few years, I bet she's going to try to pursue a career in hollywood....be a singer or an actress or something. I believe her name is Jasmine Jordan i believe.

i enjoyed mj speech. It felt like his old days when him and gary payton would talk sh!t to each other. I wish more players would do that.

JESUS, Money ... EPIC hotness on your arm, there.

"Limits like fears, are often just illusions."

Could you imagine MJ out there at 50 years old busting people's asses?

Absolutely spectacular post.

I was watching the Jazz/Bulls games a few months back on the Ultimate Jordan DVD thinking, "Oh man, the Jazz are up, I think they can win this." Or, "Malone should've done ____." Obviously I know the Bulls win but there's just something there, something intangible, that makes me not believe it until the very end.

The Bulls dynasty was just incredible, they destroyed the greatest, and kept pushing the usurpers down. If that dynasty never happened, I literally think a different team could've won every year... But because of Jordan none did.

All the speeches were good (Stringer/Sloan went on a little too long). Robinson was surprisingly religious, Stockton was hilarious, and Jordan was exactly how I hoped. He said what he wanted, was emotional, talked some trash, and gave us insight into his life. It was a great ceremony.

Robinson was surprisingly religious

Thought it was common knowledge in the Sports world that David Robinson is a deeply religious man :confusedshrug:

Well yeah, it's just that I hadn't seen him interview or speak for so long I forgot. So it was surprising, since I totally spaced on it. I liked his speech a lot... I feel like he was kind of screwed though. He felt rushed while everyone else went on forever.

His speech was like 10 minutes, if that. All the others were more than double that.
