People of Earth:
In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.
Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.
But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.
Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.
So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.
There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.
Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.
Yours,
Conan

How could Leno live with himself for taking someone else's spot back after he already gave it up just because his crappy show failed (which falls squarely on his shoulders)?

Didn't Leno basically get forced out of the spot due to NBC not wanting Conan to go elsewhere? I think this is more about NBC panicking and not thinking long term than Leno or Conan. They should have been willing to let Leno go elsewhere and tried to be patient with Conan once this decision was made rather than giving Leno a show in an obvious bad slot and handcuffing Conan. I hope Leno continues to rag them in his old slot and I hope where ever Conan goes he rags NBC as well without mercy.

From 2004...
"In 2009, I'll be 59 years old and will have had this dream job for 17 years," Leno said in NBC's written statement. "I felt that the timing was right to plan for my successor and there is no one more qualified than Conan."

I think it was more about them pressuring him to make way than anything. It was pretty obvious by him wanting to still have a show that he wasn't ready to hang it up. It was done to keep Conan. Can you imagine Carson (not Daly either) walking away and being given another show? NBC messed it up by not telling Leno no to another show and not letting him walk while giving Conan the time needed to grow his show and audience.

Yes, NBA forced Leno out against his wishes. Then panicked when he said he'd go somewhere else.
As for Leno's new show being 'bad'... There's a reason late night shows start at 11:30!

i don't really care, because apart from the daily show and the colbert report, late night shows are sorta lame. but if we did have to rank them, booze has it right; conan and furg are at the top of the ladder. leno is a hack, and letterman is just sort of there. does kimmel count? he's okay but not really anything special.

Oh, but he wasn't done yet. O'Brien went on to detail 11 things he could do in the wake of NBC's decision to move him out of the 11:35 p.m. slot to 12:05. Among them:
-- Star in a Lifetime original movie about a woman trapped in an abusive relationship with her network.
-- Go to ABC and star in a male redhead version of "Cougartown" called "Redwolf Village."
-- Host a show on B.E.T. called, "White All Night."

Fallon is awkward as hell but his show still gets points because it's not a carbon copy of the others. He seems to actually enjoy his job and isn't just going through the motions night by night like Leno/Letterman/Conan.

some funny parts in here
Jay Leno's Future: Four Options For His Next Step
David Letterman's getting gleefully nasty about his longtime foe Jay Leno. Jimmy Kimmel pasted on a fake chin and lambasted Leno for his willingness to destroy "The Tonight Show." Conan popped off a press release so amazing it should be encased in glass at studied at graduate programs, then followed it up with a scathing bit in which he compared his competitor to an elderly ho.
Yup, things are not going well for Jay at the moment. No surprise, then, that folks in his camp are beginning to hint that their guy might walk away from NBC as well.
"They have put Jay in a terrible position," an anonymous insider told PopEater.com. "It looks like he is the reason that Conan is now without a job. Jay is a great guy and it's not fair that due to NBC's stupidity he looks like the bad guy."
So what's Leno's next move? Does he stay put, hop to another network or ditch the public airwaves entirely? Let's take a look.
Return to "The Tonight Show"
Pros: Everyone knows Leno never wanted to ditch "The Tonight Show" and, according to the geniuses at NBC, only Jaw Jaw Binks can helm the 11:35 slot. Leno can plop back into the chair Conan has kept warm for him these past seven months, start body slamming Letterman in the ratings again and pretend that whole "Jay Leno Show" nightmare never happened.
Cons: Kick Conan out? Is Leno crazy? Who besides my grandpa is on his side at this point? Forget about the fact that Conan's talent agency handles half of Hollywood. The other half would avoid Leno like the plague for his act of sabotage. "Tonight" would become a toxic venue.
Do "The Jay Leno Show" at 11:35
Pros: Jay would free himself from NBC's primetime wasteland and settle back in at the true soft spot of the late-night schedule. He'll also win at least some plaudits for not commandeering "Tonight." With dramas back on the NBC schedule at 10 p.m., Leno's show will receive the ratings bump Conan's never did. Ratings and time slot win!
Cons: Does Leno have no respect whatsoever for the most enduring franchise in the history of late-night TV? Is he willing to transform "Tonight" into "Tomorrow" when it airs at 12:05 a.m.? You hear that sound? It's Jack Paar and Johnny Carson rising from the dead to gnaw on Leno's me-me-me-wired brain tissue.
Head to Vegas
Pros: Leno had a historic run at the helm of "Tonight." He might not be at his high point right now, but if he sticks around at NBC, his reputation stands to suffer greatly. Leno has famously continued to perform his stand-up and could settle in with a permanent show in Las Vegas (with a record-setting, bajillion-dollar contract, of course) and let the crowds come to him.
Cons: Could Leno tuck his chin between his legs and scamper off to a glorified night club and let NBC win? He doesn't want to be known as the guy that was not only driven out of primtime but out of Hollywood entirely.
Launch an ABC or Fox Show
Pros: Leno said it himself when this scandal first broke last week: "Fox is beautiful this time of year." And ABC was rumored to be wooing the 59-year-old before NBC locked him into the 10 p.m. slot. Leno could flee the sinking ship that is NBC and launch a new voyage on a rival network. If both he and Conan left, how screwed would NBC be? What self-respecting comedian would take over "Tonight"?
Cons: As we made clear earlier in the week, Fox is one step up from your parents' basement on the late-night show scale of success and exposure. And do you thinking displacing Kimmel instead of Conan will do anything for Leno's public image? If anything, screwing not one but two youth-minded late-night hosts might doom Leno to a place in America's heart alongside Balloon Boy's dad.

