this thread will be for new releases that i think people here will dig.

first stop, we go to jay guevara's own detroit and check in with slum village and elzhi.

IMO slum - besides elzhi - are the equivalent of an underground lil wayne. they are all style, flow and presentation. slum has a new album coming out soon, but for the moment they have released an ep to whet our appetite.

money right (produced by madlib) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik5tpIQOAd4)

cloud 9 feat. marsha from floetry (nice r'n'bish cut) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFK6NhRrvIE)

elzhi - IMO the best technical emcee in the game atm besides pharaohe monch - has also released a leftovers album of joints he left off his first album. production from black milk, jake one and moss amongst others.

it can be downloaded from

www.elzhi.com (http://elzhi.com/)

If you mean Im just one of those people that thinks all of hip hop is a bunch of black guys swearing, you're wrong.

Some artists are good, but I dont really know anything about hip hop so Im seriously looking for artists who dont cuss as much and actually have meaningful(somewhat) and good lyrics.

You might like Be, by Common. He actually raps about things and doesn't curse for the hell of it (he barely does at all).

heh, it was mostly a joke. finding good music can be tricky at first, but i find once you get on the right trail, it pretty much snowballs into a whole slew of really good music on top of it. you look for other artists that have contributed to the one you're listening to, affiliate artists, the entire record label, etc. you basically get started with the help of somebody like tetris who really knows his sh*t, and then work your way from there.

^^^ Freddie Gibbs is currently the best rapper alive

I truely believe that...

maybe not really because of his skill, although he has amazing skill, but more for the fact that he is the "REAL DEAL"...

he lives/lived the gangsta ass life that he raps about...and yeah I know other gangsta rappers hustled the streets for real too, but this guy is different, he is is just being real about and doesn't cover himself in diamonds all that BS...

^^^ posted that in another thread recently...

blasian introduced me to him, and alot of his stuff is just great...

infact I think he is the best thing around right now, at least from what I know of, I kinda stopped listening to hip hop years ago, but this guy reminds me of the good old days...

Be was so overhyped IMO. I read plenty of people calling it a classic somehow. I like the Intro, Corner is hot, Testify is pretty good, Chi-City, The Food, and They Say are all good. But then you have tracks like Go! which is Common's version of Kid Cudi's Intergalactic. I wouldn't listen to that unless I got paid.

Maniak you should listen to Lupe Fiasco if you want rap with meaning, nice lyrics and no swearing.

He only has 2 albums so far and both have been called classic by many people, at least, they are both really good.

Food and Liquor is his first, more musical; choruses, beats are more on point. The Cool is darker, themed and more lyrical. Tells a story and has some really powerful songs. Both are great and favourites of mine top to bottom.

it's just the way t3 and baatin use their voices as instruments. they have very distinct cadences, just like weezy does. although lyrically they are completely different from each other, stylistically they are cut from the same cloth IMO. i do prefer listening to slum records any day over wayne though.

@ maniac - seems you looking for that clean and fresh hip hop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iztp036z54) (bdk ftw)

elzhi is a great place to start: if you check his verse in that money right track i posted, he blacks out on the verse. i would also recommend people like pharoahe monch (although simon says is pretty much the opposite of what you're looking for), one be lo and little brother.

also you got the old skool native tongues stuff like a tribe called quest, de la soul, jungle brothers, pete rock and cl smooth and even bran nubian didn't swear too much.

i think that's what i don't like about lupe. he tries to storytell too much. and the stories are all in the same format. psh, i remember when lupe first came out i was all on his bandwagon.. i'm talking back in the days of fahrenheit 1/15. his beat selection is horrible. if he was produced by 9th, madlib, exile, dilla, RJD2, he'd be godly.

I never said it was his best album, or that it wasn't overrated. An album being overrated or not depeds on what you think about it and what others think about it. I only recommended a good album that met the criterion.

this could be my favourite remix of all time along with pete's version of shut em down:

The instamatic focal point bringing damage to your boroughs
Be some brothers from the east with some beats that be thorough
Got the solar gravitation so I'm bound to pull it
I gets down like brothers are found ducking from bullets
Gun control means using both hands in my land
Where it's all about the cautious livin'
Migrating to a higher form of consequence, compliments
Of strugglin', that shouldn't be notable,
Man every word I say should be a hip hop quotable.

