View Full Version : Saturday night Greg Oden injured left knee, needs surgery, season likely over

I've tried to watch as many Blazer games as possible and while power dunks and big blocks aren't usual for Greg Oden, I'm wondering if anyone here thinks he still has this kind of athleticism.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8fv810QfY8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9yD3M-pLQk
He's now in better shape than he was in last year and he should just about be recovered from the microfracture surgery. So has he lost any athleticism?
At 1:06 and particularly 1:21 he seems explosive here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZuaIPOAlbk Also at 1:13 here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJEaTPuzVJw
In general he doesn't seem to have as many highlight plays as he did in college, but I suspect part of that is him conserving energy and being careful because of his injury history.

He obviously put on some weight during his time off, but i'm not sure if he can get that explosiveness back, like Stoudemire, unless he really works hard and sheds some weight
rknine15

He's had serious knee injuries, it's tough to get back to how you were(explosiveness) especially with 7 fters. Plus the extra weight he put on.
I believe the drive at 1:21 is a travel.

Dude even the comentators and NBA experts said he LOST some weight from last year.

I think it's the left knee which would not be the one he had surgery on. I don't even really care who wins the game now. One good thing is that it happened in the air. Not by coming down on it akward.
Blazers look to have the the wind knocked right out of them. I think it's as bad as when bynum dislocated his knee.

The bright side is he's still just 21, but man this was dissapointing. He was coming into his own offensively and the defense/rebounding is already elite. Hopefully he recovers well, but he's been injury prone since highschool. I'm rooting for him, though.
And Sam Bowie never had the type of potential Oden does.

Yeh he did, Sam Bowie was like 7'4", and really quick, he could have been like a better Ralph Sampson.

Bowie was listed at 7'1" and he entered the league at 235 pounds. Where did you get 7'4" from? So an inch taller than Oden with 40 fewer pounds(in muscle) with less power and athleticism?

It was contact in the air, as in slamming into aaron brooks leg. This happened already when Oden ran his knee into Corey Maggette and he returned in 3-4 weeks. I'm just saying he didn't hurt it by bringing his weight down on it.

That happened to me once.
Painful. And my knee was swollen like a balloon. They actually drilled a hole in my knee and sucked out the excess blood with a hose while I was awake. Happened on my trip to Austria. Was pumped as hell to go taking a ride down the mountain with these rad ass tiny skiis and then some ******* left a banner lying in the middle and I got stuck w/ one foot. It sucked.
I really like Greg Oden. Such a nice dude that is still young and was starting to beast. He was starting to be one of the best rebounders, blockers and defenders in the league. **** this.

It's like anything that can happen does happen.two things , i doubt you're a large as an nba player? that has an effect, big guys can just have problems, everything, the torque the bumps the twists are all greater due to their size and added length..
secondly you probably don't play with as much abandon as a pro level player, there's a little voice in most folks head saying that's gonna hurt if you screw it up....lol

NBA players are much bigger than the rest of the general population, in Greg's case not only is he tall but he's 280lbs, that's a lot more pressure on your ligaments. Just look at how many big guys 6"8 and up have gruesome knee injuries that guys under 6"4 seemingly don't have to deal with as frequently.

I didn't think Oden was going to be a great xenter. But it is unfortunate that his career is seemingly "over" before it ever truly begins.
Big Z had a lot of injuries while relatively young, then casme back and was really productive. Perhaps Oden can do the same.

on OKC Durant is perfectly happy to defer to Westbrook, and take open spot up jump shots. I think Durant would be perfectly happy to defer to Roy and Aldridge as well and take open jumpers. Durant is not a guy with an ego at all, he just loves playing ball, but doesnt get pouty if he doesnt get shots and doesnt force anything, he's a great system guy.
Roy, Aldridge, Durant actually would have been very good, alot of length.

WTF are you talking about? The "system" is running him through screens and getting him 20 shots a game. In addition, up until this year Durant had been a one-dimensional player who couldn't bring anything else to the table besides scoring. His defense continues to be questionable. You can't just incorporate a young volume scorer into an already established offense without expecting chemistry issues and inflated egos. You can't just manufacture your own Celtics squad---their all-stars are older and hence more willing to sacrifice statistics for a shot at a championship.

His legs look skrawny. Not proportioned to his upper body. Maybe he needs to bulk up down there to support his landing and massive size. It is a bad sign when both legs go out on you so early in your career. His injuries have seemed cases of unprovoked ones.

That's what I meant and it's a shame because he was averaging 27/10 before his injury in the 2006-2007 season. He was playing out of his mind that season. He could have turned into a really dominant center.

He was a beast. just a pure beast. he's been on the decline steadily since the 07 season, but he still is a very good player. it really depends on how he recovers. by all Reports he has done a good job of recovering, but at he's age and size, he'll never be the same. same with Tracy. i think he'll be a better version of 07-08 season now where he finished in the top 6 mvp Vote getters. but the 03 McGrady is gone.

Maybe they still will get him in FA in a few years.
As for this Oden thing, I don't know what to say. I hate to say this, but I have been relieved for the past year and a half when I read a game report, and there are no Oden injuries on it. When I looked at the ESPN Bottom Line during the Nebraska-Texas game, and it said that Oden hurt his knee, I was disappointed, but I told myself that it may not be that bad. Then, I get the report that he is probably out for the year, and I am upset but not shocked.
I want to have a good attitude about this, but this crap needs to stop happening. I wish him luck in his rehab, but I don't want to put a whole lot of thought into him until he can stay healthy and win some rings for the Blazers. This is ridiculous.