It's just pathetic how Jay Leno tries to hold on. Conan was always funnier and probably brought Leno ratings as people waited for Late night to get on.

NBA would be very dumb to let Conan go.

You're an idiot Conan fanboy. Conan hasn't been funny in years, same redundant, recycled crap. I hated his new set too, but that's not a point. Jimmy Fallon is a breath of fresh air, if you watched him you would know this. Unless you're a moron.

What Leno and NBC have done to him is such a sh*tty move. I think Conan would be better off going to ABC where a Conan/Kimmel lineup would be the greatest.
Either that or I was thinking why hasn't Comedy Central been discussed? It's not like Comedy Central would be beneath NBC. They've got The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. How about a prime time show on Comedy Central for Conan? Imagine how much more edgy he'd be able to be. It would be hilarious.

The *********ing Bear is dead.
As a deal nears for Conan O'Brien's exit from NBC, one thing is certain: the characters and recurring comedy bits O'Brien originated during his 16-plus years on "Late Night" and "The Tonight Show" will not follow the host when he leaves NBC.

So not only does Jay Leno and NBC take Conans show away, but they rape him of his characters.
Oh, what the hell? That's horrible. Does NBC realize just how awful they're coming off looking in all of this?

NBC to keep Coco's *********ing bear
By Matthew Belloni and Nellie Andreeva
The *********ing Bear is dead.
As a deal nears for Conan O'Brien's exit from NBC, one thing is certain: the characters and recurring comedy bits O'Brien originated during his 16-plus years on "Late Night" and "The Tonight Show" will not follow the host when he leaves NBC.
The Peacock owns the intellectual property behind such popular O'Brien characters as Pimpbot 5000 and Conando, as well as recurring segments such as In the Year 3000 and Desk Driving. Sources involved in the settlement negotiations say NBC is keeping the copyrighted and trademarked elements of O'Brien's shows as part of the deal. That means the bits and characters will likely never be seen after O'Brien's "Tonight" ends its run Jan 22.
While the vast majority of the characters O'Brien introduced are said to owned by NBC, it's unclear who controls Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the crass canine puppet that is perhaps O'Brien's most popular recurring bit. Triumph was originated by writer and longtime O'Brien pal Robert Smigel, whose reps declined to comment on whether Smigel or NBC owned rights to the character.
In 1993, David Letterman got into a dustup with NBC when he departed "Late Night" for CBS's "Late Show." NBC attorneys attempted to prevent Letterman from taking intellectual property originated on "Late Night" to the comic's new home. Letterman responded by dropping certain bits and renaming other recurring segments--"Viewer Mail" became "CBS Mailbag" and frequent guest Larry "Bud" Melman began referring to himself by his real name, Calvert DeForest. Letterman mocked the dispute on his first "Late Show" when NBC anchor Tom Brokaw interrupted the monologue and stole cue cards in the name of securing NBC's intellectual property.
O'Brien, if he lands at another late-night show, might be in a tougher spot. Unlike comic personalities Letterman and Jay Leno, O'Brien began his career as a writer on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons," and his shows relied more heavily on the cleverly scripted bits and outrageous characters.
Losing those assets could hurt O'Brien as he looks for another home, although his "Tonight" had featured fewer of the characters than "Late Night" and the host--who is considered one of the top comedy writers in the business--may be looking for a fresh start. Sources close to him said he was not interested in taking his NBC characters with him.