Yo, it's about love for cars, love for funds
Loving to love mad sex, loving to love guns
Love for opposite, love for fame and wealth
Love for the fact of no longer loving yourself, kid
We living in them days of the man-made ways
Where every aspect is vivid,
these brothers no longer talk ****
Hey yo, these ****** live it
'Bout to give it to you 24/7 on the microphone
Plug One translating the zone
No offense to a player, but yo, I don't play
And if you take offense, **** it, got to be that way
J.D. Dove, show your love, what you got to say?

I like MF Doom, Madlib, Non Phixion, Looptroop, 'old school' Eminem (The Slim Shady LP, freakin' LOVE that album), J Dilla, Slum Village, Common, Biggie, Blockhead... Stuff like that.

this is a classic posse cut. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxGVdpZnGsI)

diamond d is also a dope producer and his album stunts, blunts and hip hop is nice if you can get past his maladroit rhyming. come to think of it they had some very nice producers with showbiz, buckwild, finesse and diamond.

jake one has been around for a minute and has dropped some nice beats along the way. his album with freeway released this year is very strong and his eponymous debut 'white van music' isn't bad either. he's probably best known for the beat he did for de la, roc cokane flow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61cYyhI3hQQ)

Did anybody listen to Canibus' newest album "Melatonin Magik"? I heard some tracks on youtube and they are decent but I'm not feeling the production, it's too much for me IMO. Maybe it was just the two tracks I heard but if someone can shed some light I'll be greatly delighted

nah i haven't checked out bis. never really thought of him as being that great or impelling despite his obvious technical skill.

been enjoying eric lau's 'kilawatt volume 2' ep atm. nothing groundbreaking, but nice, quality beat and rhymes.

F*ck, I'm late on this one:

pretty incredible lineup, be it Tom Waits and Kool Keith or KRS with Fatlip and Tre (pharcyde), they didn't slouch on talent for a compilation that doesn't quite reach Soundbombing status, but is awfully f*cking good.

Ok, playtetris... I'm going to give you a bit of a challenge.

I pretty much think that all hip hop today is garbage. There are one or two exceptions, but if I'm listening to rap, it is from the early-mid 90s.

You already know that I am a huge Boot Camp Clik guy... Smif-N-Wesson, Buckshot, Black Moon, etc.

I'm also way into Wu and, of course, Nas. I'm really into the minimalist thing and I think the vast majority of hip hop today is way too overproduced with way too much going on in the mixes.

Is there anything new or semi-new (doesn't even have to be new, necessarily) that you think I would like after reviewing this information?

Your work is cut out for you, my friend.

a good place to start is that roc marciano album i posted earlier (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LFR46RUH). very raw, very minimal, very hip hop. totally what you're looking for. great street lyricism too.

u n or u out' also fits (http://rapidshare.com/files/170038216/The_UN_-_UN_Or_U_Out_-_www.champion-sounds.blogspot.com.rar) the description you gave.

It's terrible that you actually think this is good rap just because its alternative to whats out there in the mainstream. These guys suck. They've got the typical nice production that's cited as easy listening that immediately gets the attention of most backpacker fans. Just because the beat is nicely produced, doesn't take away from the fact the guys rapping suck ass at literally every aspect.

i agree re: lewis parker. he has a stilted flow (although that seems to be consistent in the UK scene), but he produces killer beats so i'll forgive him that.

lil sci is actually quite a good rhymer. while his flow is not that in the pocket, he has an amazing ear for beats and is a solid lyricist:

as for my pick as this LP as one of the best of the year? i won't lie, it's mainly for the production, which i think is ultra f*ckin' hot. IMO you don't hear enough of these sorta beats anymore.

I'm just sick of these alternative, less known rappers getting credit with most backpacker fans despite being absolute shit in most cases though backed by nice production. It seems everyone is trying to be the new Binary Star though the fact is those guys had some incredible skills in terms of flow, lyrics and punchlines, which a lot of these come ups don't come close to touching.

yeah, but one be lo is one of the best emcees in the game at the moment. top 5 going around, barring nobody. fact is, the album i posted has some of the best production of the past couple of years, and while not outstanding, the emcees are serviceable.

I actually agree with this.

