View Full Version : 2010 ISH Death Pool
Knuck the Ficks
12-14-2009, 05:26 PM
Hello ISHers it's time to set up the 2010 version of the Insidehoops Death Pool. The 2009 version is still ongoing and can be found here:
http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112830
A few things:
- The points will remain the same, that is: (100 minus Age at Death) for each celebrity on your list that passes. So picking a bunch of really old celebrities may not score you many points.
- I am increasing the number of people you get on your list to 15. The aim is to try and get a clear winner this time round.
- All lists need to be in by 31st of December midnight (I'll allow some leeway but not too much). Like last year you can edit your list as many times as you want up until said date.
- From last year's threads you can see that our lists were all pretty similar. This was because people were influenced by what other people had written down. If you don't want people to view your entry then PM me your list, you'll just have to trust that I won't get any ideas from it
- If you're interested post in this thread so we can get a rough idea of the numbers. I'm not going to run it if there's only 5 people.
- The people on your list have to be famous. Last year someone wrote "Wayne Gretzky's dad". I was never going to give him any points for that. As a rule of thumb if you have a wiki page that requires scrolling to completely read then you are probably famous enough.
- Finally, don't come in here all sensitive and asking for this thread to be deleted. Just ignore it.

I tried to divide my picks into categories:
1. Really old people
2. People with dangerous illnesses/on Death row
3. Foreign political figures with lots of enemies
4. People under a lot of stress: Look for people hit hard by recent financial turmoils and/or political figures
5. People who lead fast/deadly lifestyles
6. Long shot young celebrities that have high risk/return potential due to age
If someone fits in more then one group they are a good candidate in my eyes. Maybe I should have picked more Japanese, their culture is quite morbid at times.
Things to avoid: Evangelical people who have something to live for (spreading their message), vegans.

New Rule:
People with terminal cancer are off the list, unless someone can convince me otherwise (I'm talking with reference to the Lockerbie bomber here).
It sounds like a dick move, but in retrospect we shouldn't have allowed people to include Patrick Swayze this year. Once people saw someone pick him about half of us included him and so his death didn't really change the standings.

Yeah, that's fine.
But unfortunately I won't allow someone who is in the last stages of terminal cancer to be on the list (Again I hate to be a dick, because I wanted this competition to have almost no rules but the Swayze thing ended up being just a whole bunch of wasted picks).
Another rule: you can't put down another poster's name like playtetris did.

Important for WoGiTaLiA1, big baller and future entrants
After some thought I've decided that you can't include the Lockerbie bomber on your list. The Death Pool is a game of chance and there is zero uncertainty surrounding the Lockerbie bomber's fate.
Other death pool's around the web actually forbid picking someone with terminal cancer, so please change that pick.

This week alone, both Japan and Ireland had their respective ministers of finance hospitalized.
Hirohisa Fujii of Japan was admitted Monday for unknown reasons and will stay for around two weeks as he undergoes more tests.
As for Ireland, Brian Lenihan has unfortunately been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
So with these two titans of money out of commission, one must ask the question: is the current state of the world's economy taking its toll on the health of those in charge of it?
Both of these countries are under enormous pressure right now, and the connection between stress and health is well-known.
Hopefully these are isolated incidents, completely unrelated to work, and they both return to health soon.

After some thought I've decided that you can't include the Lockerbie bomber on your list. The Death Pool is a game of chance and there is zero uncertainty surrounding the Lockerbie bomber's fate.
Really? Because he was supposed to be dead within three months of his release and he's not even in the hospital anymore.
Just sayin'.

clutch call. :pimp:
Japan's culture of quitting, whereby resigning is always the honorable thing to do, looks set to continue as exhausted finance minister Hirohisa Fujii has offered his resignation to Prime Minister Hatoyama.
According to Time Online, Hatoyama has rejected the offer, but at this point the 77-year old, who has been in and out of the hospital since last month, has to be considered a lame duck.
For Japan, the eventual departure of Fujii comes close on the heels of the finance minister, now deceased, who showed up either drunk or on too much medicine at a press conference last year, ultimately forcing his resignation.
It's certainly not the kind of trend you want when the whole world is betting against your debt.

About the Lockerbie bomber thing: I'll let you guys keep him, partly because I should have stated it in the rules, partly because you guys didn't remove him from your lists and partly because I can't be fukd.

Congrats vapid, Chemical Ali was 68 so you receive 32 points.
It took us til July last year to record our first points so it's good to see someone score early.
Two more things:
- A running scoreboard will be kept on the first post in this thread.
- No-one is allowed to edit their posts. It's pretty easy to find out someone who has done so and you will be disqualified.

While we're waiting for more people to die I have a game for all of you. Guess which participant in the Death Pool sent me this message a few hours ago:

The list of possibilities is in the first post of this thread. I think it should be pretty obvious.
(To the person who did send me this: don't ruin the fun. If you do I will keep you in the competition and remind you about it every chance that I can. Keep in mind that I saved your list to my comp so there's no point in deleting your entry)
