There have been some good player vs player threads of late to my surprise. I got the idea for this one after reading the who could have been like kobe thread. And the 2 names that pop up to most was Tmac and VC. Cousins. who was the better of the two?

* waits for Sir Charles to come up with +/- stats*

I was doing some thinking just now and to be honest couldnt really decide. Tmac was the closest to reaching his potential but they both didn't. Carter could dunk like a freak monster and could pull up from anywhere.

Thoughts?

I'm going to go with Vince. He had a longer prime and was less injury-prone than McGrady and made a low-budget franchise in the Raptors get to the playoffs and actually semi-complete while changing the face of the franchise while he played there. A career 45% FG%, 38% 3P%, 5.5 RPG, 4.2 APG, 23.4 PPG player.

In the end Vince Carter was more beneficial to the NBA than McGrady ever was.

good basketball genes nonetheless. their mothers should have made atleast 10 more and coupld of owned their own team and won a few championchips, and have a family business going

In terms of offensive efficiency, they were about the same. McGrady got to the foul line a bit more. Vince was a better three point shooter.

Vince had the obvious edge in athleticism.

McGrady was the better and more versatile defender. He could defend positions 1-3 with his length.

McGrady was a bit more consistent.

McGrady was more reliable.

Better player was Tracy McGrady.

Easily Carter. Just because T-Mac had one great season doesn't make him better.

Prime and Career, it goes to Carter. He strung many great seasons together, while T-Mac managed about 2 or 3...

That means exactly nothing to me.

In this decade Kobe's had 2 seasons better, Lebron has had 1 season better, Wade has had 1 season better, Shaq has had 3 seasons better.

So no, its not even in the top 7 this decade.

Prime T-Mac
Career Carter

I'd just differentiate prime and peak...
Peak - McGrady
Prime - Carter
Carrier - Carter

McGrady from 00 to 05 was better than any version of Carter.
But yeah T-Mac had a ridiculously short prime, to think that he peaked at 23 and started to lose his athleticism at 25...

I would look at it this way.

You're a GM who can have either VC or T-Mac for all of the 2000's to date.
Clearly you would take VC, knowing what you know now about T-Mac's injuries and equaly inconsistent (if not more so) effort.

yeah. but to me, a bigger question is what kind of spoiled brat environment were they both raised in, that resulted in 2 of the L's biggest whiners??

Peak TMac was crazy good, Peak Carter was too. Thats way to close for me to decide. I think TMac's Peak lasted longer, but Carter's career has been better.

Tmac is a bad man in 2003. One of the greatest individual seasons in NBA history.

For there careers I'd go with Carter probably. But a peak of 32\6\6 is pretty incredible and is better than anything Carter put up.

WTF are people in this thread are smoking. By what measure has Vince had a better career than T-mac? Neither has won jack, so the only way you can measure them is by accomplishments. And by everything except stupid all-star fan selections, T-mac has out done Vince. Do people realize T-mac has 7 All-NBA selection(4 of the seven were 1st or 2nd team selections btw)? Do people realize thats three times as many +1 as Vince has had? And out of the two times Vince made it, 1 was a 2nd team, the other a 3rd team. And T-mac had 2 scoring titles as well.

No f*ckin brainer T-mac was a much better player than Vince in every facet you want measure them by but athleticism(which was not anywhere near as big a difference as alot of people are trying to make it). T-mac was a better ball-handler, better scorer, better passer, and better rebounder. A early to mid 00's, healthy T-mac was a top 3-5 player in the league(When was the same thing said about Vince outside of Canada?)during that time. No discussion, T-mac was better.

How can anyone who watched them both play argue against that. T-mac was better than any swingman in the League in the early 00's not named Kobe

Surely if McGrady had the health of Carter, I would give it to him easily, but injury and no success in the playoffs makes this Carter in terms of who you'd pick for a franchise. If it were for a season and injury wasn't a factor, I'd take McGrady, just more explosive scorer and versatile.

Both could be on the Kobe/Lebron/Wade level right now, but didn't get there or maintain what they had.

Celts34
12-23-2009, 11:28 PM
+1

Lets see Vince' career almost 19,000pts, 4,000 boards, 3,000 assists,
9 time AS
2 time All NBA(1 2nd team, 1 3rd team)
Gold medal
Rookie of the year

T-mac' career 17,000pts, 5,000 rebounds, 4,000 assists
7 time AS
7 time All-NBA(2 1st team, 3 2nd team, 2 3rd team)
2 time scoring champ
01' MIP award

Only reason this is a debate is that Vince has been a hell of alot more healthy(and thus productive) than T-mac has been over the last 4 1/2 years. Otherwise its a no contest. And the question is who was better? not who had the better career? And T-mac was unquestionably better than Vince.

Their primes were about the same, what's up with this "Carter's prime was better and longer?'

Carter's prime from 99 to 04

Mac from 00 to 05

Both still had good season up until 08 really.

VC has 1 more All-Star appearance (8-7) but Mac blows him out the water with All-NBA teams 7 to 2.

Celts34
12-24-2009, 01:10 AM
NBA teams have nothing to do with it. Mcgrady was the better playoff performer, which was why I thought his prime was better. Carter folded in the playoffs.

NBA teams have everything to do with it. The All-NBA teams name the fifteen best players in the NBA every season. The fact that T-mac has twice as many All-NBA selections than Vince, pretty much unequivocally says who was better. Period.

Better regular season player. Sorry, but I'm a playoffs kind of guy, not a regular season.

I heard that McGrady's 2003 season was better than Kobe ever was or will be how true is that?

This isn't even a question. Maybe you could compare their primes but career wise.. uh Tracy played about 40% of a career.

One aspect that greatly favors McGrady is MVP votes. McGrady finished top five in MVP voting on two occasions and top 10 on four other occasions. Carter on the other hand, never finished better than 10th. Even in 2001, he was only 11th in MVP voting.

All-NBA teams was mentioned earlier and that also favors McGrady. Bottom line is this: If you have a choice between 2000-2003 McGrady or 1999-2001 Carter, it would be wiser to take McGrady for the reasons I mentioned back on page one.