Even back in the days when I was a hardcore hip head, I never understood why people liked some of the more alternative rappers just because they were different from the mainstream.

I also got tired of underground rappers always telling me how different they are, and how they were 'real hip hop'. I mean..... it's good, we get it but can you make a career or an album that's not solely based on that?

Which is why KRS turned me off as well.

To me... dope is dope, and the true dope artists lie in between underground and mainstream. Most of these underground cats deserve to stay underground because they can't make good music. The mainstream artists at times are even better than their underground counterparts, they just focus their talents on a different direction which diminishes their talents at times, this creates inconsistency and we get to hear the pop stuff more.

I'm going to take some time and give close listens to your recommendations. I'll get back to you with my thoughts. I just listened to 'Raw Deal' by Marciano, though, and I liked what I heard. It sounds exactly like the kind of sound that I am looking for.

also to come out soon, roc marciano's 'marcberg reloaded' which will feature production by just blaze, pete rock, q-tip and the alchemist

One of 2010's most championed underground Hip Hop albums is Roc Marciano's full-length solo debut, Marcberg. Produced and rapped entirely by the former frontman for The U.N. as well as Flipmode Squad affiliate, Marcberg was released this spring on Fat Beats Records.

Via Twitter (@RocMarciano), the emcee announced that he will soon release Marcberg: Reloaded. Per Marc's reports, this remixed version of his debut will feature new mixes courtesy of some of Hip Hop's most respected producers, including Pete Rock, Large Professor, Just Blaze, The Alchemist, Madlib, Q-Tip, Ray West and some new mixes from Roc himself.

HipHopDX will keep you updated.

i like how he starts out slow and falls into it. the album is getting a lot of praise as the best hip hop album of the year, I'm not sure that's the case but it's definitely a good listen, real deal hip hop with some grimey NY beats. Lyrically it's not my favorite, well-worn gangster bravado, not strikingly original but he does have something.

while his topics are not overly unique, his approach to writing definitely is. he, to me, is WAY more evocative and creative that any other gangsta rapper in the game ATM which is why he's an emcee's mc. off the top of my head, i can only think of a couple of hip hop albums that i've enjoyed as much as 'marcberg' this year.

like in this track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqPxMsxoUGE), i can picture the protagonist maturing/progressing and reaching a realisation about his lifestyle as he moves through his verses. to me it's all about realising you're on the wrong track, and that's why it's so full of pathos.

then in this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqMBZUKm3sQ&feature=related) track, his wordplay is CRAZY. i don't hear anybody rhyme the words he does the way he does (totally unique rhyme patterns), especially in a narrative track.

my favourite of the album is this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uVHsPOL8j0) though. insane beat, vicious verses. "we chilling at the crib out in forest hills, whores from brazil trying to steal chlorophyll"

this track is killer too (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxY9eBqmNaw&feature=related); beautiful stripped back beat.

and i haven't even mentioned 'snow' yet, which is perhaps the craziest beat on the album

what else is out playtet?

I checked out that Guilty Simpson on your recommendation, I couldn't find the new one but I found "ode to the ghetto", not as good as I was hoping for after you'd linked me to this track (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEDBFzDnIRM).
Is the "OJ Simpson" (2010) album better?

I got the new Madlib "Medicine Show #7 High Jazz" it's kind of cool, I'd be happier if it were more hip hoppy- but it's cool, somewhere between Herbie Hancock and DJ Shadow.

I got the new Slum Village, they're never going to touch Fantastic Vol 2 but it's good to hear from what's left of them and of course my 32 year old ass loves hearing from Phife and Pos.

I got the new Big Boi, I liked it and I have to say I'm actually surprised despite being a huge outkast fan, I looked at the guest artists and thought it was going to be annoyingly crunk but even the gucci mane track is tolerable.

I got all the black milk I could get my hands on based on your rec (I found "Tronic" and Fat Ray and Black Milk's "Set Up") it's not blowing me away but it's good solid hip hop. Anything else of his/theirs I'm missing out on?

I think it was your rec that led me to One Be Lo's solo stuff, it's not Masters of the Universe but it's been in heavy rotation in my car. mm hm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7kW8hQv-do)

I've been playing Royce Da 5'9's "Street Hop" in my headphones a lot lately, it's really great (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk5X2K6CZNo) and makes me want to give Slaughterhouse another chance (I think Joe Budden just really turned me off when he badmouthed Meth). I f*cking love this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgTZMAHB9XM).

