yea i know its a very broad term. but i'm talking about shawarmas, hummus with tahini, garlic paste, brown rice, kebabs etc. i was introduced to it couple of months ago and i'm literally hooked. i need to have it at least 4-5 times a week now.

I just had home made falafel for dinner today. Delicious. Probably the only vegetarian meal I ever eat. I love just about all the stuff you mentioned in the op, not crazy about hummus though. I couldn't live without shwarmas..

Man, kebabs used to be the cornerstone of my diet during my second year in college. Now I eat them from time to time, but only the mutton kebabs, can't stand the chicken ones. I also love me some good falafel or kofte.

this stuff is delicious. very clean and healthy feeling after you eat. type of food you can drink alcohol after because of how well your body processes these types of foods.

this stuff is great, i used to eat shwarma when i was in london all the time now i moved back and luckily shwarma places have started popping up near my house aswell.
Hummus and kebabs, shish tawook and schwarma i like, but the rest of arabic food I find to be very bland and tasteless, besides the good stuff we know and love it's mostly just rice and lentils without any spices or flavoring, ick.

I had to hand out baklava to a bunch of ungrateful Taliban/al-Qaeda members once when we didn't have to give them anything like that and those ****s still had the gall to throw a temper tantrum about the quality. So even though I used to like it I'll never touch the stuff again due to the negative connotation it holds with me.
assuming you served in the military? you went overseas? are you still in active duty?

taliban turds, to be fair though they probably expected it to be baked with half a kilo of hash in it, i bet that's how they cook it in afghanistan, they put hash in everything in those kind of countries, i have no idea where it all comes from but they have a shit ton of it

its basically meat mince and breadcrumbs on the outside, and lamb on the inside, can either be baked or deepfried, and goes great with tzatsiki, or just some greek yoghurt. or you could always put bbq sauce on it. whatever you feel like really. just not ketchup or mustard.

That entire Persian/Mediterranean region has some great food with distinct flavors that can't really be replaced by other cuisines. London taught me to be a fan and everywhere I went in Turkey I enjoyed the food.

Reading this thread gave me some insane cravings yesterday for more mid east food. I had a Lamajoun with a mutton kebab plate with hummus & tahini, brown rice, garlic paste, falafel and cucumbers. I think my craving is satisfied but I might have some more tonight :oldlol:
Never had it, always scared to try it. One day I will.

lebanese is awesome. ottawa is pretty much the undisputed king of the shwarma up here, although i can't say i've packed away more than a half dozen. but yeah, everything mentioned in this thread is delish. props for the baklava reference marlo. that pastry is to die for.
although going to a legitimate lebanese spot and trying to put away one of their full platters is a task in itself. not only are you generally served a whole wallop of food, but its soooo ridiculously garlic-y and lemon-y that it begins to take its toll before you're even halfway through. although i suppose you would get used to it the more you ate it though.
hummus is incredible btw. goat dip? maybe.
anybody ever try lebanese coffee? the people who live in the house above me have it all the time, and i've joined them on a few occasions, despite their not speaking a lick of english and my only speaking a small lick of french. anyway, ridiculously powerful stuff, but really really tasty. its essentially espresso, but much more potent that what you'll get at your average chain starbucks or second cup.

Sand slips in as easily as it slips out.
Cutting fingernails is requested and encouraged on a regular basis.
Thanks for the hygiene concerns. Good to see you care about others' cleanliness. I'm sure you despise Eminem for "spitting on your onion rings at burger king"
It's usually East Africans and South Asians who skip the utensils. Pakis/Afghanis/Persians/Arabs rip off a piece of bread and use it to scoop up meats/veggies. So, no the main dish would not have sand and camel dung on it.

arabic food is fantastically delicious IME. it has lots of crossover with greek / israeli food, so there's obviously a regional thing going on.
only thing i won't touch is falafal, since it's fried.
cool thing i learned from this thread is that "lamb shawarma" is another word for gyro.

I hate the Lebanese coffee, it is too, what do you say? ehh bitter? It isn't even brewed man. It just mixed on a stove with hot water. MY ex's mother used to drink it.
I like Tabbouleh, baklava, this raw meat they eat and million other thing. Also at the restauratuns when eating meze it is great.
