View Full Version : Do people still pull out their lighters during concerts?

????
I know that during the 80s (specially the 80s) and 90s the audience would pull out their lighters and wave them in the air in unison.
Do people still do that?
Or has it been replaced by cell phones and new laws that prevent this?

I was at a concert a couple years ago and everyone did it. None other than that, but none of the concerts I have been to recently have been the right genre/mood for it.

the cell phone thing is super lame. how the hell does a digital screen replace a living breathing flame?
they did it at the australian pink floyd show i was at last christmas. not the entire crowd, but there were a few of us. mind you, that doesn't exactly reflect on the younger generation, considering most of the guys doing it were in their 40s and 50s. and it sort of stunk because it was in a sports stadium, which always have the worst concert atmospheres.
wasn't it a major 70s phenomenon? thats always where i thought it started.
i saw video of a show not too long ago - it was a prominent rapper, although i forget who. anyways, the entire crowd was barely moving, and most of them were just holding up their cell phones and recording videos of the artist. it was pretty ****ing depressing, needless to say.

its simple, everybody has cell phones + increased security is probably making people worry about bringing things like lighters, and I bet its not in most places anyway

It started in the 70s, but took on a life of its own in the 80s, where every act had to have that one song that required a lighter moment.

Uhh, Marlo was telling me something about decriminalizing weed out there. So I assume alot of people would have a lighter out there, especially at a concert.
I can't remember if thats what he said but it was something to do with weed and california.

I really don't think marijuana laws are enforced highly at concerts.
I don't to go to many concerts, but the last one I went to there was weed everywhere and plenty of police officers were there. They did nothing about it and just enjoyed the festivities like everybody else.

This is true. At Cypress Hills Smokeout, everyone lit one up at 4:20pm and there were cops everywhere and none of them did anything. I am sure small amounts of weed will be legal here as early as next year.

Speaking of concerts, this is gonna sound very puss!ish....
I was getting scared when they started bonfires everywhere.
Because if one got out of hand, thousands of people trying to escape wasn't gonna be a good situation to be in.

Those are fun. Always get them at Ozzfest, BIG ones too! Speaking of Ozzy, want a situation at a show that will scare the piss out of you? Forget a bonfire, try having a couple thousand people running at you.
Was at an Ozzy show in the mid 90s at SDSU and we were like 6th row. About 45 minutes into the show, he says he will give backstage passes to whoever came onstage and did the craziest sh*t. Not smart. Started playing crazy train and I actually heard a roar of noise over the music, turned and looked to see about 2k people running at us. Somehow we got pushed over our seats and to the front of the stage before I started throwing elbows and working my way to the side. Luckily we were only 4 seats from the aisle and I got out of it in a few minutes.
People were running onstage while Ozzy was surrounded by security hitting people with mic stands and sh*t, it was crazy. Then people started to get pissed the show was shut down and started to vandalize the campus. When we got out to the parking lot, people were fuc*ing up cars and trying to flip them. Got the hell outta there quick. Made the SD and LA news that night too haha

oh come on. its easy to get caught up in nostalgia, but this sure as hell does NOT qualify. its a flat out fact that a lighter is more magical and emotional and transcendent and solemn and whatever other adjective you want to throw out there than a goddamn iphone application. get real.[/o'reilly]

what sort of set did they do? i saw them do the wall in its entirety, and then close with a few from dark side, and then wish you were here. they're pretty incredible - its the closest thing you'll get to a real floyd show, which we'll unfortunately never get to experience.

I went to a Mobb Deep concert in Boston where everyone held up a lighter during Quiet Storm.

That was going to be my question.
Anyways, for those who dont smoke, do they consciously buy a lighter for the sole purpose of waving at concerts?

The lighters thing was pure 80's cheesy hairband ballad.

That's pretty wild. Paranoia concerning being trampled to death and a handful of instances of temporary tinnitus are the main reasons why I don't go to large concerts anymore.
It is a combo of lighters and cell phones. Cell phones outnumber lighters, but the % changes depending on the musicians.