NON HIP HOP- I know, wrong thread, but as long as we're at it- they "just" released a 6 disc Wilson Pickett box set and I got it, f*cking sick. The new Jack Johnson is disappointing, I loved his first two albums but he's just having a few good songs per album lately. He has a live album that I got at the same time that came out in 09 and it's very good. I got the new Arcade Fire too but haven't listened to it yet.

yeah 'ode to the ghetto' is pretty mediocre for the most part. i enjoyed the OJ simpson album sporadically, but it's not up to where i want it to be from those dudes. same with slum village barring the track i sent you. i was also underwhelmed by reflection eternal's album besides 'just begun'.

love that madlib album you mentioned... he's released quite a few of those this year (medicine shows).

big boi/roc marci/damu the fudgemunk's ep with raw poetic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChjwSDclyik)+ instrumental album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8HrH5OWZRs&feature=related) are probably my favourites of the year in terms of hip hop. after them, i go with flying lotus (although he's not hip hop per se, it's an amazing album) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFix7VLor88&feature=related), john robinson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0nU1s3cGQg) and lewis parker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyiKaLrop_M&feature=related) (nothing fancy, but crazy nice production), as well as the rick ross album :oldlol:

i'll add some more when i think of them.

that suite for ma dukes too.

this is probably a little out of left field for most people here, but i also really liked m-phaze's album 'good gracious' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiG5gmj_l3c). gotta rep my local dudes.

another good one i forgot to mention is the EP by eric lau called 'kilawatt volume 2' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol7VK63uG48). nice chilled beats

The mainstream artists at times are even better than their underground counterparts, they just focus their talents on a different direction which diminishes their talents at times, this creates inconsistency and we get to hear the pop stuff more.
that is so true...

I'll be honest, with the exception of Gibbs I have pretty much stopped following rap altogether...but most of the time someone gives a link to a new artist (not in this thread nessessarly but all the rap threads in here) I tend to not like it...it always comes off TOO underground or too "bland"...or too much of the same shit over and over by a guy how is trying to be new...

and alot of times in those threads I never post that opinion because A. I am out of touch with the scene and B. I don't want to look close minded...

I try to give some of these guys a chance, but it is difficult for me...I just have alot of trouble liking it...

and then sometimes I just get the feeling that maybe I am getting old...and hip hop is a young man's game...:(

I hope that isn't true...because my entire generation grew up on rap...but it is hard for me to invision a crowd of 50-60 year olds still listening to the stuff...

unlike rock, maybe rap is something that you grow out of...it doesn't hold the test of time the same way other music does...

I think we'll probably always love hip hop to some extent, I see no reason why I wouldn't love Pharcyde in 20 years. Most of the new shit is for kids so in that sense you're right about it being a young man's game but that's no different than rock. People who grew up on Chuck Berry think Spice Girls/N'Sync/Justin Bieber is total shit, it makes sense that the 30-40 year olds think lil wayne is a joke. Different markets. I think there will always be the stuff that we loved when we were young and some guys who put out new shit that we can get into. I do feel a little detached from it though, I remember in the 90s I'd read liner notes to find out about more people and really take an active interest in the world of hip hop. It was realer and more important to me than it could ever be again. These days I need hip 20 somethings on the internet to tell me what to get and even then a lot of it misses for me.

It is going to be really funny when we're 80 years old and guys like Snoop Dogg are dying of old age and we'll think back to the days of doggystyle and just laugh.

I am not going to post all the tracks on that CD, because I pretty much think with the exceptions of a few they are all great...

I am 100% convinced that had SKNF come out in say 93, Gibbs would be talked about right along with Pac and Biggie...and Nas...maybe the greatest ever...

as most of you know, alot of the appeal I have for him comes from the fact that he is talking about his life in there...he is as real as it comes...

i'll always have a soft spot for hip hop, if not for the music then for what it represents. TBH it opened up a whole new world of music (thanks aladdin) to me: if i like a sample i will do my best to find out what it is, and generally end up bumping the original artist more than the sampler :oldlol:

then there's the lyrics... hip hop at its best is such a lyrical craft. when i hear a verse that i relate to (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4JBC7I3kfQ#t=0m30s) it sticks with me as much as a book or a movie or a tv show that i like, probably even more.

i agree he is really good, that ep has 7 great tracks, the exception being the last. but the reason you like him so much is because his life appeals to you. there are a lot of guys who are "as real as it comes" in what they are saying and are more talented. if you want to get into more hip hop than you have to get over the only liking "gangster rap"
I know...

it is certainly the main issue with me...

