View Full Version : the offical stranded on a dessert island entertainment package

here is the scenario. you are banished from your homeland and sent to a desolate micronesian island where there will always be enough food, water etc to survive. you will be alone for the rest of your life. forever. for-ev-errrrr.

however, because god is great, he tells you that he will allow to bring a number of things with you to occupy your time. you are given a big TV with DVD/Audio all that and a nice old school boombox. no computer, no connection to the outside world.

then he tells you... my son, you have been banished, but i love you. i will allow you to choose what entertainment you may have for the rest of your life. there will be no porn. no video games. no magazines.

however, you may choose from your favorite films, books and cds as is. you can not create mixes and matches. another however, you may get 10 of one type of media, 7 of another, and 3 of another. so you may choose 10 books, 7 cds and 3 films. or switch up the categories. this is your destiny.

do this in memory of me, amen.

that is the setup. i think what people choose will show alot about them. i am interested to see what certain posters will say. i will work on mine in a little bit. after i walk my dog.

edit: big books, double cds, long ass movies are ok. just not like the beatles box set or something.

I'll do 10 books, 7 CD's and 3 films.

10 books because if I could read one paragraph a day. It would take me several years to read a book and would occupy my time. I would take the Led Zeppelin catalog, of course. The three films would be hard, though.

Unforgiven
Taxi Driver
the Hustler

Hmmm, yep. I'm satisfied.

I'd bring 10 books that I wouldn't mind rereading, such as Lord of the Flies, Digital Fortress, Angels and Demons. (I can't think of all 10 right now.)

I'd bring Kickin' it Oldschool, You Don't Mess With The Zohan, and Billy Madison, and a few more that I'll edit in sooner or later.

I'd bring Encore, Relapse, The Warm Up.

so you want god to just give you 10 random books? dont leave it in his hands, he will give you lil bo peepp or some trash. you won't get to read your beloved anton la vey. just name 3 books and i will accept that. taxi driver is definitely in mine.

I've considered that, and I'll probably stop watching the movies when I grow tired of them. However, I've had to reread LOTF twice for school and I wouldn't mind reading it again. The same goes for the rest of the books that I picked. I'd probably spend more time reading than watching the movies or listening to music.

Eminem and Lil wayne aren't my favorites. However, I can have them on reply on my iPod all day and I wouldn't get tired of them. Well, Wayne might start to annoy me, but I can listen to Em all day.

Edit: I'll add J.Cole to that list and I'll take Wayne off. I don't mind replaying him.

How is that not to your liking? Letting someone pick books for you is actually a harder task then picking your own. I'm putting faith in God [this will be the only time I do that], to pick three books that I will enjoy.

I ain't mad atcha. good stuff, if you really want to read the Iliad and the Odyssey a bunch of times you got my respect. don quixote is one of my favorites, i love it when he is swinging on the windmills. swinging meaning sword swinging if i remember correctly.

i love me some shawshank.. i think it has good replay value. when i see brooks dangling i always tense up.

im not familiar with the music but it looks to be motivational or christian as your posting persona indicates.

good job man, thanks for putting in the effort.

Okay first and foremost hit me up with a silly album that just throws you back to good times. I'm talkin' about some Mark Morrison Return of the Mack, Mystikal - Been soo long or a Limp Bizkit - Nookie type album-piece. Prime for remindin us of the foolz that we r. I'd do pullups on the trees, and chuck spears and swim to this.

Alongside comes a serious quality for artistic purposii. I'd rock either an MJ, Pink Floyd, Weezer, Metallica or Radiohead Greatest Hits. Something with strong variety and redeemable value.

A classical album too... Mozart or Aaron Copland. Would love to hear this while preparing the daily activities for survival.

Books-wize def gotta go with an epic fantasy. Count of Monte Cristo all day err'day. Dude is in a damn deserted island for phucks sake, how'm i supposed to deny him a chance if he'z been thru what I've been thru? Umm I REALLY enjoy Shakespeare and I'd prob go with Othello or Hamlet and try to imitate the iambic pentameter in the fingers w/ sand. Go with a nice dark novel cuz I love monsters and feeling scared kinda dismisses boredom a bit. Some Stephen King sheeyat, either It or The Stand. A Walter Dean Myers inspirational story like Fallen Angels. Some cute collection of limericks or satires. And last but not least the Ramayana, TorahQur'an, and Bible.

i'm pretty sure the thinking amongst everybody in this thread will be: take the highest number of that with which you will be able to spend the most time, and take the lowest number of that with which you will be able to spend the least time.

i'm jumping on the bandwagon with everybody else and prioritizing books first, music second, and movies third.

now lets see.

