Yea, a woman brought one to my dads office when I was young. I even got some pictures taken with it. A couple years later the damn thing ripped off one of her arms when it got pissed. Some animals need to be left in the wild.

http://www.esquire.com/features/chimpanzee-attack-0409-3?src=digg
As St. James confronted the chimp, the six-two former running back turned to find a second chimp — also a male, this one older and bigger — bearing down on him as well. With both hands, he pushed the bigger animal. Both chimps pounced. One of the animals grabbed him in a bear hug before chomping into the bone above his right eyebrow. He then stuck his finger in St. James's right eye, gouging it out. The same animal clamped his teeth onto St. James's nose, biting it off, as the other chimp chewed away at St. James's fingers. In the melee, one of the chimps dug in his claws and ripped the skin off the right side of St. James's face, causing it to flop over and cover his left eye, temporarily blinding him. One of the primates sunk his teeth into St. James's skull. He then closed his jaws on St. James's mouth, ripping off his lips and most of his teeth. St. James tried to put one of his hands down the animal's throat, but the chimp just kept chewing on it and chewing on it, and he couldn't get it out.
St. James fell to the ground, no longer able to defend himself, and for at least five minutes, the mauling continued as he lay helpless. One of the chimps gnawed on his buttocks and bit off his genitals. They ravaged his left foot, leaving it shredded. Blood poured from his body, and LaDonna was screaming. It looked as if they were eating him alive.

Her friend had a pet chimp that was basically like a son to the woman. She had it for many years without a single incident of aggression. Nash (the woman who was attacked) was also very close to the chimp. In fact, on the morning in which she was attacked, I believe she was bringing the chimp a new toy.
I've heard reports that Nash had a new haircut which may have thrown the chimp off and given the appearance of being someone else that he didn't know. The truth is, we will never know for sure what set off the attack.
At the end of the day, chimps should not be held as pets. The cops ended up shooting and killing the animal on arrival, because they couldn't get it to stop and I think it actually went after them in a blind rage. As brutal as the attack was, I can't help but to feel sympathy for the animal. It was just doing what came natural for a wild animal. I've read that, after it was shot several times, it ran into the house and onto a jungle gym that the owner had set up and where it felt most comfortable. They found it dead, hanging from the top.
It had to be like, "WTF is going on..."
Just a tragedy on all sides.... And there is a lesson to be learned, here. Wild animals need to stay in the wild.

I have no problem with certain animals taken from the wild as pets - Iguanas, Tatantulas, Llamas, etc. My only problem, don't house a wild animal that is capable of physically destroying you. An animal like that is way too strong to be living with.

You ever watch the Strongest Man competitions that they show on ESPN sometimes? A lot of those guys look 'fat,' by just doing the eye test. Yet, they are the strongest people on earth. That chimp has the strength of 10 men. It would rip your arms off and beat you with them with very little effort. They are literally pure, animalistic muscle.

What if you saw a chimp doing this to someone you knew? And you know full well that if you try to get involved it could do it to you? Do you try to help or do you just stand there and fumble with your cell phone to call for help while this person is shrieking in agony and getting their face mauled?

There is really nothing you can do unless you have a gun. The woman who owned the chimp that attacked Nash stabbed him in the chest with a butcher knife and it just made him more aggressive. Your best bet is to call the police.

This was like two towns over from me. A huge deal around here. The cops were having trouble bringing it down even. It pinned one cop back into his car, then went around to open the other door when the cop locked himself in.
Listening to local traffic and news on the radio that day was surreal. There was traffic backed up because a wild monkey had occupied a good chunk of the local police force, and had torn a woman to shreds. Sounds like a joke when you hear it on the radio.

I have this nightmare every so often that someone in my family falls into pond or a lake that has this killer alligator in it... and of course there is absolutely nothing I can do.
I don't know why this reoccurring nightmare happens... but it is the absolute worst feeling ever.
I guess the only thing you can do in a situation like that, is assess how badly your friend has been attacked... and make a quick judgement if you want to try to sacrifice your own life in hopes that the animal will attack you instead.
If it's your own child or wife you have no choice but to die. Anybody else I would be hesitant.

When this whole incident happened, it led me to learn more about chimps than I had known previously. What I found out was that this kind of episode is entirely common in the wild when it comes to chimps showing aggression to other chimps. The first thing they do is attack the face, genitals and hands. They find dead chimps that have been bludgeoned by other chimps from other 'clans' often in the wild.
There are literally chimp gangs that fight one another on the regular in the jungle. They are very violent creatures (sort of like their cousins... humans).

Yeah, I take an anthropology class and we're learning about primates and my professor made it seems like they were peaceful animals almost. Just seemed like they attacked smaller animals, which is why I was surprised..and to think all this time I was thinking to myself how I could probably take on a chimp or something :lol I guess I was wrong.
Do they attack when provoked or do they do it at random, maybe since they don't come in contact with humans that often, they attack out of fear?

