But seriously, what's with this near obsession the media has w/athletes being well spoken & smooth? That shyt is pretty stupid. Sure, companies need these guys to sell product, but that shyt is pretty meaningless to me. :confusedshrug:

WTF do his stats have to do with the way he talks?! I didnt deny his stats, he is a great player, doesnt mean he doesnt sound like a spastic when he opens his mouth. And it is meaningless, doesnt mean he cant be talked about.
LeBron wearing #6 nnext season doesnt mean anything, whether we can dunk on a 10' rim is meaningless. Derrick Rose not being able to speak doesnt matter, its just an observation.

I luv Rose to death but I am certain they needed to do many takes while instructing him to speak clearly to get that clip. I don't believe that Rose is dumb, but he is a perfect example of an athlete that would have benefited from another year of college. A choice of a communication/broadcast major would have been very helpful to his future endorsements.

D-Rose is certainly not stupid or retarded by any length. It is just that he like many other ballers before him saw basketball as plan A and his education took a back seat to that. Can't hate on him for that but I can't help but think what a difference another year as a Tiger would have done for him holistically.

The problem is your focusing on the things in life that don't really matter. When I was a kid I had hopes and dreams. We all did. But over time, the daily grind gets in the way and you miss the things that really matter, even though they are right in front of you, staring you in the face. I think the next time you should ask yourself "Am I on the right track here?". I don't mean to be rude but people like you I really pity. So maybe you could use the few brain cells you have and take advantage of the knowledge I have given you now. Good luck.

I hate when people claim athletes lose out on so much education-wise by leaving school early. I seriously doubt these people have actually attended college. Most classes that I had that ever included a starter-level athlete who played either basketball, football, or baseball was barely ever attended by that player. Often times you only see them for exams (if then) and somehow they got the best paying work-study jobs that allow athletes from the poorest parts of the state to have some of the nicest cars on campus. This doesn't even mention the endless groupies that flock to these star players.
Derrick Rose may not be a good talker, but I have the outcome would be the same even had he stayed another year in college.

thats stupid, learning to speak correctly is not something you learn in college.
it has to be something you learn much earlier. and if you have to learn it late in your life, you dont need college for it

At least he's not one of them illiterate hood talking idiots that speak ebonics on a level nobody knows wtf they're saying. I swear half the kids from Baltimore talk another language that you need a translator to understand. Watching Chris Johnson give an interview yesterday was painful.

Actually, I think Rose is a good talker around his boys, peers...I think they understand him very well, he probably reverts to his natural swag...But with the Cameras, it seems like he's thinking before he talks and is trying to speak more proper...I mean, iv'e had to readjust my speech when i switched between talkin to the homies and talking to a Howdy Do stiff for a Job interview...

Actually he is a retard and he is stupid, he couldnt even pass the SATs-how sad is that you need like 900 to pass and get 600 points for signing your name-he had to have someone sit in on the test for him to get into Memphis. If any player in the league is actually retarded, my money would be on Derek Rose.
A.M.G.
11-16-2009, 05:29 PM
Rose will learn to talk. I remember Brandon Roy was virtually unintelligible when he came into the league (more from speaking way too fast than from inarticulateness), and he seems to have corrected that.
Yes, right now with Rose in interviews it's a lot of "Ummm yeah we umm... did good and ...played you know um hard... team... we um are ummm..." but I don't actually think he's mentally challenged, as his inarticulate mumbling style of speech might suggest.
He's just a dude who never paid attention in school because he basically had a golden ticket to the NBA, so he didn't really learn to speak very clearly or develop a vocabulary. Also, he has that kind of "I don't give a ****, I'm ****ing amazing" attitude, where he just kind of has a blank look on his face almost all the time.
He might be the worst interview in the league right now (among major players), but I'm sure he'll develop a personality and learn how to talk.

I think he's shy and doesn't have confidence being in front a camera. As Branloski said you can see him thinking sentences over before he delivers them. When he did the interview with Ahmad he was ok and totally understandable. There is a regional accent but President Jimmy Carter had one of those.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHdciNDeisA&feature=related
You all catch a bad moment and go to town with it. He can express himself and elaborate at 22yo. Tim Duncan rarely elaborates but nobody says anything because he has 4 years of schooling. Larry Bird the same. For some people their comfort level is just not to talk alot or they prefer talking to only a couple of people at a time and not the cameras. He gets older he will probably get a speech coach. He can afford it. And trust me, yall got some bad moments coming and when it does think of how you judged others.
To the haters that are brining up the SAT scores and such... he's living his life doing the thing he loves most while being one of the best on the planet at it and getting paid like crazy, and you are stuck on a SAT score??? Some schools simply don't prepare you well for the SAT. But life and career is waaaaay more important. Don't get your priorities mixed up.

I ripped on him a ton while he went to Memphis. Literally 30% of his vocabulary was "you know". He's gotten a lot better at it. Not great but you can tell he cares to improve. He's also smart enough to not use words beyond his understanding...

Rose is retarded. The only way he got through school is because he's a top athlete who was allowed to cheat. In a society where you can make millions with a ball, who needs education?
Have you listened to these guys? Just go listen to an interview with Cousins or another top prospect. How many are well spoken guys like Battier or Fisher?

He's a shy person, that's all. Andre Miller is similar in his interviews too.
He could possibly have some sort of social anxiety or disorder too though like Ricky Williams.

yep, he has. he's a lot more poised. listen, he's a ball player. he isn't paid to be articulate, shill products or make small talk. who cares? he's shy. i found his sunday interview to be particularly humble.
he seems like the kind of guy who'd rather hang out with a couple buddies and play video games than hit the clubs. what is wrong with that and who caressss?

It's been pretty common knowledge that Derrick Rose is dumb as a rock ever since he was at Memphis. I mean he would not have been able to get the minimum SAT score to play (800 lol) ANYWHERE without someone taking it for him. The fact that he can't talk seems pretty irrelevant but it will end up hurting his legacy down the road if he is basically incapable of giving interviews or doing anything other than playing ball. It doesn't seem like a big deal but a big part of basketball is the personalities of the players and Rose has none.