Jay Leno is not stealing the show. For the millionth time, it's all NBC.
And you're surprised that they're taking his characters? It's their property, they paid for it, they aired it, they can rerun it...
True but Jay's going to have to bear the brunt of it when he takes over Conan's spot as he is the public face of NBC in this matter. I keep hoping Leno just turns them down and walks because he's coming across as the bad guy here.

You don't think Leno deserves a little bit of the blame? His 10 o'clock show failed miserably. Just because NBC is willing to boot Conan for him doesn't mean that he should go for it. What happened to his stance from 2004?

yea id like to see some of the other sport guys head out there and play 10 games in a row without an off day for 3 hours a day. 154 games a year not including spring training or the playoffs. you're a ****ing moron if you are trying to degrade baseball players as not being athletes. Are there some out of shape DHs or pitchers? Sure, however that is the minority.

Yeah, I kind of assumed Jay Leno was retiring once he left the Tonight Show to be honest. Who knew he planned to do a primetime variety/talk show that would completely **** up the Tonight Show's ****? What a hilarious misunderstanding!
Here's hoping Conan is back on the air soon. I personally liked Jay, but his time has past, Conan is (or was?) the future.

Athletes don't have creative rights etc. Kobe did not create the Lakers franchise. Simon created Idol. If Kobe "created" the Lakers it would be a different story. Athletes who who do not live up to their potential are "overpaid". Simon Cowell is more than a one trick pony.

I can attest to the fact that playing even 50 games in two months in college took a serious toll, especially when those are all doubleheaders, when you practice every day you aren't playing, and when you have to worry about school to top it off. I remember one particularly ugly road trip my sophomore year where we played 12 games in 7 days - all on the road. I caught every one of them and was f*cking bagged by the time that was done.
Now, multiple that by 3+ to see what MLB players go through.
(Of course, they don't ride buses and stay in cheap hotels or play doubleheaders, but still).
BTW, try closer to 28-29 games in a row w/o an off day, and that includes flights etc. Most teams in the Show only have 1-2 off days/month.

I really, really hope Stern shows up on Conan this week.
http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/01/19/howard-stern-says-no-to-coco/
Conan's staff asked Howard Stern to come on The Tonight Show later this week (for what will probably be Conan's last week), but Stern has said no. He says that if the show was in New York he'd do it, but he doesn't want to fly out to Los Angeles (I guess doing it via satellite would be kinda lame too). Rosie O'Donnell wanted to do the show too and even offered Stern a private jet for both of them to fly out to do the show, but Stern still said no.

I dunno. Conan's demographic are young people... and most young people get their entertainment from many places, not just from TV. You'll go online and find clips and the like.. you know you don't have to tune in at 11:35 to hear how funny he is, because you can always find it online the next day. Letterman and Leno have an older audience, that's more than likely less tech-saavy and will tune in, because that's what they're accustomed to doing. I don't know how moving networks could change something like that.

nah he was talking about licensing master. in order to play music on tv/film etc you have to license the song. they licenses the actual track, which costs more than if they just licensed the sync and had the band cover it. the stones are notorious for not licensing their songs hence why you never hear them on tv and movies, and if you do, then you can be assured they payed a big price for the rights. . given what it was used for maybe they did get a discount from whoever controls their publishing, but it was still probably at least 100k for the sync rights and 100k for the master rights.
the car had to have been loaned or something.

after watching the last few shows on NBC rewind, i think the format is dead.
conan is still talented, but there's very little cutting-edge humor or things of interest going on. for a guy as talented as him, that should be discouraging. i mean, jon stewart is someone of similar talent, but his show winds up being far more interesting, probably because of how much he ties it to current events. also, stewart and bill maher bring in guests that actually matter to the welfare of the world. hosts like conan, leno and letterman bring in guests who are typically hawking their latest hollywood or show business book deals. at a certain point, who really gives a crap what some entertainer trying to be hip and funny has to say about the world?
by contrast, david letterman really is funnier and more interesting, but that's not saying too much. as good as he is, it's still just mostly schtick, and having to watch him night after night would be painful. leno is even worse, but at least he satisfies a couple demographics that are best not mentioned in polite company.
best thing that conan does is offering a venue for the wickedly-funny "triumph", as well as having a sidekick who actually talks back and isn't a fawning yes-man. that's it, though.
in conclusion, conan is probably better off after all this. his show wasn't working, and this is an opportunity to reformulate it.