books:

rand - atlas shrugged (no question there - possibly the most explosive book i've ever read)
plato - the republic (in case i miraculously spawn kids, i'll need to construct a just society - also to put ayn in her place)
rousseau - the discourses (love his writing)
tolstoy - war and peace (haven't read it, but a safe bet methinks)
dostoevsky - the brothers karamazov (same as above)
bram stoker - dracula
rowling - hp and the deathly hallows (shut up)
o henry - collected short stories
jon stewart - america: a citizens guide to democracy inaction (for yucks)
some stephen king type mystery thriller - maybe the stand or it or something along those lines

edit: actually, i just saw the bible. that might be a fun one, just for kicks. more humour in there than stewart has to offer, that's for sure. ;)

albums (all vinyl, assuming i can have them replaced if they get scratched)

cannibal ox - the cold vein
nas - illmatic
pink floyd - wish you were here
herbie hancock - head hunters
girl talk - feed the animals (for one man dance parties)
zeppelin - mothership (only because i don't want to choose one album, and it's a double)
a classical piece that i haven't decided on, and likely won't decide on for another 10-15 years

yeah, i have yet to get into classical, but i'd take one just on the assumption that my music tastes would continue to evolve. probably a safe bet.

movies

once upon a time in america (original version, for all, what, 6 hours?)
the big lebowski
the dark knight / the matrix (can't decide)

yeah, that would probably suffice. i'd still get bored though. can i bring some juggling balls?

good, good stuff. i have a strategy that i am still adapting to my plight. but your choices make great sense. the holy books surprise me, you are a complex young man.

gotta get some classical music. calms you down when you are digging for some kind of protein. it would either calm you down or make you crazy on some clockwork orange type shti.

shakespeare eh. good stuff i guess. i would look at like short story compilations personally some kurt von or something. short, classic type stuff.

ain't no shamez in ya gamez on the low tho.

Studying Rousseau and his writings was fun in AP Gov in HS. Had to write reports on Locke, Hobbes, Montesqiue, and Rousseau.

damn vap, universe in a nutshell or brief history of time (or briefer history of time) or anything along those lines is tempting. i might replace rousseau or stewart or stoker with a hawking book.

i'd tear those pages out, write some 'save me' notes on them, and send them off to sea in a bottle. then god would punish me for disobeying him and take my girl talk. and i'd cry.

i suppose i could see myself going with goblet or half blood. the first three are two short though - you'd finish each of them in a single day without a second thought. at least you could put a few more hours into her later (and longer) efforts.

the one thing i would make sure of is to stay the **** away from order of the phoenix. nobody wants to read about harry whining for 700 pages.

man, you totally jacked the republic from me. i am keeping it there anyway. i will be my own philosopher/king.
i'd learn to talk myself into contradicting myself using circular questioning, and then talk myself into contradicting myself again in the same fashion so that i agreed with myself, and then do that again and again endlessly until i had agreed and disagreed with myself so many times that i forget what the original question was. then i'd start again.

i only read it for the first time last year, but it was the most exciting philosophy i've ever had the pleasure of diving into. obviously primarily because of the format, but its a wild exploration that they undertake. i'd take socrates as my all-powerful king over stephen harper as my (somewhat) restricted prime minister.

i read that hemmingway you posted in the reading thread, and i hadn't come across it before. am i honestly supposed to connect that to abortion without being told to? really? i'm honestly curious as to whether hemmingway told people what it was about, or whether they just made a leap of faith / great guess. because that's some incredibly abstract ****.

reading and reenacting the republic on an island would be tough.. socrates needed plato and plato needed socrates, you would be lost in your own personal see of confusion, not knowing or remembering what your point was. you could always guzzle some hemlock.

the white elephants is also got some real deep classical metaphorical meaning.. like they are rare and when you see it you kinda look at yourself and stock in what you are doing... like an abortion. i want people to read stuff like that, not dan brown. who gives a **** what he is babbling about. there is much better stuff out there to read but i digress.

but..... abstract then becomes the reality, alcoholics like to call it a moment of clarity.......

i've never been a part of the dan brown (and those like him) dissing campaign. i think there's a place for his work. blatant and in your face and, err, 'sh!tty' writer though he may be, he writes some pretty good page turners. mind you, i'm basing this off reading da vinci code and angels/demons when i was 15-16, so maybe i'm remembering wrong. but i do recall churning through that book like no tomorrow. it didn't give me anything to ponder about afterward, but it kept me entertained throughout. sometimes art, as i'm sure you heard, can act as a nice escape.

what would be cooler is if you could fit a whole plethora of themes into that story. that would be neat. this... i'm sure i'd appreciate it more if i studied it in depth with a professor, but what strikes me is that he took a story that *could* have been blatant (perhaps not as much as brown, and likely more poetic, but still) and just stripped it entirely of everything that might give the reader an idea of what the **** is happening - EXCEPT for a bare bare minimum. but then, i haven't exactly thought a ton about the imagery of the white elephant - considering its the title of the story it has to have some significance (perhaps the unborn child?) - so i'm using hyperbole to get my point across. it's neat, but at the same time doesn't strike me as anything genius.

here we go, this is me pouring myself into a thread.

When I choose my books I want a mix of excruciating, difficult dense reading and shorter more crisp flowing writing.

