Two questions...

1) Which actor is more versatile?
2) Which is a better actor overall?

I have a feeling most will say Depp because of his popularity, but I'm going with Oldman. I remember watching "True Romance" and I had no idea Gary Oldman played the pimp in that movie until a few years later, that's how versatile he is.

Both are great but Oldman has more range and is more believable in his roles. He "becomes" his characters more convincingly.

Yup, DDL is the current greatest...

I've gotta go with Oldman too. Sam Rockwell reminds me a lot of a young Gary Oldman, and not just because they look sort of similar. He's got a lot of that same edge to a lot of his characters.

Just to play Devil's Advocate though, I'm not sure Depp shouldn't be considered more versatile because he's far more suited to play a romantic lead, like say in Chocolat, that I'm not sure Oldman can do. I don't remember him doing it even when he was younger, but I could be forgetting.

The gay pirate Depp played was a rip off from the pimp. Same mannerisms.

Gary Oldman is more versatile-the charismatic Dracula, the every man Commissioner Gordan, the nihilistic Sid, Oldman has shown more versatility.

Johnny Depp mainly plays sleezeball gangsters like once upon a time in mexico and blow, or wierdos like edward scissorhands or willie wonka or jack sparrow or the dude in finding neverland.

In terms of looks, Oldman can disappear into a role better like you said about Oldman in True Romance for example, Depp, you always know it's johnny depp but i had no idea Gordan was gary oldman until I saw the credits of batman begins, Depp you always know it's him.

Not that it's a bad thing though. Depp is more of a star, Oldman seems more of a character actor who likes being on the sidelines

immortal beloved, Oldman playing Beethoven

again i had no idea it was him

and if anyone's seen Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead you'd see oldman's awesome comedic timing and chops. Depp is also a great physical comedian with good timing too though

No, because I thought the prior Depp photo was also DDL in Gangs of New York. Didn't take a close look; they look similar.

I get a lot of flack for this, but is Depp really that good of an actor? Can someone explain to me what makes him so good? I've never really seen it. I feel like he plays the same guy in every role. He always does the same facial mannerisms like do things with his mouth and his eyes get big when he's saying something important.

And to be honest, I don't watch a lot of his movies. I don't like him.

Have you seen Blow or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? The style you are talking about are what he does in the Pirates movies and Charlie and the chocolate factory.

Also he is great in the Libertine. Depp is a really good actor because his screen presence and his creative interpretation of roles.

And Chocolat.

His role in Chocolat is overrated. The main actor was Juliette Binoche, not Johnny Depp. How many scenes did Depp have in that movie, 4? 5?

Hannibal was in for a total of 15 minutes of silence of the lambs and won an oscar, in doesn't matter how short you are in a movie for if you do a good job.

See for example Jack Nicholson in a few good men, he was in that film for like 5 minutes and he is the only thing people remember about that movie

Are you seriously comparing Depp's effect on Chocolat with that of Anthony Hopkins on Silence of the Lambs? Johnny Depp was a supporting actor in Chocolat, while Hopkin's Hannibal was what Silence of the Lambs was all about.

Yes, and apparently you haven't. I can think of three separate scenes in which Jack was on screen for at least 5 minutes.

You'd think with someone who has an IQ of 160+ they'd be able to back up the simplest statement with facts, but instead, we have an idiot like Sergio who freely makes things up on the spot. Did you think you were the only one who saw these movies? Who in their right mind does something like that? I'd be embarrassed if someone called me out like this.

You say you're an intelligent guy, but you post like a f*cking idiot.