To call Oden a bust is ridiculous.
It really is a shame how unlucky he has been in getting injured, but the talent is all there. Oden has proved that he can be a dominant center, and he'll just have another setback that he will have to overcome.

He'll have a career , but even Oden knows now , this isn't good

What would you call anfernee hardaway and grant hill? they certainly weren't successful
I was in Hawaii over the weekend so I just found out about Oden 10 minutes ago. Now I'm depressed......

I wouldn't call them busts. Their careers were disappointing, but my definition of bust is somebody with high expectations that couldn't prove that they were at least NBA starting caliber.

Physically this latest injury probably won't alter Oden's ability much at 21/22 years old, but it does confirm that he's injury prone. Who knows what will happen though? He still has enourmous potential and it's not impossible for him to overcome this injury. Look at Grant Hill.

Greg Oden is 21 years old. Sure he has had major injuries, but he can always come back from them. He has proven, while he's been healthy, to be a dominant center.
It's a shame how all of this has to happen to a GREAT person like Oden. There really aren't many player that are as nice and down to earth as Greg Oden, and it really is a shame that all of this has to happen to someone like him. Can't wait to see him get back out there next year.

Damn, you have to feel for the guy. I sincerely hope he becomes more durable (it seems like his bones and cartilage are as prematurely aged as his face?) and can have a decent career.
I don't know if he needs more calcium or something, or if he just needs to slim down a bunch. But it looks more and more like he will always be injury prone no matter what he does, and because of that he will never live up to being drafted #1 overall.

Slimming down is essential for Oden. He was 257 pounds at the 2007 pre-draft camp, he should try to get down to that range.

he definitely lost a ton of weight from last year to this year. i remember watching some of his summer workout footage of him actually being able to run baseline to baseline pretty quickly. and he did not look like that last year. greg seems like a good guy, i really hope his confidence isn't shot though cause that would be a bigger killer than his injuries.

Well, I'm curious to see how he responds to treatment. By now it's probably routine. Hopefully he can fully recover and stay injury-free next season.
What do Blazer fans think? Are you going to move on and build around Roy and Aldridge? Would you trade Oden if the right deal came along?

Oh, yeah, those 15 titles that you won, mostly with players that were giftwrapped to you by other stupid organizations, not teams that you built through the draft. That is why I can't stand the frontrunning Lakers. You are just luckier than Portland. Saturday night is a good example.

I wouldn't trade Oden for anyone in the league right now except for Lebron and now maybe Dwight Howard.
I said before the 2007 draft that the only trade I'd consider before the draft is for Lebron. Now I think Dwight becomes another player just for the fact that he never gets injured.
I personally want to stick with Oden until his can't play anymore. I want him to stay with the Blazers whether his career is plagued with injuries, or if he never takes us to a title. I really like Greg Oden the person. I know Portland won't even consider trading him unless Dwight or Lebron become available.
I'd rather trade Aldridge.

I still think Oden can be a great player. When next season starts he'll still be 2 years younger than Robinson was and 1 year younger than Ewing was when those 2 first entered the league. He's now shown talent and picked up some NBA experience and this latest injury shouldn't take away from his athleticism as there was no ligament damage. The real concerning thing about it is that it confirms that Oden is injury prone, but that doesn't mean it's a foregone conclusion that he'll never be able to play a season.
What he has to do is lose even more weight, drop down to the weight he was at the pre-draft camp(so probably lose 15-20 pounds more) to take as much pressure as he possibly can off his legs. Yao's injuries also started when he bulked up, but in Oden's case, bulking up was never necessary. He's very strong naturally as we saw in college. Oden should look to be closer to David Robinson's size than Shaq's size.

The thing about that is though, Oden tends to lose A LOT of weight during the season. That was always a huge concern with him while he was at Ohio State, as he lost so much weight throughout the year. I think he came in at a pretty good weight this year, but obviously I would like to see him slim down a little bit to try and stay healthy and get some explosiveness back...

Yeah, but Oden was a teenager at Ohio State, he was probably still growing. Now he's probably done growing and his metabolism should be a bit slower making him less prone to losing weight.
Coming into the season at this weight wouldn't make him too thin.

He still looks like a beast at 260 pounds. He pushed around Joakim Noah and Al Horford at that weight. Any stress he can take off his legs will be a plus.

He might as well try and get down to 255-265. He looked a lot better this year, but the extra weight really doesn't do anything to better his game.
God, I forgot about that preseason dunk. Saw that live and was amazed. Would have truly had a chance to be a dominant center had he not suffered injury after injury. (I still think he has a chance to be good, but I don't think he'll ever reach his potential now)

I just don't see Oden becoming the player many projected he was going to be coming out of college. He's been injured for what... 4 straight seasons now? Even last season he chipped something in his knee. But yes, the first step is to lose the weight. I don't know if he's dedicated himself to healthy eating, but he might as well start now.

LOL at this delusion. Greg has not even proven that he can play at an all-star level. He has only recently shown some promise of being able to do that one day. Sadly that day might never come as it seems that he will always be injured. Even if he recovers, this will no doubt take more athletic ability away and also take time away to retard his growth further. It's a reach to see him as an all-star now. If you can trade him for a legit all-star or a promising future all-star you should do it NOW.
This should end all Bynum/Oden comparisons. Bynum has shown to be able to put up all-star numbers (only because the center position is soo weak) and if he can stay healthy and prove that the previous injuries were true freak accidents, we will have no other questions on his ability.
