Well his voice wasn't annoying and his flow wasn't retarded, lyrics were avg (slightly avg at best).

Nothing special to be honest, that would be a sub par song for most top rappers, but good for avg rappers, but overhyped considering the self proclaimed GOAT.

see, i didn't have any major problem with that off the first listen. im surprised swizz put that together. i like the beat and it wasn't really wasted.

He actually had some nice lyrics (mostly punchlines) at some point, but they were ghostwritten for him. The problem was, his horrid voice, simple flow and delivery.

Although I understand he was trying to be different and was constantly experimenting and changing his style, it really didn't sound good at all.... very painful to hear.

And I tried (just like you are) many times to see why he was hailed so much.

The most positive thing I came up with was he was pushing boundaries. But even some will argue that he's not completely original as his fans claim to be, and his schtick of being an alien or different (something cited by some of his fans) actually dates back to Bambataa and the Zulu Nation, and not to go to far we have examples of that with Kool Keith aka Dr. Octagon and even voice alteration such as Quasimoto aka Madlib... just to name a FEW of the top.

But more importantly, most will cite extreme swagga jacking Hova (the irony) and of course the ghostwriting that was done for him by Cudi.

he is a full blown success. nobody is disputing that. i am really just trying to identify the appeal as dondadda is, unless he was just jabbing away at wayne :lol . i am trying to pinpoint why what some people feel is so great about him, i feel is so annoying. when i listen to this new wayne stuff, i listen to the lyrics closely. i always end up asking myself, how the hell did he go from that word to this word, then go back and do all types of gimmicky word play.. i usually have to turn it off. but again, i am trying. show me brans, show me the way of the wayne.

Its fine that you guys like him, we have no problem with that at all. Anybody can enjoy who they want. Just don't try to tell us how great he is, or we'll be forced to be honest and tell you how he isn't and how overrated he truly is.

Most of his rhymes aren't even metaphors, but similes. And like you mentioned, they usually don't connect to anything, they're just there.

For instance, one can take a Pharaoh Monche line out of context and say.. "See that was a simple simile" but when taken into context you'd see how he used it to connect it to another line and was part of a verse, so looking at it within its context and flow its becomes clever.

Wayne rarely does that, which is why today's rappers are known as PUNCHLINE rappers.

They usually just spit a punchline for the sake of it, not really segueing to anything else.

I liked the Carter 3 immediately when it came out. I remember youtubing the shit out of that album...Every.Single.Track. Carter 2 had a few songs that were cool and Carter 1 didn't really have any SONGS (Just rapping, too boring). So out of the first 2 albums...It's like 40 songs and 5 were actually listenable. Carter 3 was full of "songs" (besides maybe a few), catchy and playful, some witty lyrics, etc. Nice to listen to. Not goat, not near it. But he put out songs that I blasted on repeat. Carter 3 took over that summer for me.