I probably look at rap music in a very sckewd f*cked up way...maybe like watching a action movie or something...

and rap without the action to me can be boring...I need someone to get shot damn it...:lol

that is joke, but it do kind of look at rap as "action music" for lack of a better term...and a real story to me is much more interesting than a made up one...

For my part I kind of wish he'd just released this as "Dres of the Black Sheep" because it's just not the same without the Sugar Dick Daddy Mr. Lawnge... but let's be honest, it's wasn't gonna be the same either way.

A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing is one of my all-time favorite hip hop albums, and it's clear that the low lifes of the native tongue family tree, the doo doo eatin, vomit tastin, pee drinkin, jelly donut makin, hoe slappin, kitty cat lickin, cesspool swimming, pre marital sex havin Black Sheep will never be back in prime '91 form but we do have a surprisingly good album here. Lots of interesting guest appearances, an eclectic set of beats, and a pretty sharp Dres. By no means a heavy rotation album for me, but nice to hear from an old friend.

unrelated subnote- Dres always sounded like Smooth B (Nice n Smooth) to me, he sounds a bit like Speech (arrested development) too.

There's actually a pretty good site www.f*cksolar.com (you have to put a U where the * is) that really gets into what a sleezy piece of shit Solaar is. Primo has maintained love and repped Guru throughout so it was no shocker that he did this show. There's a lot of talk to get through, most of which is interesting, but he pulls out some of Guru's best shit. And it's just cool to hear what Primo picks out of his former wingman's catalog. Primo's show is worth the price of admission for xm/sirius by itself.

Gang Starr is probably my favorite hip hop act, but I guess I never really got into the background and details like I do for most of the artists I love. I honestly don't know anything about Solaar, I don't even know who he is.

And I've been entertaining the thought of getting XM for my work truck, Primo having a show is just another notch in the 'closer, but not yet' category.

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna see if I can download it and throw it on my iPod for tomorrow.

feel like people probably think I work for xm/sirius with all the repping them I do but it really has changed my life for the better. I still listen to all my music at home but in the car it's just so f*cking nice to have a variety of shit that isn't just the stuff I always listen to. There's a Primo show, a Pete Rock show, Grand Master Flash's "Block party", a Statik Selektah show, a Tony Touch show, Afrika Bambaata's "Zulu Beats", a DJ Muggs show that are all incredible (the only DJ show that I don't really like is the DJ K-slay show). There's also shows with Monie Love and the G-unit guys that aren't DJ shows but are still interesting. Rude Jude and Lord Sear do a show M-F that is hilarious and plays a good mix of music. It's definitely not all shit you're going to enjoy all day long, I find myself on Backspin (old school) most of the time because Shade45 (eminem's station) and hiphopnation play too much shitty new stuff (Lil Wayne, Young Droozy) during the day but it's the only place (besides here) that I really hear new stuff and those aforementioned DJ shows are worth the price of admission by themselves. The decade channels (5=50's, 6=60's, 7=70's, etc) are also incredible and I spend a lot of time there.

Kind of a throw back boom bap album, good ole New York shit. Rooted in duck down with rawkus flavor. Some french guy named Kyo Itachi produced it, sonically dandy. Reminds me of DJ Honda or the Beat Junkies.

LD - have you listened to Kool Keith's 'more recent' albums, nogatco rd, Project Polaroid or Dr. Dooom 2?

It's his best work since the original Dr. Dooom shit back in '99 - with Project Polaroid the best of the three. Each album is by a different producer.

I'm also curious to know your personal opinion of Watch the Throne?

Great thread! Just post the shit in hip-hop thread, though.

Del's one of my favorites. Kind of a low-fi garagey mixtape but it's Del on Fela, and it's f*cking free.

When I'm in the mood, Del is golden and a delight to the ears. He's what a consider a 'seasonal' taste (a lot like Kool Keith in some ways).