Like I said, it is usually an effort to assert dominance. But, they can also be wildly unpredictable. I definitely wouldn't want to be around one regardless of how docile they seem. They are just too damned dangerous and too wild.

Well, dogs are dangerous too, so are snakes. But we find ways to make them not so dangerous: By neutering & vaccinating or taking out the snake's fangs/poison. Yet, a lot of people are killed each year by these domesticated animals.
Chimps need to be at least neutered. It will make em much less aggressive.

As Reef pointed out, though, Silverbacks are pretty laid back animals. They avoid conflict if possible, unlike chimps.

I remember reading an article on Tyson when he was at the zoo. He offered the zoo keeper 10 grand to go in the setting with their silverback gorilla and fight it.

gorillas have ridiculous bone density in comparison to humans .. tyson would break his hand ...

Wow... The only reason he offered was because he knew that they would never allow it. If a Silverback felt threatened, it would rip Tyson in half with little to no effort.
As Reef pointed out, though, Silverbacks are pretty laid back animals. They avoid conflict if possible, unlike chimps.
Don't doubt Tyson's stupidity... :oldlol:
Honestly check out the strength of the Silverback in this video. Drags a 200lbs man with no problem. Must have been a frightening experience.

I have a friend who worked in a zoo and she told me that a 120 pound female chimp would pick up these steel rods and bend them in half with ease, something 2 big ass dudes could barely do

Really puts things in perspective. You think you got problems when you get your heart broken, or you lost your job. That woman had her face torn off.

I can't even imagine...
That thing is f#cking humungous and scary... Looks like King Kong.
This guy out in the middle of the country relatively close to my hometown has a small black bear named 'Dewey' that lives in his backyard in a big enclosure. He allows people to just come to his house and see him. His claws and front teeth have been removed (which I found absolutely despicable), so he isn't as dangerous as he would normally be.
Anyway... Me, my brother and friends drove out one day to hang with Dewey. He is hilarious... We brought him a 2-liter of Mountain Dew and he reached through the cage, grabbed it from us and chugged it (that is why he is named 'Dewey'). He got a crazy energy burst after drinking the soda and wanted to play. My brother, who was a Division-I wrestler at 190 pounds, stepped up to the cage and Dewey reached through the bars and grabbed his leg, completely stunning him, as he was unable to move.
I gave it a try and he did the same thing... Reached through the cage, grabbed my leg, and totally incapacitated me. He was just playing, but it was still kind of scary. He could have ripped my leg off if he wanted to and this was 'only' a 250-pound black bear.
I can't imagine what that giant gorilla would do if provoked. I definitely wouldn't want to find out.

Yes.
Thanks for reminding me of this.
You really do need to evalute how small your problems in life really are when you compare it to the pain and suffering that a large portion of global population are dealing with.
You think you have problems?
No... those are selfish problems.

Yes Gorrila's are super strong, but at the end of the day, any of some of the dangerous animals would cause a lot of damage. I think some remember that Tiger Zoo attack.
But whether it be a Gorilla, Tiger, Lion, Bear, you are done.

I said this too... But only about 17 people would be left alive. (That's my guess)
I figure The Gorilla would take down about 30 people, and the Steelers would have to put together a good game plan on how to take that beast down.
I changed my mind... That Silverback would slaughter them... all of them.
You're delusional. If it was a Mad Grizzly Bear, then it would be close, but the Steelers would take out that Gorrilla. Though obviously 1on1 it's not a challenge.

Im all for exotic pets and all...but if you want a damn monkey, your better off just busting out a kid.
She probably spoiled that thing rotten.
The only reason to get a monkey pet is for thumb wrestleing, other than that leave the poo chuckers in the jungle.

Wow cool story.
Yeah, I don't know what it is that makes a 90-120lbs chimp for example so much stronger than us, or like your example a 250lbs bear.
I really think it does have to do with "animal instincts" and essentially adrenaline. Animals have no bearing of moral/amoral, and I think this is what essentially allows them to have that incredible strength in such a blinding rage. Where as humans, hardly ever are able to shut that sense of moral/amoral out...
Though we've all heard of humans lifting cars and whatnot to save others...

Man **** that. I saw Congo when I was a kid, and have never trusted our primate relatives since then.
And a chimp is much smaller than the killer gorillas from Congo (or regular gorillas since the ones in Congo don't actually exist to my knowledge), correct?
If chimps ever try to attack or a zombie plague breaks out or something, I'm gonna be ****ing thrilled that I watched all those movies and have knowledge of guns and weaponry and what not. I wonder if there would be zombie chimps. That'd be ****ed.