Lol, mirror? Yes, we're all to blame for not supporting Conan. GTFO here kid! He just received a 45 mil check. He's laughing all the way to the bank. Having 4 talk shows in a row is what did him in. That and he started to suck. This did nothing but blow up his spotlight. I used to be a huge Conan fan but he lost his edge so I started watching Ferguson. Conan watered his act down even more when he was host of the Tonight Show. He tried to morph into a Conan/Leno which absolutely didn't work for him. Conan is at his best when he's acting a fool. Even with the gloves off and nothing to lose in the last week I found him just OK at best.
Pay attention. With so many people upset and his ratings up the question to ask is why weren't a vast number of these people watching his show when he needed them to be watching? Only when the writing was on the wall did people start tuning in and voicing their displeasure. If he had this amount of support through the 7 months of viewership do you honestly think he'd be being bought out? Getting such a huge check certainly takes the sting out and he'll get a big contract with another network, but it doesn't change that reality.

There's more to ratings than fans of the show. Time demographics, lead-ins, etc all play a part in the 'casual' viewer, who makes up way more of the audience than the hardcore fans. For example, before Leno left the Tonight Show, I believe he had the #1 spot for that time slot. Once he moved, guess what? Ratings dropped. Does that mean he lost fans, or that the other factors played a role in the audience draw? Obviously, switching a time slot doesn't mean he loses hardcore fans, just like with Conan. You can't sit here and berate viewers and say "why weren't you watching" when the reality is that the NBC's cluster**** schedule resulted in the loss of casual viewers (which makes up far more of the audience), not the loss of hardcore fans.

you are a f*cking moron. Conan wrote prime Simpsons and prime SNL back in the day and some of his early show sh*t like Triumph The Insult Dog are some of the best skits ever done on latenight.
He is popular with people who like humor, not slapsticky BS, or simple nonsense that plays to the mindless.
And no one is 'making Leno out to be the bad guy' Leno is the bad guy, it is a pretty classless move taking this slot back after he vacated it and failed miserably in his effort to do something different. His 'badguyness' is well documented by many insiders with respect to this situation.

it is Leno's fault cuz Leno could have been like Conan and said no to the new time slot. This way NBC would have had to buy out leno and stick with conan at late night. Instead it was Conan who had to show class and say he wont do this new timeslot.
Also, when NBC fired leno from the tonight show, Leno could have just left and gone to a new network and done something else. instead of just sitting around and blaming Conan's agents and managemtn for the fiasco.

Conan's writing on the Simpsons is overrated. He was more of a staff writer, throwing out ideas with all of them rather than writing full episodes. He technically only wrote 3 1/3 episodes.
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog was all Robert Smigel, just on Conan's show.
iam a huge conan fan and even bigger fan of the simpsons

Okay, now here are current late night talk shows on US TV.
- Tonight Show with Jay Leno
- Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
- The Late Show with David Letterman
- The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
- Jimmy Kimmel Live
- Chelsea Lately (Chelsea Handler)
- The Wanda Sykes Show
- Lopez Tonight (George Lopez)
IMO, the best one from this current group is Craig Ferguson's. Fallon's and Lopez' shows are pretty underrated. And Wanda Sykes' one sucks badly.
I've never watched Craig Ferguson's show, Lopez tonight, never heard of Wanda Sykes and Chelsea Handler...
I just found out about this proxy server thing, so it blocks your ip address and you can get through and watch US shows on their website..

You can catch every single recent episode of Craig Ferguson's show on YouTube. CBS just let them stay around there unlike other shows from other networks that usually are taken down almost immediately.
You should have heard Wanda Sykes since she had a pretty good run as a comedy movie actress.
Oh, and this should help a bit......

Late night comedy needs to die. 30 years ago it might have been cutting edge, and a good forum to hear comedians you would never have a chance to hear in normal circumstances and to see actors/musicians/athletes that you normally would never get the chance to see outside of a professional environment, but now it's useless.
I can see a multitude of different comedians on Comedy Central, see athletes on ESPN and see Musicians and actors on every other channel so it's lost some of what made it relevant.
Also late night talk-shows used to be used to showcase edgy comedy that you couldn't see anywhere else (on tv at least), now the late night talk show circuit has the most bland and generic shit on it.

Lol, I was there in the audience. It was a pretty amazing show, even though some of Conan's singing wasn't that funny. But the Jim Carrey bit was hilarious. Triumph had a video bit that was pretty funny too. I'm pretty sure they intended for people to record it to get around his prohibition from performing on tv and the internet, because they didn't check anyone for cameras.
