CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers guard Delonte West was arrested Thursday night near his offseason home in Maryland for weapons possession.

According to the police report, West was charged with at least two counts of handgun on person, and for driving the vehicle in excess of reasonable and prudent speed. He was pulled over on his motorcycle in Upper Marlboro, Md. on I-495.

WUSA, a television station in Washington D.C., reported that West was pulled over at 10 p.m. Thursday for making an unsafe lane change on his motorcycle. The station reported that police said West had two handguns and a shotgun in his possession and was arrested.

West was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 20.

West's agent did not immediately return a message from The Plain Dealer. The Cavs had no comment as they gathered information about the incident.

The team is scheduled to begin training camp a week from Monday.

1) If I'm a player, I'm probably carrying a (legal) weapon fairly often

2) 2 pistols and a shotgun?! He's a spacey dude, maybe he was pretending to be Hiro Protagonist.

3) What exactly do "weapons charges" entail in Maryland? Were they concealed? Unregistered? Was it because of the shotgun?

You gotta be gangsta to pull that off. Probably one on each hip, and then a shotgun slung across his back.

Unless you're a highly recognizable person who's multi-million dollar salary is widely reported in the media that works in an industry that's seen many of your peers specifically targeted for this reason.

An NBA star and former area high school player was pulled over and arrested in Prince George's County on Thursday night after a police officer found he was carrying three loaded guns, authorities said.

Delonte West, a guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers, was driving a three-wheeled motorcycle north on Interstate 95 near Route 214 in the Largo area when he cut off a Prince George's County police officer, authorities said. The officer pulled him over, and West told the officer that he was carrying a handgun in his waistband.

That prompted the officer to call for backup, and investigators found that West was actually carrying three guns: a Beretta 9mm in his waistband, a Ruger .357 strapped to his leg and a shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back, said Maj. Andy Ellis, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department.

West, who is 26 and lives in Brandywine, was arrested and charged with speeding and two counts of carrying a handgun, Ellis said. He was released today on personal recognizance, according to Ellis and online court records.

Ellis said it was unclear where West was going and why he was armed.

Yeah, because I'm going to go rob an NBA player unarmed. Or, even better, because an NBA player will get his own gun out so quickly so as to shoot me before I can even point mine. Well, Eddie House might.

Completely disagree. Hire a security guard or multiple ones. Or avoid areas where you need a gun. I've never once heard a story of a celebrity save their own life with a gun.

Two things can happen if someone you are successful when a gun is pulled. They get killed or someone else does. Either way at least one life is ruined.

See what I mean?

[QUOTE]On October 6, 2006, there were police reports that Jackson and three other Pacers players were involved in an argument with several patrons at Club Rio, a strip club in Indianapolis. Jackson was punched by one of the patrons and was hit by a car, rolling onto the hood. His injuries were considered minor. Jackson says he fired several gunshots from a 9-mm pistol as an act of self-defense. However, prosecutors later said he fired first.[8] Jackson was charged October 11, 2006 with a felony count of criminal recklessness. He served a seven game suspension at the beginning of the 2007

maybe they can outpatient him at johns hopkins, he can get some electro shock therapy and be at the verizon center by noon for team practice followed by individual workouts during the season. georgetown is like 5 minutes from the verizon center, they have some of the best neurological and mental health specialists in the country.

face it cavs fans, he is damaged goods. you might as well wash your hands of him and go all in with boobie. cut your losses. might as well send delonte to washington where he can be nurtured and cared for. maybe one day he will be able to recuperate and be a viable member of society.

Got this off a lawfirm website in Maryland:

"Gun charges are taken extremely seriously since Maryland firearms laws are very strict. Carrying a handgun is a crime that will get you mandatory jail time if you are found guilty.

Carrying a handgun in Maryland without a permit to carry is punishable by a minimum of 30 days in jail, and up to 3 years. (See my MD Handgun possession penalties chart below.) Even if you have a permit in another state, it is not considered valid in Maryland. "

Handgun Charge
Penalty

Handgun—Unlawful wearing, carrying, 1st weapon offense
Maximum—3 years; Minimum—30 days

Handgun—Unlawful wearing, carrying, 2nd weapon offense
Maximum—10 years; Minimum—1 year

Handgun—Unlawful wearing, carrying, more than 2 weapon offenses
Maximum—10 years; Minimum—3 years

Source: http://www.maryland-defense-lawyer.com/MdGunLaws.htm

Delonte possessed 2 hand guns and 1 shotgun.

If he's lucky, they count it as a single offense and he would fall in the first category.

Considering each handgun counts as a separate weapon count, independently of one another, he's going to fall in the second category for the 2 handguns and not counting the shot gun.

If they do count the shotgun, he falls in the third category.

He has been charged with two counts of gun possession and several traffic citations, although those charges could be amended, Copeland said. According to Maryland criminal law, having an unlicensed handgun can carry a fine of $2,500 and/or up to three years in prison.

"We are aware of the situation and take this matter very seriously," Cavs general manager Danny Ferry said in a statement. "We have been in communication with Delonte and his family. We are gathering more information and will not have further comment until the appropriate time."

West's agents did not immediately return a message to The Plain Dealer.

West has said he suffers from bipolar disorder and has been open with his battle with mood swings and depression. Last season he left the Cavs for several weeks during training camp to get treatment for depression and was on medication at the time.

Copeland said West cooperated with police and did not require or receive any medical attention. He has been released on his own recognizance and has a court date set for Nov. 26.

It was not yet clear if West would be cleared to travel to Cleveland when the Cavs open training camp on Sept. 28

we all know delonte is good. but he has issues. dominic has been squeaky clean and a nice rotation player, he is just behind two great forwards.

bring delonte back to dc!!!!!!!!

Well I'll just let your words speak for themselves.

It has nothing to do with his right to, it's about common sense. Having the right to bear arms is an important right, but it doesn't mean you should carry your weapon with you. There is no reason to (recreation\hunting aside). A gun is good home defense, not self-defense.

Having a gun on you is much more likely to end someones life then save your own.

It's too bad common sense and a little tact aren't guaranteed to you int he constitution.

I'd honestly be more worried about his mindset than legal problems at this point. He's a man who suffers from depression, who felt the need to drive around with three unlicensed handguns, one a shotgun. That's not normal. Although this board felt that Beasley sending out messages like a suicidal 15 year old to all his twitter friends was perfectly normal, so what do i know.

not if they were illegal. Taking loaded weapons that are illegally owned to or from a gun range means you own and are transporting illegal weapons. its different if he had a home permit and you are claiming ignorance that he didnt know he couldnt transport them, but its not the case.