1) So the first book is the political philosophy book I have revisited countless times. It is like a big phonebook with the original text and minor discussion on Plato,Marx, Machiavelli, Kant, Hume, Mill all those guys. That would keep me busy for years.
2) Next I would get the collection of short stories from my favorite boozer and the complete works of ernest hemingway. Top 3 writer to me, his works truly are a movable feast.
3) Next book is the last gift my brother gave me, Great Short Stories of the Masters, featuring some of my favorites like Kafka, Twain, Joyce and even that peachy ***** Virginia Woolf.
4) James Joyce stream of consciousness is some ill shti. If I could only choose one joyce, it would be Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man

i've got 'death in venice' sitting on my bookshelf, recommended to me by my sister. she took a lit class on the dark side of hollywood, and that, along with movies like sunset boulevard and mulholland drive, was part of the list. i'll have to crack it open soon.

and man... the graduate was very very close for me. and now that i think about it, mrs robinson parading around in... yeah, i'd be very close to switching out my action choice (matrix/tdk) for that one. absolute classic. pulp fiction and goodfellas also have a ****-ton of replay value, so good calls there.

american politics? on an island by yourself? booo.

mad unique lamar doom. the only one so far to hit up that format. its not like any choice of how to structure your package is wrong, it is just that you are the first to break it down like that.

any kurt von is the ****. i remember little about breakfast of champions or welcome to monkey house. definitely stuff to catch up on .

BARAKAAKAKKAKAKAKKAAAAAAAAAA!

you are the man. no doubt about it, mad props for hitting up that cd format. i don't know if it works under the stringent rule, but who cares, all that stuff is amazing that you listed. the funny thing is, i love your movies, but i took a completely diametrically opposed view of how to do it. good stuff. no bill murray on an island.. i would go insane. more so.

i really appreciate you doing this. thanks.

the most unique list i would say.

people who have already posted like vapid who i am looking forward to seeing what he puts, i will have a little commentary at some point. thanks guys.

yeah, some people are like that. but his list works in my opinion. you would just be watching the movies alot.

in mine, i tried to make sure the movies had good soundtracks. i could stop and start if i really wanted to hear stuff. look at this scene in the graduate thogh...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYbu6Qp_5Uw&feature=PlayList&p=A6222EE2E7F595A2&index=30

einstein would be proud of that montage. it is still mad stylish and got a fresh flair. the songs were written for the movie so it really works well. that is my favorite 5 minute scene of all time. it shows the passage of so much time, so much building and falling of a relationship.. he jumps into the water, jumpcut to him on top of milf.. it is just well done. really well done. if you really look at the film, and that clip, it is so huge to setting the tone of the rest of the film.

yeah your list is nice. i don't know what you are gonna do with a julia child book besides go insane, or use it to supplement booty talk. i need to hear her voice to truly get one off.

things fall apart is more slept on then feather pillow. i guess it is too ethnic for this white mans world.

nice music, i can't see a hole. 3 booty talks would get repetitive. you should get 1 mr. chews or asian, 1 booty talk, 1 8th street latina greatest hits type deal. gotta keep it fresh.

i know this black guy who says he doesn't like booty talk because they all look beat up and fresh off the street. there is better more refined black outlets for booty worship.

Cookbook gives me a little more variety in my meals. I was gussing you would allow us sustenance but not give us lavish dishes. THis gives me something to do and improves my lifestyle.

I would be content just studying Buddhist/Confucian texts for the rest of my days. Thats what I plan to do anyways when I get old.

tell me about this atlas character who has the propensity to shrug.
quote from the book:

"Mr. Rearden," said Francisco, his voice solemnly calm, "if you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling, but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of this strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down on his shoulders - what would you tell him to do?"

"I... don't know. What... could he do? What would you tell him?"

"To shrug."

it's a pretty radical piece of work, but at the same time, wild concepts are brought into the limelight that i, at the very least, had never regarded closely enough or with enough importance. it's about the modern greats of the world, those who make progress 'go', those who carry everybody else with them no matter the cost - if only (taking "only" lightly here) because they believe in the hero that is man, because they believe that his rational capacity for reason is destined to make the world his bitch, to improve himself and separate himself from all other entities and dominate as is his natural course - its about these greats being subjugated to a corrupt system of government that exploits them for the sake of those who produce nothing and move nowhere. its about self-assurance of the heroes who wield no more power than what their intellects can produce vs doubt of the villains who wield no more power than what they can coerce out of those who produce via their intellects. its about living through and for yourself vs living through and for others. achievements based on self-love and greeds vs avoidance of failures based on self-hate and altruism. the atlas metaphor, a pretty profound one in my eyes, is a hint to the course of action the "minds of the world" decide to take - basically, while trying not to give away too much of the book (but still a major portion), concluding "**** everybody but me". sounds selfish? it is.

she's got some pretty misplaced conceptions that are criticized, and actually laughed at, by most scholars. but its still an incredibly intense read that brings to light a great deal of self-contemplation that is generally ignored regarding the individual. not to mention her writing, while occasionally wordy and (often, and consistently criticized as) extremely repetitive, is absolute gorgeous. in my opinion anyways.

beware of the 60 page speech at the end though. took my three sittings to read through that, although i've since read it a few more times. it gets messy at points, but its more or less a breakdown of rand's philosophy, which again is more or less a laughing stock in the academic world.
